I assumed people just figured Apple would carry the flat design throughout all their products. However, I think the flat design on the watch looks ugly as heck. Round corners makes more sense on something that you wear.

You disagree there was a manufacturing issue? Explain then why we have no preorder date or even specs list for the apple watch series 7
Manufacturing issue is likely attributed to the new interface between case and screen. Also could be due to the worldwide chip shortage.

Don't buy that. Sorry.
No worries. Matters not what any of us believes.

If the case and screen were exactly identical to the S6, I could consider the possibility of a “last minute” change. At least then they could re-use tooling and components.

For the “last minute” theory to be true here, that means Apple invested in tooling (manufacturing lines) for the flat case and screen, then threw it all out and invested in a second set of new tooling for the new case and new screen. Because not only does design work go into the product, but also goes into the machinery and processes to actually build the product almost at the same time.

I seriously doubt we’ll ever see the Prosser render become an actual released product. Apple also would not invest in design of a new case and screen and the tooling and processes to build them for a 1-year product.

Something has clearly gone wrong with the Watch this year. Even if you assume that the square design was not real (or not designed for a 2021 release), Apple brought the Series 7 to the presentation with no launch date. Is there any precident for that for a main device - AirPower and HomePod were highlighted as sneak peaks when they were debuted? Back in 2017, Apple was having real yield issues with the iPhone X with the FaceID system and sure enough the X debued much later than the iPhone 8, but at least there was a release date given. Now consider that delay was due to engineering challenges of mass producing a minature version of FaceID that had never been done before.
If we look at the S7 Watch the only updates appear to be:
  • Slightly bigger case
  • New OLED panel that is brighter
  • Smaller bezels
  • New cover crystal that allows for 'wrap around' effect and better toughness
  • Dust protection rating
  • Fast charging
How many of these would cause a launch with no date? The case has increased in size before (S3 to S4), the OLED panels are produced by a suppler and there haven't been any issues with the brighter iPhone OLED panels. Smaller bezels could cause an issue if there were issues curling the edge of the flexible panel substrate inside the case. Manufacture of the new cover could have caused an issue (remember the alleged sapphire iPhone screen a few years back that eventually bankrupted the potential supplier?). I can't imagine a dust protection rating noone was clammering for would hold up the launch. Fast charging maybe but I would have thought issues with this would have been flagged much ealier in the year (the main issues being heat generation or battery degradation) and the feature likely bumped to 2022.

As has been pointed out on various threads over and over, Apple works so far in advance that it is very strange that they would get caught out in July/August with low yields if they had been working on these few updates for at least 12 months (if not longer).

As it is the S7 is very underwhelming - it seems the main two updates to hang your hat on are the display (bigger, brighter, wrap-around effect' and fast charging and even then these are not updates that I think people are going to be queing up for. With Apple being Apple I don't think we'll ever know what happened for sure - the company will spin it that nothing was wrong and the delay was due to the pandemic in some way and insiders/former insiders/leakers will provide rumours of abandoned features and 'last minute' design changes which will lack definitive evidence.

I'd wager it's the screen holding things up. Second, possibly the crystals. The rest of that list doesn't seem like a heavy lift, to me. *shrug*

It was shocking, but I think that has happened in the past, just not very often. Obviously the past was a very different time, no pandemic, etc...

But the thing that no one is talking about is that the newer design has been indirectly leaked by Apple. If one goes to the "Introducing Apple Watch Series 7" video on YouTube, during the surf scene, as the watch plunges into the water, it appears to be much more flat and boxy, but at the close up at the end, it's the rounded version. This could mean that they had to delay the new design to next year because they had issues in the last month as production hasn't even started.

Excuses, excuses.

Makes no sense to anyone actually thinking about it.

He'll do this same crap next year if the iPhone 14 doesn't have a punch hole camera. He was wrong and should just own it.
He did own it. In his follow up video, he flat out said, “I was wrong.”

It has a new body so a late switcheroo just lacks logic. It isn't like they ran with the old design and upgraded a couple of internals though even that I would doubt. These things are planned WAY ahead of time. Your theory is they had another new design waiting as a backup plan and switched to it, it is not realistic.
Planned “WAY” ahead with no release date. That defies logic as well.

Please show me where I said they had an alternate design as a backup plan. I said it could’ve been an SE refresh and used that instead.

What’s odd is people so offended by a guy providing a YouTube entertainment channel.
In the end, the choice is yours to believe what’s being leaked and reported so blame yourself if you were let down. I personally enjoy the year round tech content especially during Apple’s down times.

I am happy this redesign didn't happen. Just means I will be keeping my still wonderfully working S4 for another year. Until the battery starts to piss me off, which it hasn't, then I will probably be keeping this thing even longer. S5, S6, and S7 so far has not enticed me to upgrade. I bought the stainless steel S4 and Milanese loop, and so far they have been holding up wonderfully.

I spend some time looking at the video - I think the underwater images are distorting the sides of the watch. Check my screenshots below and look at the video from 36 seconds to 42...

That's because Leakers are Losers and have absolutely no creative skills or abilities whatsoever. So they sit around all day making up Leaks in their Feeble little minds.

I choose to believe that Apple scrapped the design last minute. I can't remember the last time they announced something and didn't announce a release date.

It's not unreasonable to think that they had this backup plan in case something went wrong which is why they started manufacturing this late. Yes industrial design takes a long time but it's also not uncommon to have multiple designs in the works in case that things don't work out. Using the existing chassis for a larger screen is a simple and effective backup plan and I think that's exactly what happened.

LOL! Spoken like someone without a hardware engineering background. If you are so sure, you should preempt Apple, get one built like the rumored one before they come out with the next gen Apple Watch, and steal their thunder.

If you want to be technical, all Apple products are over priced. I mean, a lightning cable is $20 on their website. That’s ridiculous. The Apple Watch, no matter what generation is coming in the future, will always be over priced. That’s how Apple boosts its profit margin’s that it does.
The Apple Watch is NOT overpriced. First, they have a wide range of price points based on what you want to spend. Second, if you look at what was available on the watch market before the Apple Watch came along, especially watches with similar build quality especially the straps, the Apple Watch is a very good value.

I would venture it's the same issue that's affected so many other product launches, like the Xbox Series X which is still incredibly hard to buy. COVID and the chip shortage.

Battery life is *not* improved, contrary to what this article says, which is the source of my personal frustration. Luckily, competition improves all products, and now Garmins have AMOLED screens, NFC payment, and onboard music, so I’ll be back on their platform for a while enjoying 5 day battery life, clunky as their user interface can be.
The power draw of a new larger and brighter display would be quite a bit more, so they surely made efficiency improvements and possibly a higher capacity battery to offset that. We won't see an increase in battery life because they had to accommodate those improvements without losing ground.

This website lives on these rumors lol.
Um, it's called "MacRumors". That's what their audience comes for. They should know no rumor is confirmed and MacRumors relies on people supposedly in the know. I've been visiting since before the first iPhone rolled out. I still remember all the varying rumors about a "widescreen iPod with touch controls" that kept being viciously debated here until Steve Jobs hit the stage in '07.

<Snipped>

I obviously edited your post to reflect on your first sentence. It’s entirely subjective’ and holds no value over someone else’s opinion. What you just said is not a fact whatsoever, because there is no set variable.

That’s no different than me using example that ‘I think the M1 MacBook is overpriced’, versus somebody saying that they think it’s actually relatively affordable given the capabilities/power v.s. the competition.

Were you here as well for the everlasting PowerBook G5 rumors? That's my fav. [I often wonder if they did any prototypes...]

NOT
40 --> 41
44 --> 45
That's true, I forgot about that, but still not a form factor redesign!
And where does it say that the series 7 is 41 mm and 45 mm?
Although they said say the watch is slightly bigger, Apple did not mention the case size during the event, nor is it listed on their site.

i dont get why people salivate over watching him "fail" - it's like people around here have absolutely nothing better to do than hate the guy for...absolutely no reasonable reason.

especially when he is one of a wide group of analysts / leakers who all got this wrong.

so....what's going on? are you also loving that the rest were proven wrong? or you just have irrational hatred for people you dont know.
Couldn't agree more! Well put.
If you listen to his podcast Genius Bar (which I highly recommend) you will see that he is a highly rational person, has an awesome personality, and despite the fact that this is obviously his job, does it because it's something he enjoys.
Not to mention that Mark Gurman and Kuo Ming Chi both said the Apple Watch would have flat edges as well.

I don’t remember those, but I’ve always been a PC user so I always just paid attention to iPods and iPhones.
