Airtags will be telegraphing to would-be thieves that you have an Apple device. Sure, go ahead and put an Apple target on your most valuable possessions.

You don't need to live your life in fear of thieves, especially given that you can hide these in the base of a bag or just not visit one of the few countries there thieves are prevalent.

Why not place the airtag inside the luggage so it won’t get removed my someone easily.

Will the low power signal from the Airbag penetrate the bag itself? Maybe that will severely limit the range and usability.

As long as the master phone is connected to its airtag no problem. If the master phone is off or too far away and other phones see it and detect movement using their gps they may get notifications. I can see this coming into play on an aircraft.

This author of this article doesn’t seem to understand how Ultra Wideband works. It’s between iPhone and AirTag and has nothing to do with the country you’re in. It will even work on the Moon, as the system only uses cellular data to relay location over public networks, not between your tags and your own phone.

I think it would help confirm for me it was my specific tag... although I guess there are other ways to identify them in the app now. 🤷‍♂️
yea, that's what i was going to suggest — just have it beep. but we'll see if engravings will show up in the app. knowing apple — they just might :)

How about if you packed a phone in the bag with the AirTag. Then there would be at least one other iPhone in the area. I don't know how all of this phone-stuff works. :) I'd go to Kyrgyzstan anyway. Cool country. Different scenery at every turn.
that's a great idea, but if you pack a phone — why not just find it? ;)

More importantly, if I only travel with one bag and the other three big suitcases are at home will the home AirTags start beeping until I am back home?
i am having this thought as well, based on the reviews and interviews if the airtags was away from the owner for a long period of time (not explicitly stated the period) it will alarm, when someone move the item or just based on time...

so my keys with airtags left in the office intentionally because i need to buy lunch in a walking distance shop, will it alarm?

Yeah, I really would like to know why it's not available in exactly these countries. Does anyone know the answer?
Because the spectrum in question is not licensed in these countries. I guess Apple disables ultra wideband in those countries on your phone to not be in violation of local laws.

Airways are regulated by governments, you cannot sell consumer products emitting at just whatever frequency, it has to be explicitly allowed by law.

No, the alarm will only sound if A) you manually trigger it in the Find My app or B) if it does not detect your phone nearby within 3 days.

I really don't think these things are meant to be used on checked luggage, aka anything that is purposely out of your possession for any given time.

A travel backpack or briefcase/satchel...sure. They remain in your possession unless you make a huge mistake, in which case the attached AirTag might come in handy.

But these things are not for "tracking" things that go outside of your possession.

You'd be wrong. UWB requires regulatory approval for the use of the radio spectrum. If you use an iPhone in certain countries where it isn't approved, it will automatically be turned off. Also see:

True, that is what you or I would do but look at the Mac Rumors photo. You know some idiot will do just that.

“What to Know if You Plan to Travel Abroad With AirTags”

I’d be happy to travel abroad with or without AirTags, but something tells me the eligibility of some features is currently the least of my concerns right now in terms of travel feasibility...

Nope. Not automatic. From Apple: “When use of Ultra Wideband is prohibited in your region, such as while traveling in aircraft, Ultra Wideband can be turned off by turning on airplane mode.”
