The more I think about it, the more the rumour has never made any sense.

The Apple Watch is not in a position to see the kind of year-over-year changes that the iPhone experiences. It's already so small, so there likely isn't much room to make it any thinner or lighter. Instead, the challenge is to increase the screen size while keeping its dimensions the same overall.

You are also not going to hold the Apple Watch the same way you hold an iPhone, so giving it the same form factor literally makes no sense. And Apple appears to have doubled down on their design language of rounded corners. I predict that next year's Apple Watch will have largely the same form factor, with the major hardware updates coming in the form of additional health sensors.

It's clearly not a last-minute alternative. This was always in the works. You get a new display (which I believe will be more significant once you wear it in person vs seeing it online), improved durability, faster charging, a couple of new software features (enhanced fall detection, built-in keyboard), and the processor is possibly more efficient in order to power the larger display without any change to battery life.

It's in line with what I would expect from an annual Apple Watch update. Apple continues to move mountains in order to make annual refreshes to the iPhone and apple watch lineup happen every year, what more with the pandemic and the additional challenges posed by more employees continuing to work from home.

In all, I think this remains a solid offering that should see plenty more people buying their first Apple Watch this year.

Probably a clever chess move from Apple. Release false information to known leakers at an early stage. This reduces their credibility and ultimately leads to a reduction of rumors. This way there's also no need for last minute changes just in order to prove them wrong.

Yep. Especially when the fake rumor is for something only weirdos would want - a watch that looks like something a third rate android device manufacturer would make for your wrist.

Another benefit of fake leaks - the clone makers waste their time firing up tooling to make devices few people will now want, because the devices won’t make their wearers look like wealthy apple customers.

Sorry completely disagree - it’s patently obvious they tried flat edges this year and the production issues caused a reverse track. The model is “preproduction” and not even announced a timescale. That’s a big issue - and one you can’t attribute to this years design with such iterative updates.

That’s actually NOT his hobby. If you do the back research on John Prosser, he was nothing more than a journalist. He considers himself to be an ‘Apple insider’, but he doesn’t have any of the actual hard data that we see from the likes of Ming Kuo. Furthermore, his accuracy rate is probably about 20% or less over the last three years for Apple product predictions. I’d say that’s a pretty poor batting average for somebody this is their ‘hobby’.
First of all, if you would actually listen to his podcast, which is much more casual, you would see that it is his hobby, and he mainly does it because it's something he enjoys.
And to counter your second point, the site Appletrack, which list the track records of many leakers, has him at 74.3% accurate. (to me it should probably be higher as many leaks are still pending on Appletrack which Jon did get right, such as he 1TB option for iPhone 13, and iPad mini redesign, as well as others)

Appletrack - tracking Apple rumors & sources

Let’s be honest, nothing went wrong with the debut of the AW S7 bar everyone believing the rumours.

The new watch looks great and should be a great upgrade or to a first time buyer wanting their first Apple Watch.

What he means by ameuterish is the transition from iPad mini to Aplle watch, just a hard cut from Tim onstage to him onstage in another place.
iPad lady, down through the floor to Tim on stage in room below. Tim introduces Jeff, who we meet outdoors via drone fly by. Never a hard cut. Besides, Jeff was talking about outdoor activity tracking with the watch. What better place to be than just that – outdoors.

The satellite phone support was a much better leak finder. After the iPad goes flat and the iPhone goes flat anyone could plausibly claim they guessed the Watch would go flat. So if Apple fired anyone for that “leak” I would expect them to lose the unfair dismissal lawsuit hard.

You might be totally right. But, I think you are oversimplifying things. There are typically key details that only one path of information could have provided. Based on the details and renders that were able to be created, I believe this follows a pattern that I have personally seen in a company trying to trap information leaks. Of course anyone can guess anything, it isn't about that. Certain specifics and timing are relevant. So why didn't they guess at the flat design two months prior? I freely admit I might be wrong and while I have no first hand knowledge of any of this, it certainly FEELS like it was an attempt to tighten up security.

I’d say the bands settles it—flat sides was never a thing. The 41/45 mm series 7 band lugs are more ROUNDED than the series 4-6 bands at the lug center. There is no way rounder lugs would have matched up with flat sides. And the bands, which also require tooling to manufacture, were not delayed. If the design was flat until the last minute as has been proffered here, then series 7 bands wouldn’t be produced in sufficient quantities to have them in consumer hands last week.

Because flat is so much more complicated than achieving a precise curvature all the way around.

Oh, wait…

I’ve said it elsewhere, but why would anyone want hard edges on a watch? Especially on a fitness product where you’re moving your arms a lot.

It is quite interesting this big electronic retailer in Nordics has even product pictures accidentally posted on their online store with square design.

I think is actually not apple band and producer of the band just believed that design was also the one we did not get.
