As I look through this thread I'm amazed at how few people owned Smartphones before the iPhone. And I do remember; when I had my Treo 650 from '05 to '09, it was VERY unique. Very few people had Treos, or any smartphone period. They didn't really take off until 2009 or so.

My dad gave me the Treo 650 as a hand me down when I was like 13, needless to say it blew a lot of middle school minds when they were playing Gameboy Advance and I plugged that thing out instead.

The nokia phone everyone had.

Helio Kickflip
Helio Fin
Helio Ocean
Palm Pixi
iPhone 4S

1994 when I finally had a high enough paying job to afford such a luxury item. Only weighed about 5 pounds and had it installed in my car. The Motorola Bag Phone.

The Motorola StarTac aka StarTrek flip phone came out shortly after and was 'the' phone!

I got my first cellphone in high school because I had a really bad anxiety disorder and was basically terrified of being out of the house and driving. At the time it was unusual for people to have cellphones--I didn't know anyone else who had one. I think my plan gave me 30 minutes a month.

The phone was something that I really loved at the time. I know that these days it's commonplace for people to adore their objects, but back then it was even more special. It was an Ericsson phone, and I know it was blue. It was a phone that grew on you. It was so classic and understated. And so solid. I lost it at one point. I was going to an academic bowl competition, and as I left the car I started vomiting due to anxiety. As I was vomiting I placed the phone on the outside windshield of the car and lost it. Didn't know where I had put it.

Several months later, I found it congealed to leaves collecting at the bottom of the windshield. It had been rained on countless times. And it still worked.

Yea man those were some classic fun phones - first phones I really used for work and play

Oh, can't forget about this beauty :D

I had that phone too!!!!!! My first "smartphone" but it was a pocket PC phone I think. I moved to the Samsung BlackJack after that.

What was some of your first cell phones...before the iPhone?

Nokia 8110 (the Matrix phone from 2000 to 2002) - screen went crazy

Nokia 7110 (the successor of the matrix phone, from 2002 to 2010) - put away because after 8 years it generated a bit of laughs

Nokia 5800 (from 2010 to 2012) - screen went crazy after guarantee expired and I used it with a big magnet on it to make it work. Relatives felt sympathetic and gifted me an iPhone 5. Best gift ever

2012 - current
iPhone 5

Motorola MPX200

This was truly a marvel back in 2003. According to Wikipedia, it was the first Windows Mobile Smartphone device to have wide distribution in the US, along with the Samsung SGH-i600. I remember being amazed by the screen quality, its ability to play MP3s via the SD card reader, and of course custom ringtones via those MP3s was crazy at the time.

Specs:
  • 176 x 220 TFT main display
  • 80 x 48 monochrome secondary display
  • 132 MHz TI OMAP 710 Processor
  • 32 MB of RAM
  • 16 MB internal memory
  • SD MMC/SD Card Slot
  • Li-Ion 80 mAh battery

Little did I know in 4 years, Apple would re-define what a smartphone truly was.
