A lot of older Macs had fax machines built in but we didn't call them iFaxes, to call the iPhone the iPhone is to emphasize that it's a phone but minimizes everything else. It's basically a multi-touch computer, with GPS, wireless Internet, a camera, and cellular voice communication. And it all integrates in cool ways. So, I think a name that means nothing like iPod is better than iPhone.
You could make a phone call from a netbook, which doesnt mean you'd want to call it MaxiPhone.
With convergence do you think there will be a day when Apple still makes non-communicating iPods (classic, shuffle, nano)? And if not, why lose the iPod brand name when it seems in my opinion to be stronger than iPhone....
I dunno something like iPod Mobile.
