I've noticed around the programming scene, people are little less worried, particularly with notebooks. In fact, it's almost like a badge of honor for your machine to have battle scars :D

To quote Gilfoyle and Dinesh ...

"A banged up 15-inch MacBook Pro with ****** stickers on it?"

"Everyone here has a beat up 15-inch MacBook Pro ..."

Yeah, among my peer group, partners, employees, etc., over decades, I can count the number of catastrophic Apple laptop failures due to physical abuse, on one hand, and for those few times, a case would've made exactly zero difference.
I put a dent in the edge of a MBP the first week, before I got a case on it. That bugged me for 2 years until I upgraded it. 😬

Any idea what material the hinge is on the MacBook airs and pros?

I do feel like the body is pretty tough. Not sure about actual floor/ground drops, but I think it can hold up well against accidental bumps and bangs into things like doors, tables, etc

2 years?? Damned wealthy Delta pilots! I'm still rocking my 2015 MBP. :p :p
There was a time when I could buy a $2000 MBP computer and sell it two years later for $1000 towards my next computer. I thought that was a pretty good deal. I’d also buy an extended AppleCare warranty so I could sell it with the warranty still intact which was a significant selling point.

If it makes you feel better, I kept my last MBP for 5 years, and currently am using a 2016 MBP, will keep it until it breaks. :)

I'm the one who gently sits mine down. The only incident I ever had with mishandling an MBP was my 2017 non TB I accidentally dropped it and while there no damage to the display the bottom part of the bezel behind the hinge had a tiny little crack.

A friend of mine destroyed his 15 inch MacBook Pro Display because he had keys on the keyboard and closed the lid on the keys and the entire display was shot.

As with all my av gear, I treat my laptop with care. I'm not spending over £2k on something and throwing it around. When travelling it goes in a soft sleeve to avoid scratches from other items in my bag. Never tried opening it from the sides, it opens easily enough with one hand from the front.

The first thing I buy for my Air (had about 4 of them) is a case, and it is replaced if it cracks or breaks, which they eventually do. Except for the slight sheen that is produced after months of a hand resting on either side of the Tpad, they look as new. When I sell one, it gets the original box back, the paper screen cover and the clear plastic bag. Once, I sold one to a teacher, who then called to ask if I had sent her the new one by mistake.

And, if you are a windows user who wonders if the Air finally has a touch monitor, be advised that anyone who lays a fingerprint on my screen will withdraw broken fingers. (Applies to my iMac, also)

Alas, when it comes to cars and man-caves, I am a clutterbug.

I baby my Macs. I don’t put stickers or cases on them. I do however get a nice sleeve to put them in before putting them in a dedicated slot in my backpack. My Macs usually get used 3 years before I sell back to Apple and upgrade.

My first Mac - base 2015 MBA was used three years. Sold it for half what I paid for it. Second Mac - mid line 2017 MBP sold for less than half what I paid. Now I have a top of the line 2020 MBP that I plan on keeping for 5 years or more.

I use Mac because I like the hardware and software aspect. While my iPhone and IPad have a case - my MBP does not. It gets used a lot with an external monitor and eGPU. I use my iPad with a pencil for college and in public note taking usually.

Do I dare ask about the last part? lol

I treat it like a good pen (Cross, rOtring). I use it, take care of it, but I don’t treat it like it’s made of spun glass.
It gets tossed in a backpak.
It may get stacked on stuff or under stuff on my desk.
It gets put into a drawer with other stuff at times.
I don’t beat on it.
I don’t toss it around.
I don’t use it as a dorr stop or a wedge.

Everyday use but not abuse.

On the whole, I take care of my late 2013 13" MBP, but don't baby it. It goes everywhere with me, and to every job I go on. Couldn't stand the cover I bought for it. Use a Targus slip case inside of my computer case to store it when I'm on the road. Can't afford another Mac.

A couple of tiny marks on the top cover near the edge, don't know how they got there. I put two stickers on the back cover, but they don't hide anything.

Now my iPhone, on the other hand, is in a UAG Pathfinder case. The most protection I could find for the least bulkiness. PNO.

Are you the kind of owner who GENTLY sets it down on the table so you don’t hurt it’s feelings and it lives in a protective case it’s whole life, gently babying it...or, are you the type that opens the screen lid from the sides, no protective case and put it in your back back, using it without much care to do what you need?
It doesn't get babied and not in a case or screen protector but it isn't just tossed around too hard.

It is covered in vinyl top and bottom, it works as a scratch protection but more so to make it unique to me.
I enjoy my Apple devices but the plain sterile look isn't me personally.
I'll have a red accent here or there on most things but my laptop is completely covered with weird little sayings or stickers of companies that have some sort of importance to me.

Nope..For one i don't even have a table top in my room, so the only place my laptop goes is on my lap. If never falls luckily. Once i finish, i do have those Incase sleeves... + one of these: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31X5MBMC4VL._AC_UL330_SR330,318_.jpg

Proabably going oveboard, but can never have too much protection.
