What you're looking for is already out there, it's called an iPhone.
:)

I have a Touch, but completely understand and agree with your point.

It will be interesting to see when the Touch goes to 64GB and the iPhone to 32GB.

I think that is the sweet spot where we will see Touch users migrate to the iPhone platform.

The features, and price, and memory.

I would only upgrade if the new style is so amazing that I'm drooling, OR, whether they build in speakers and bluetooth. That would be kwl. i don't really need the camera, it would only be like 2MP anyway. maybe i will, maybe i won't. I shall have to see whether it's all that different from the version we have now. :p

My 30GB Video iPod doesn't hold a charge, so it's been sidelined into a reading light position. I'll pick up a 32GB version of the new Touch. I guess I'd like actual volume buttons, and an iPhone 3G-like back plate. I expect a price drop which would be nice :p

So there's been a lot of speculation about what features the expected 2nd generation iPod touch might have, and what the price might be, but I'm wondering how present Touch owners feel about replacing their current Touch with the new model.

So do you:
1) Plan to buy the new model no matter what.
2) Will buy it if it has XYZ features -- name what features would convince you to upgrade.
3) Will buy it if it is priced at $### -- name your price!
4) Plan to stick it out with the present model for the forseeable future.

Looking forward to hear what people think!

Nothing would convince me.

My next upgrade will be to an iPhone when it has a minimum of 32GB and they've sorted out the bugs.

I have to say, my friend has a 16GB iPhone and it feels like a cumbersome hunk of plastic compared to my Touch. It feels like something you would get in a Happy Meal.

An application that allows me to post to macrumors without being flamed to kingdom come.

Edit: I Re-read the thread... Impossible.

If there was an iPhone that had 32GB, and that I could buy and use as an iPod/PDA/gaming machine without activating it as a phone, then I would probably buy one. Would be sweet if I could get an internet data service for it for under $30 a month. But I want to be able to pick my own service provider, and not have to get into a multi-year contract. I most certainly don't want to pay for a cell phone service I would rarely use.

As long as Apple keeps the iPhone tied up to exclusive deals with designated cell phone companies, there's always going to be a number of us who want the extra features on the iPhone (mike, speaker, camera, GPS, external volume control, etc) to be ported to the Touch.

No-look volume buttons
GPS (for navigation and Golf applications)
Bluetooth (Stereo)
mic and speakers
disk mode
Sync with Outlook Tasks and Notes ala Pocket Mirror and the Palm
Handwriting recognition
CF/SD/MiniSD/MicroSD (I don't care which format)
Bigger screen

In short, i still want a Newton.

I am waiting for disc capacities to double before I upgrade from my 40GB iPod 4G to a mid-range 64GB Touch.

Hopefully the software will be updated to make the Touch play MP4s with resolutions greater than 640 X 480. There is no-way I would re-encode all the MP4s in my library.

The flash capacities should double in this upgrade. If not, they will DEFINITELY be doubled by sometime in 2009.

As for videos higher than 640x480, I think there might be an issue with the touch's processor not being able to render video with resolutions above that properly.

Of course, i may be wrong, as though it seems that the touch carries a better processor than those found in the classics that play 640x480. of course, the touch does run background apps, and i don't think apple would opt for processor-intensive rendering so demanding that it would forbid processes like mail/weather/etc. running in the background.

i understand people want speakers but I am still wondering why. Its not like you can play it at a party or something..and everyone can hear it. it will sound like music played from a phone...it can never be compared to a true speaker system with bass and such. I would much rather have a video camera or just camera then speakers.

A phone camera can never be compared to a proper camera. The point is it's for convenience. Sometimes just having the iPod there with speakers is an easy way to listen to a podcast for example. In other ways, sometimes you don't want to isolate yourself away with your music - just some background sounds.

Also, the speaker would be very useful for all the apps that have sound effects. Phonesaber is not the same with headphones.

I am no expert in CPUs but I doubt downscaling any video to the resolution of the Touch would be processor intensive if the bitrate is within the Touch's limitations. If it is processor intensive then how do you explain the Touch being able to upscale low-res videos?

By the way, I do not own one so I am assuming that an iPod Touch can upscale videos lower than the screen resolution.

What if it was free?

I just got an Itouch last week. Really wanted an Iphone but Im a verizon customer so cant do that. Then I found this website. http://select.freebiejeebies.co.uk/4282 It was so easy and no silver gold offer BS. Just Referalls. I needed 15 to get the Itouch. Took me less than two weeks. Definately check it.. If not youll be sorry.

i don't own one either ;). but i will soon...hopefully! anyways, about your question, you do present a good point, and I think that the ipod touch can de-scale high rez video now that you mention it upscaling low-rez. but there is a tradeoff, as playing videos higher than the native resolution of the touch will not increase the video quality, and those videos will take up more space.

although i do agree with the pain of re-converting video. my macbook processor takes long enough just to rip/convert them once! mac pro users should lend out there CPU power at a small fee. ;)

Well, two of my friends have a Touch. It seems slow at times, when it shouldn't be. Only one of them have it jailbreaked. My guess is that the ram is about 32MB, comparing it to my Somo650 with 128MB ram. This, of course, assuming that with Apples locked down system, the Touch's OS uses as little resources as the Somo running Windows Mobile.
The Touch (and iPhone) have 128MB of RAM.

Yup. I figured that today. Turns out it must have to do with the efficiency (or lack thereof) of the way the firmware is written: Not as efficient as windows mobile.
Which brings me to this: How is it that people need to download the entire 248MB each time a firmware update is released? I mean, on OS X and Windows Mobile, you just download the necessary files, install them and then reboot. You don't download the entire OS.

i would buy it if it had a aluminum or plasic backing cuz i HATE and i really mean hate the stainless steel cuz i dont like the scratches all over it

also i would like to see bluetooth or i will no buy it at all because i have a 300$ bluetooth headset that i cant use because the ipod doesnt ave blutooth

Camera Speakers and Recorder thats al i would need oh and maybe a price drop or make these features available on the 8 gig too or 16 gig i have no need for a 32 gig

I'll only buy one if:

- $199.99 (or cheaper, I guess )
- Camera

I would trade in my current iPod touch. I just can't see what else they could add to it to make it so much better than it already is.
