I demand a 13/14" rMB, and not a MacBook Pro without function keys, because I love the comfortable slanted form factor. All they need to do is take the current MacBook Pro w/ fn keys and slant it, keep the same ports, same processor, keep the same butterfly mechanism, trackpad size. Maybe throw in an OLED Display.

You just posted a slanted MacBook Pro. Never gonna happen.

Imagine how much battery life the 12" would have if it wasn't wedge shaped.[/QUOTE

If they make a larger variant, and stay with core m processors, battery life would parallel the Air and maybe even more than that. Honestly 12 hours is a must.

As for the wedge shape...well it is the most comfortable form factor. So I would retain that, however increase surface area by introducing larger screen. Next year should be the year in which the MacBook dethrones the Air.

wait for it to get usb gen 2 or full thunderbolt 3 support

He'll have to wait until 2018 to get that on the MacBook, Kaby lake doesn't support either natively.

The 100-series chipsets should still be more than adequate for most people, but they’re missing things like 10Gbps USB 3.1 gen 2, to say nothing of Thunderbolt. On the plus side, the lack of huge changes means that Kaby Lake chips can easily be dropped into existing Skylake designs, something that will help PC makers get Kaby Lake systems on the shelves in a hurry.

Sooooo....

Just grab this gen? Or wait for gen 3 in (I'm assuming) the spring..

See my post above, it doesn't look like there will be much change between the current model and the one coming out in the Spring, so if need it get it when you can find it on sale (Black Friday is coming up). If you want to wait, the 2018 model should be a big upgrade and the one to get if you can wait that long. Not only will it support thunderbolt 3, but also ddr4 ram.

I can't wait for 2018

Well, I really need a new notebook.

I truly hope for a 14"+ MacBook since I can't reason paying as much as a 15" MacBook Pro costs. Still, I want to stay with macOS which excludes all other notebooks.

I will wait for the next generation MacBook and wish my dream come true. For now, my 7 year old MacBook Pro has to endure (or, I have to endure :D).

The next generation rMB is going to be very underwhelming by the looks of it. The CPU charts comparing the Skylake to Kaby Lake of the m5/i5 chip shows only a small gain in single core results and no change in multicore (Geekbench) and the GPU (HD615 vs HD515) seems to be very similar too. There will be a large difference if you encode/watch 4K video due to the 10-bit HEVC support and 4K output will be better duw to HDMI 2.0/HDCP2.2 support.
All this leads me to believe the 3rd generation will simply see a Kaby Lake CPU dropped in and a price cut. If you're not fussed by the video dec

The SSD on the new 13" MBP seems to be setting some impressive read / write scores from the various tests seen. What is the likelihood of this improved SSD being incorporated in the 3rd generation rMB?

Almost none. rMB board is almost as small as that SSD

I disagree. Same flash storage chips, different controller. Apple is making its own storage controller chip according to iFixit teardown. I believe Apple will leverage this technology in all its lineup.

Storage is a key performance bottleneck and that is one of the reasons Apple went all in on TB3/USBC (external expansion at PCIE speeds)

I love the macbook design. So much that I think it's better than new MBP design...
Because of that, I'll ask you for your opinion: do you think we'll see the 3rd gen macbook having a touch bar with touch id, kaby lake or cannonlake processors, facetime HD camera, improved ssd, improved ram speed? They are the characteristics of new MBP that I would really miss usin a macbook. So that is my hope!

I think if that was possible Apple would have just announced a new Macbook with Escape Edition specs :)

2nd gen butterfly, faster SSD and whatever mobile CPU Intel has rocking right now is my guess.

3rd Gen will likely update the keyboard, CPU/GPU (to Kaby Lake) and perhaps the screen quality and SSD speed. TouchID or the Touchbar would need an internal redesign to fit in the ARM chip that controls them - expect to see that when the rMB is redesigned. This will probably be in 2018 with Cannon Lake.

+1
What he said

PS the SSD will increase speed and Kaby Lake will improve battery life, so a major update without changing its design

I meant that Jet black would be so impractical on a MacBook because of all the smudging and scratching. The matte black seems more suitable, and nicer in my opinion.

Yeah matte black would be incredible. just bought a rose gold because I am confident enough to be a dude that rocks that but matte black would have been a no brainer.

I'd totally buy the rose gold MB – I found some very tempting prices – but I don't want that keyboard. I'll give it a try when the "second generation" keyboard from new MBPs migrates over. Although then I won't find good prices for a few months...

And if you decide to wait for those few months, it might be time for a Pro refresh... and the Apple cycle and dilemma shall continue ... :p
