Westinghouse 1080p HDTV

Here is a westinghouse 1080p set for $1000 this is actually a set i am looking at buy in about a month and a half or so.

You can look at exact specs at the westinghouse page for this monitor.

If you don't decide to keep it this is what i would spend it on.

now this seems like something i'd be interested in. except, will it accept over-the-air HDTV?

well, that part i didn't know. if the iMac isn't doing it for ya, then absolutely, sell it, add in the $1200, and upgrade.

i was under the assumption that for now, the iMac was doing great for ya, in which case it seemed silly to jump the gun and upgrade just yet. but if that's not so, then scrap what i said and go for a MP.

well, i really don't make any money with those video files though......so is it justifiable (i know it's not a word) to sell and get a mac pro?

I actually have two HDTVs, both 720p LCDs. 1 Samsung I love and one Toshiba I love to hate. Bringing the total number of LCD screens in the house to 5 including the ones on the computers. :D There's only one 20" CRT SDTV still in service. Shard's HDTV thread is a great place for HDTV info on MR.

I would really suggest getting the motivation for the TV first, e.g. the PS3 so that you don't feel ripped off when you pay that much for a TV and still play 480i content on it. :p This tends to cause you to spend more money, which you didn't have in the first place since you spent it all on a TV.

B

thanks. i'll check out that HD thread. also, if i get the PS3, i won't have a TV to play it on....so it works both ways...except i already have a xbox 360 if i got a TV

Yeah yeah, TV's computers video games.... honestly I'd blow it on booze and girls. I'm that sad really... save it? Make my life better in the long run? Nahhhhhhhhh.

One weekend of fun. :D

I'd say,

  • get a massage (no kidding), and
  • go on a holiday trip with your g/f.
  • Take some professional singing lessons (no kidding either).
All these things are supposed to be really good for you.

Save the rest.

You don't need a Mac Pro. You can always use distributed rendering for video.

I'd sell the iMac and get a Mac Pro in a heartbeat. Wouldn't you rather tidy up the clutter of all those external hard drives and have four much faster cores to play with?

well of course i want one, but i've only got $1200.

and there might be an 8-core one soon

Then start saving mony and if you finally have enough for a Mac Pro, the 8-core option might already be available.

Doesn't seem like anyone's mentioned it yet, but if you have any debt pay it off first.

No debt? Good for you.

If that's the case, then I'd say invest it..... A CD, mutual funds, etc. Make the money work for you.

You mentioned you're in college. Wouldn't saving the money to pay for school expenses and general expenses be the smart thing to do?

Apart from saving or throwing them on the fun stuff mentioned in the previous posts, I would buy a Canon Digital Rebel and go out and shoot to death.

so i think i found a buyer for my powerbook. looks like i'm gonna get 1200 for it. now, the question is: what am i gonna do with it?

i already have:
white 2.0 macbook
a 17" intel imac core duo 1.83 ghz
60GB ipod video
4 GB ipod nano
PSP
Xbox 360
Dell 20.1" display

so here are the first things that pop in my head:

save for Mac Pro
Save for 30" Display
buy HDTV

don't know what else. any ideas? advice?
by an 80GB ipod

Canon SLR or the new Leica/Lumix LX2 depending on your needs.

With the latter, you will have plenty left for an Apple phone when it is released.

sooo....tempting......

i actually might try to do that. depends on how hard it is to sell the imac

i think i want to buy something that records HDTV on my mac. i want over-the-air signals....aka free. but is this good? also, which thing to buy?

Put it all on "Black 17"...

...and then if it hits, you can get a Mac Pro, 30" Cinema Display, a 24" iMac, a MacBook Pro, a MacBook, one of each iPod, and a new car to take it all home in! Just a thought...:D

If there is nothing you need, then you should save it. Put it aside. Open up a new bank account and keep it there.

I am a recent graduate, living on an absolute shoestring budget, and every penny i can afford to save i put it towards paying off my PowerBook, that i had to buy for uni through a pay monthly contract. So far i have only paid the interest, and now i have still yet to pay the value of the PowerBook, a whole 18 months ago.

If you don't need anything, don't waste your money. Save it for something that you might need one day soon.

Rich.
