This is Apple we're talking about here. The tray-loading drives aren't going to last much longer.

Gonna go with a big ol' "NO" on that one. Tray-loading drives will stay. If they were going to get rid of them and take their fastest ODD speed from 16x to 8x, they would have done it with the first Mac Pro.

A glowing Apple Logo on the front.

*slap* :p

- PLAIN optical drive bays. I don't want to mess with bezels.

That's actually not so bad - being how they'll still be covered by the aluminum door, but just have a little more clearance to allow the bezel. I approve.

Sorry guys...couldn't resist :)

What would I like to see? How about some system lighting kinda like this:

Or maybe Apple should adopt varnished wood for a traditional, yet stylistic look:

:D :D :D :D :D :D

I can see it now! The quad 2.93 "Blade Runner" and "Steampunk" editions.:D Maybe I am wacko for thinking it.

My friends and I had an "idea" once where we would "liberate" a powermac G3 from the A/V lab and replace as much of the chassis as would could with brass... then we would make a giant plastic door with the liquid cooling system going through it :D. Steampunk Mac.

Unfortunatly, the "Revolution" didn't go over very well....

Sehnsucht's post got me thinking that Apple ought to make a bamboo (outer case only, for obvious reasons) one. Dell has one that is about the size of the mini.

I want the following in the following order in the new mac pro case.

1) A margarita-vile
2) A 70 inch OLED display that appears out of thin air.
3) An automated mini-gun turret built into the top to keep people from touching my mac.
4) A $1000 bill printer
5) A mini apple store inside that sells full sized macs for free.

Until that happens I will not buy a mac pro.... whats that you say? I already have one? Oh.....

Looks like a computer right out of mini-series based on Frank Hebert's Dune novels

How about a redesigned power on switch that you could find by feel?

A HDD led wouldn't make me mad either.

Most HDDs have a connection for an LED access light. You could jam a few LEDs in the cheese-grate front and run fly-wires to the HDDs. :D

MenuMeters will put it in the menu-bar if that's acceptable. ;)

probably buried in this thread already, but I'd love to see a return to cabled internal HDD connectors so I can RAID card without Apple...and more rear USB ports.

I hate to get on my high and mighty platform... But yeah. The HDD trays are the worst part of the current generation. Yes, even worse then MDP (as the GTX 285 is now an alternative gfx card). While the soldiered ports to the motherboard are a kinda cool concept, it forces us to use an LSI POS (If memory serves correctly). If Apple had a real RAID card (like an Arcea derivative), then it might be forgivable. But alas, DIY magic makes a new HDD tray so that the HDDs can attach to a third-party RAID card.

I hope this mod is discontinued so we don't have to worry about third-party dropping support for SL, or for Mac in general

From what I can tell, the '08 sleds would allow clearance for cable connections in the '09's. Assuming this is correct, and they fit, it would open the '09 up to 3rd party cards, albiet likely at the loss of the ports on the board. (Unless a right angle SATA cable can also be attached for use in the optical bays). All the cabling exists for such a mod, but it's not an easy prospect given the results are uncertain.

Eliminating the iPass cable was bad for user options via 3rd party solutions. :( LSI actually makes decent gear, but they don't develop their own products for Mac. It would have been a custom version for Apple, who likely wrote the EFI firmware and drivers themselves.

External is quite doable, but more expensive. :(

i dont need drivebays yet, but im planning to get 2x 640GB raid0 when the snow leo comes out. and thats it for my drives then, if i dont replace them. :S

the risers are awesome yeah. ;)
id think they would increase the size a little to fit 12 RAM slots in it... but they didnt . so if that didnt move them i dont know what will (except form over function concept)

by the way, to the "smaller greater" comments:
i like my cpu fan rotating at 500rpm as it makes computer more silent than my laptop.i also like the fact that my drives are currently at 22 degrees and the temparatures average at 35 degrees celsium (just made that average from iStat)

No no no no no no no no NO HELL NO and SCREW THAT.

Slot loading drives are more expensive, slower, less reliable, and less compatible. There is ZERO real world benefit to those pieces of tripe.

Function over form. Airflow is important.

Nope. Again, I prefer function over form.

Who gives a damn?

Honestly, the only change I'd like to see would be the addition of onboard eSATA, and more drive bays.

It needs at least two onboard eSata ports (preferably three, with one in the front, two in the back) and at least 2 more USB ports. I hate using hubs. Additionally, it'd be nice if they could move the USB ports and PCI slots as high in the case as possible, seeing as how a lot of us have our comps on the floor and need the keyboard and monitor to reach.

Also, and this isn't really a hardware thing but more of a side rant, apple needs to update the volume menu-bar item in OSX to allow quick switching of audio inputs/outputs. Yes you can download one of a couple freeware solutions to accomplish the same thing, but its kind of silly to have 2 line level outputs and a digital output and have the only OS "supplied" method of switching between them be going to the system prefs. For reference of what I'm talking about, check out the piece of software called Sound Menu.

Good stuff. I'll agree with you and add that my PC right now has the following:

1x 147GB 15K boot drive (U320 SCSI)
1x 36GB 15K swap drive (U320 SCSI)
1x 500GB SATA for non essential data and temp space
1x 500GB SATA for work
1x 500GB SATA for backup of work

I've also got my server which holds my music, videos and archives of my work.

Actually every PC I built had at least 6 bays.

If you never use more than 2 bays, I would suggest you're probably more of an imac user than a mac pro.

Here is what i have now:

Bay1 - raptor boot
Bay2 - 500GB scratch disk
Bay3 - 1TB video render and itunes disk
Bay4 - 1TB Aperture and Lightroom images catalog

Here is what I would do with 8 bays:

Bay 1/2: RAID1 OS and apps
Bay 3/4 - RAID0 scratch disk array
Bay 5 - 1TB video render
Bay 6 - 1TB aperture and lightroom images
Bay 7/8 - Raid1 Time machine volume

I could actually do with another several bays to setup my lightroom volume as RAID5...

In short, there are LOTS of uses for multiple drives bays. Yes I can do that externally with RAID arrays (which I'm doing now) but that just creates clutter and more noise and cords. I would not be that hard to add another row of 4 drive bays and as a workstation level machine I think it should have it.

And again, I find it laughable that you think 2 bays is all that is needed.

Wow. Unless somebody has a recording studio, I hope their CPU gets fried like a live shrimp for tempura.

But back onto the subject at hand....

Alright, we need a guinea pig for this. Volunteers? I would, but the machine in my signature isn't the same form factor, and already needs custom-made enclosures to fit in more HDDs. And right-angle SATA cables are a wonderful thing (had to use them EXCLUSIVELY in my SLI rig, when I had it).

If it works, Apple is forgiven... Mostly:p

I'm not sure what you all mean. You mean just plug a cable in where the drive usually goes instead of the drive? Of course that works in all models. Huh? What?

Let me clarify, I would volunteer (either offering drive brackets or using them with a RAID card in the '09 MP), but.... I have a G5. Drive brackets are completely different, ergo there is zero stuff I can do for helping people figure out how to use third-party RAID cards in the new MacPro. I guess I just got fired up... Are you saying that the '09 MacPro HDDs can be configured so they don't plug into the motherboard? So my entire flaming tangent is wrong? Well, I'm embarrassed, but also relieved...

And along the lines of putting more HDDs in the G5, I want to use a RAID array internally with three-four drives, but the G5 only has two. So, I could either pay $200 for a bracket that replaces the optical drive (which I can live without) or make my own.

Sorry, I couldn't tell what you wanted clarification on

...So, I could either pay $200 for a bracket that replaces the optical drive (which I can live without) or make my own.

Take a look at the G5 Jive. ;) You can keep the optical drive just where it is, and fit an extra 3 drives. :D

Not my idea of inexpensive, but $74.74 isn't too bad I guess, for a ready made solution.

Heh, we talked about this already Nano, had a whole thread on it :) Just waiting for the guy at the highschool to cut out the steel for the optical bay enclosure and spot weld/fold it, that's all.

I remember the thread, but I thought it was another member.

But if it's going to forever for them to get it finished (if they even started  :p), you might want to just go ahead and pick one up (or attempt a DIY yourself). :)
