Am I the only one who hasn't lost anything in over 30 years?
Maybe you don't fly regularly. I'm welcoming this greatly to be able to finally help the airline to find my "lost" luggage when it happens. It's not only about what you do - but what others do with your possessions. That's where I see the biggest benefit.

That - and attaching Airtags to all of my wifes belongings like wallet, keys, Airpod case etc. Finally I won't have to chase down her stuff when she's late, again. :)

AirTags and other trackers signal everyone "There's something valuable in here!" And they don't have to be seen. Their signal can still be sensed even packed away. Great way for a thief to identify items and people to target.

Nope. Not automatic. From Apple: “When use of Ultra Wideband is prohibited in your region, such as while traveling in aircraft, Ultra Wideband can be turned off by turning on airplane mode.”
For countries that prohibit UW putting you phone in Airplane mode isn't the solution as you won't be able to use your phone.

Edit: Here is the solution to turn it off. Do these countries really check this on your phone to make sure you have it disabled?

I'm curious if it could work when it is inside my aluminum rimowa suitcase. Or the signal is just not powerful enough to pass through the material. Anyone ideas?

Yep, a $30 Airtag in a $450 Hermes luggage tag. :p

AFAIK the UWB signal is only turned on via BLE once the owner of the tag starts searching for it nearby with an iPhone. Similarly, only the owner can make it play a sound. So a thief would have a hard time picking out the item with the tag on a luggage carousel or similar.

More importantly, if I only travel with one bag and the other three big suitcases are at home will the home AirTags start beeping until I am back home?
Haha, probably. But you can disable that feature before leaving

How would that work though? Does the airtag know which country it’s in?
A priori it does not, but the phone does. And UWB might only be switched on in an AirTag after it has made contact via Bluetooth with a phone and the phone has told the AirTag that it is ok to switch it on.

Not unless those three suitcases are moved by somebody. Beeping requires three days of separation followed by movement.

I don’t see they can differentiate between someone that steals your bag with AirTag in it from someone that had an AirTag unknowingly placed in his or her bag. The anti-stalking features are nice, but wouldn’t that render anti-theft useless?
