The ability to target a range of emails to delete instead of having to tap each one and the hit delete.

and right now - I wouldn't mind if they tweaked the software to increase the volume on the speak of the iPhone 4 by about 25 percent.

You've been able to do that since 2.0.

You just hit the edit button, select all the emails you want and then press the delete button.

You misread me

I don't want to select EACH email I want to delete and then press delete. I want to press one - then scroll down and double press or SOMETHING and then click to delete to kill a series of messages at once.

I work for a news org and sometimes I get 20-30 emails at once I don't even need to read. Would be nice to kill in a few key strokes vs tagging them all

Fair enough. That would be a powerful addition, but it could screw a lot of people up when they accidentally select some emails they didn't mean to.

Live TV feed for key sports events like NBA Finals and World Cup Soccer

Ability to use the iPhone as a wifi hotspot even for one device.

I'd like to see widgets on the multi-tasking bar that allow to quickly set bluetooth on/off, same for 3G and Wireless ... and brightness. The most rudimentary functions of the SBSettings for jailbroken phones. File system access would also be nice. And the ability to email one's text conversations to oneself.

A lot of great stuff in this thread. Add:

- Different tones for a first vs. second text alert.

- Don't kick me out of the App Store app whenever I buy / upgrade something!! (I mean, Apple... in your brick-and-mortar stores... do you escort a customer to the exit and forcibly toss them out the door just because they bought something? Seriously.)

- Make the "Location" field in Calendar smart. Like, let me link a contact (address).

- Delay the "lock" in the lock screen. If I turn off the phone, then immediately realize I forgot something and turn it back on again, don't give me the unlock screen again.

- Better Speakerphone management. This thing with the flipping keypad vs. call options is really, truly an awful design. How about a dedicated on-screen button for Speakerphone? Or at least how about an "Answer on Speakerphone" button when a call comes in?

- Calendar year view.

- Ability to quickly dup a calendar entry (I'm leaving my dentist and want to make another appt, identical to the one that's happening right now, but 6 months down the road ... don't make me enter all those fields again).

You've been able to do this since OS 1.0. Just go into your passcode settings and set the delay.

- Calendar year view.
I don't understand what you want here. Do you want a view of all years? So it will tell you if you have to do something in 2009?

LOL, I have thought about this before... SO true...

No, I'm talking about the "Slide to Unlock" thingy, not the "Punch in your PIN" thingy.

I want to see a calendar showing the entire year, not just a single month.

If there's not enough screen real-estate (and, seriously, I had this on a much lower resolution Treo years ago), then just show a few months and let me scroll up and down to see the others.

well if this is the update that people are expecting within the next two weeks it most likely will NOT be 4.1

odds are it'll be 4.0.1

in 4.1 i'd like to see an ability to turn of backgrounding for certain apps (through settings there could be a toggle where certain apps are never run in the background)

EDIT: Oh god i forgot the biggest one!! CUSTOM SMS TONES!

Correct. This thread is about 4.1, not 4.0.1 which will probrably only be a fix for stability and bugs. Let's hope that 4.1 is released later this fall (maybe to coincide with the iPad version of iOS 4) and that it includes some of these suggestions.

There is still a lot of functionality that could be added to the iOS platform.

Landscape Lock in addition to the Portrait Lock already available.

At first I thought of course you can do that, just turn it sideways, open the multitasking panel, and press the orientation lock...

But, nope, doesn't work. Kind of surprising. Those types of things (what, a couple more lines of code) make you scratch your head.

I'd like the ability to organize my photos on my phone without having to use iPhoto by dragging my photos on top of another to create folders like we do with our apps.

- Double-tap & hold for favorites or user-selectable function (like in 3.x). This was in the iOS4 betas.
- PRINTING.

That's all I really want.

However, an overhauled notification system and customizable lock screen would be great, and I'd really love live (e.g. like Calendar) Weather and Clock icons, maybe compass too. But I have a feeling we wouldn't see those until iOS5, if ever.

My list

- Want SMS alters not to show someone's name when you turn OFF preview. (My gf is noisy)
- Of course be able to put your own alters for email, sms, calender events, etc.
- Printing will be sweet.
- Landscape for google maps.
- Improve weather app.
- Sounds profiles will be cool
- Bring back Favorites
