I have picked up many a hitchhiker back in the day. Been picked up alot too. But that was different times. Nobody ever thinks they can get socially engineered. Ever. And yet, many do. Often because they have stuff on their mind that keeps them from thinking clearly. I have known some seriously intelligent people that clicked on the wrong SPAM and broke their computer.

Still wondering what kind of "emergency" requires a phone call with me making a decision in ten seconds? Obviously, a car accident is one. In which case I would call the police. I am from NYC. And believe me, there were many scammers around and this was 30 years before the Interwebs. Many. 3 Card Monty anyone?

I've had people ask me for money at the airport to buy a ticket home with some sad story that they've run out of cash in the big city. Everybody knows that a same-day ticket at the airport costs like $2500, and really if you're trying to get from A to B using the least amount of money possible you should take the bus. So really they're only trying to get some cash.

But this crap works with at least some people, that's why they keep doing it, and why some people would fall for this "lend me your phone" thing.

I'd say no way to a stranger handling my Max. If a friend or family member asks, I'll put my Apple Silicone case on before I hand it to them.

Anyone ever have this happen? On occasion, I show a retail person a picture of something so that they can see if they have it in stock (if it's not readily identifiable), and they try to take my phone from me so that they can see the pic better. They just reach out and try to grab it. I'm nice about my refusal, but they're always taken aback when I pull it away.

I showed a Groupon on my iPhone 7 Plus at checkout at a restaurant. I was holding the phone with both hands, and the guy tried to pull it out of my hand to get a better look. "I'll hang onto the phone, thanks".

Since this phone is the most expensive phone ever. What would you guys do in a situation where you were lets say at a mall or somewhere in public and a stranger asks if he can use your phone to make a quick call due to an emergency. What would you do?

I'm especially curious to know what you caseless and naked iphone xs max users would do.

Step 1.. put the phone away in a nice secure place.
Step 2.. crank up the phone app on the AW
Step 3.. Ask for the phone number and press send
Step 4.. Tell em.. talk to the hand..

If it was an obvious emergency such as someone us hurt or a child or dog is accidentally locked in their car along with their phone then sure but some people cannot be trusted in today’s world. I’ve had multiple people ask for gas money at the gas station because “their car is right over there and is out of gas”. This is probably due to the fact that I drive a nicer car but I never trust anyone.

I think as someone else mentioned, most people would asses the situation & use judgment. (And again, depending on the type of emergency, I would most likely make the call myself.)

But you do see a ton of people give their phones to strangers to take photos. I've seen this at theme parks, airports, parties, concerts, etc. I've been asked many times & been handled phones by strangers to take pictures.

There are many people who are casual about their phones. Obviously, we are on a site dedicated to tech, so we're a bit different, lol.

But this is just human nature. There are people who are causal about the phones, but would never let someone else drive their cars, even valets. Or lend clothes, or Airbnb / host, etc.

While there are people here who would never hand over their phones, but happily give car keys & vehicle to a valet.

People value different things, so in theory it's not crazy, that people would hand over a phone......I personally wouldn't, but could call on the behalf or help some other way.

This is why psychological tests to buy guns should be stricter
?? I'm not understanding why someone who can kill someone with their bare hands would need a psychological test to buy a gun ?? Actually, someone with the mental toughness and discipline to have those skills, might be much more likely to pass any test and should own a gun to protect the rest of us. ;)

This is different to me, in that people are with their families which gives them credibility and lends some air of safety to the transaction.

A Valet is much safer since the venue will have insurance to cover any loss, theft, damage.

True, but the original question wasn't based solely on the assumption that the person who needed the phone for an emergency was an automatic thief. In fact, the original question was more or less about the price of the item....

So my point about the valet is in reference to people handing over something of value to a stranger.

The same applies to asking a stranger to take a photo & handing over the phone. Doesn't mean they will run off, they could accidentally drop it, have food / liquid on their hands, etc. (Because there was also a part that mentioned using the phone without a case.)

This isn't just about theft, it's about what people would freely trust a stranger with. And you do have people who will not valet simply because they might not feel secure with how the valet may handle the vehicle in a traditional sense.....not they will steal it or total it.

Not just worried about a thief, but I'm concerned that the person will get fumble fingers and drop the phone. Good luck forcing them to pay for the damage.

I was in a restaurant in China having dinner with my family/friends. I went to use the washroom and when I came out there was a girl asking me if she could use my phone because she couldn’t find her mom(she’s about 13-16). I was in a good mood so I gave it to her and right after her phone call she dropped my brand new iPhone X on the ground. It was iPhone X launch day in China, I only had a screen protector on with no case and no apple care+. Thankfully the screen and back glass were fine, but the stainless steel band suffered a small dent. I was devastated after that accident but what can I do? Force a teenager pay for the repair of a small dent on my phone? I just walked away at the end.

Anyways, I am not letting anyone taking a chance with my phone unless they are in life or death situation.

I would say no unless it was a true emergency and they had to speak to a loved one. If they needed an emergency service I would call for them.

I would tell him to step off and go find a pay phone. They still exist here and there.

If it was a real emergency, I’d call 911 for him and relay the info.

Years ago in CA, we had a rash of apple pickings where one person or small groups of people would approach one person, ask for their phone and run away. One time at the bus stop I was approached by a group of young teen girls who asked to use my phone (I think I had a blackberry then) and I said to the lead girl “what’s a cell phone?”.

They were too shocked to react. I got on the bus and waved at them through the window, phone in hand.

That's a hard no. I'll make the call for them if they'd like, or I'd offer them spare change.

Ha this topic popped up again on my alerts.

I must look very trustworthy or incapable of running very fast :p because people at various tourist attractions are always handing me their expensive phones and asking me to take their pictures. So it has come in very handy for me that I am at home on Pixels, iPhones and Samsungs.

I suppose if we wanted to, us middle-aged motherly types could get away with so much. :D

No and walk away as quickly as possible. About 15 years ago a young girl asked me to use my phone (non smart phone). It was late at night and we were waiting for a bus. In the end I let her use it and she gave the phone back to me, without issue. However today I wouldn't unless it was a young child or somehting.

I have had others ask me if they could use my iPhone in the past, and of course I say no. But I do offer, only if they really _need_ to make a phone call, I would make the call for them, but I don’t allow the person to actually use my phone.
