Switch to Verizon. All Verizon lacks is the iPhone. I simply think I like it too much to actually leave AT&T without it.

They are. Well, not exactly. But the AT&T 4G and the Verizon 4G are going to be pretty much the same thing (a standard that evolved from GSM), so the technical difficulties of having 2 different iPhones will be greatly lessoned..

Its great that they are simalar but what about the areas that do not have 4g, apple will still have to create a cdma phone fof these areas

I'm not going to do anything. Verizon is horrible in my area. Plus I like the iPhone the way it is, in terms of interface, etc. Can it be improved? Sure...but not by putting on that nasty red VZ theme...BLAH...

Thanks, but no thanks...

The big question is whether the writer of the article is right about the iPhone supporting the existing Verizon 2G and 3G networks. If so, then people wouldn't be losing anything switching to the Verizon iPhone.

There has been speculation that a Verizon iPhone would be a LTE phone. But if it didn't have backward compatibility, it would not be very useful in the next few years.

For myself, I'm in the early parts of a contract with ATT, and only know one person with Verizon. So I would lose the ability for some people to use their M2M minutes with me if I switched. I also like the ability to switch phones in certain cases.

Just think, if they did the cdma phone, all those people would then get to buy a new phone as 4G rolls out. How cool would that be for apple sales?!? My opinion is the 4G rollout is going to be slow ... and God help us if they push the digital TV crap back again. It took analog 4 or 5 years to be turned off and not show up on new phones (remember tri-mode). Do I think it will happen ... how the heck should I know. I use verizon because in my little area of the world, they have the best coverage. I'll wait ... or live with my iPod touch.

Myth. Verizon requires a data plan, so it doesn't matter to them if a phone has WiFi or not from that standpoint. Battery life is a more likely reason.
Either way we all need wifi on our phones.

ATT is also switching. LTE is so radically different from GSM or CDMA, that there's no "evolution" involved, except in the heads of marketing folk.

PS. Using Wikipedia as a source is always dangerous.
right now the use of wiki is the only source for I formation on 4g.

I would switch. My wife and son have Verizon cell phones and I have the Verizon Hub at home, my mom, sisters, etc all have Verizon. I would leave AT&T in a heartbeat. Verizon seems to have good coverage, we have to use them for wireless data modems everywhere because when AT&T and Sprint don't have good coverage, Verizon does.

I was linking to wiki to show that both Verizon and AT&T will be using LTE.

You're saying that's innacurate?

On the off-chance that you're talking about my inaccurate comments about 'evolving,' I think it's pretty clear that I have a shakey grasp of the material, not that wikipedia is wrog.

I'd much prefer if you would say "hey, you don't understand this" than trying to blame wiki for my mistakes.

This thread is crazy talk. I mean to the OP, alphatecz?!? First off, must you reply to every comment? Second, you have made several posts where you clearly do NOT know much information about Verizon, get your facts straight. Third. Verizon is fantastic network. Look at the statistics. They seriously do have the best coverage. Yes I have Verizon, however I would switch to ATT if I really wanted to. So I am not a super fan of verizon ( they are slow on technology, minus the storm) but it sure seems like you go on bashing without knowing much.

To answer your question, if Verizon gets the iphone, i will be upgrading.

I was a Verizon customer for more than a decade, I switched to AT&T for the iPhone.

I got so fed up with Verizon I will never go back. No GSM (your CDMA phone won't work outside the US), no removing your own simcard into a new phone, they charge for every little stinking thing like apps, ringtones, VCast, etc., their GPS costs $7.99 per month... Everything costs money, and things you buy on your phone like ringtones EXPIRE. I had a Razor for a few years and not only do they get it 9 months later than the GSM version, they remove features from the phone because they want to charge you for them through their service instead of letting you have the free ones built into the phone. For example you can't put your own ringtones on the phone (they disable that feature in firmware), you have to pay $2.99 for one of Verizon's. And they put the same damned crappy OS/menu on every phone and it is SLOW. Let them go to hell.

The iPhone model runs 100% counter to Verizon's model. Apple's app store vs. Verizon's built in (rip-off) store. Free video versus vCast. Either Verizon will have to leave the iPhone alone, or they will have to change their application business model.

As far as coverage I'm in the NY suburbs and my wife is still on Verizon. There are spots she gets no coverage and I'm fine, and vice versa. I'd call it a tie, but I might even say Verizon has more dead spots or spots where it drops to analog. In fact a few months after I got the iPhone they put a 3G tower in my neighborhood so I'm happy as a clam. I have 3G coverage virtually everywhere I go in my travels.

Understood.

You were just repeating a common myth, which is not your direct fault. That's why I left your name off the quote. Didn't you notice?

I'd much prefer if you would say "hey, you don't understand this" than trying to blame wiki for my mistakes.

I _am_ blaming Wiki in this case. The Wiki articles on LTE are out of date and very slanted towards a GSM fanboy point of view.

It's a pity that Apple has made sure that US phones can't use foreign SIMs to save money, thus negating a primary GSM feature.

As far as using a new phone on Verizon, you can switch within minutes using *228 or their website.

With the exception of GPS (which is changing now), none of those restrictions have ever applied to Verizon smartphones.

Many people apparently jumped from dumbphones to their first smartphone, never knowing the advantages of the latter, which have always been available on Verizon: you can use or install any app, song, video, ringtone, or theme that you want.

That's actually far more freedom than you get with the iPhone.

honestly I never said I knew much I was just going by what I read and what I noticed. But you proved my point about the storm. What was it that you said that your aren't a super fan of verizon and they are ow in technology, minus the storm... Hmmmmm I think i proved my point and like I said I'm going by what I know and been told by verizon empolyees and users. So thank you very much.

like i said verizon charges extra for add on, such as gps and so on ...

I have both AT&T and Verizon. I would drop AT&T in a second if the iPhone came to Verizon. As a National Guard soldier I find myself out in the middle of no where often (think Mojave Desert) and while I'm able to call home on my Verizon phone, my soldiers with TMO and AT&T are asking, "where are the bars?" (not the drinking kind).

Yeah I picked up AT&T just to get the iPhone, it's a great phone in most respects. But I will happily pay the ETF once/if Verizon ever gets the iPhone.

Again, there is no "and so on" that I can think of.

GPS is the only thing they charged extra for on their smartphones, and thank goodness, they've said they'll remove that restriction before mid-summer. (I think they just couldn't shake the idea that they've used A-GPS since 2000 or so, and hoped to make money off location based services. Now everyone's jumping on the A-GPS bandwagon and Verizon's slow to let go.)

At least Verizon's control of GPS gives everyone a chance at actually having a turn-by-turn app with voice output, even on dumbphones. It's also accurate in built-up areas, because it automatically gets aid from Verizon's own accurate E911 tower triangulation (not wimpy cell id) if the GPS signal isn't strong.

Weep

I would weep if Verizon gets their hands on the iPhone. I do not like Verizon and switched to get the iPhone.

I will stay on AT&T. Everyone I know is on AT&T, so I pretty much just get unlimited talk to anyone I want. If I got Verizon, I'd have to get the unlimited plan which would cost more. Plus, I don't want CDMA.

If my iphone had the same capabilities on Verizon, I would switch in an instant. ATT coverage sucks bad. I never had so many dropped calls.
