I only see downsides here: it’s very asocial, it’s cumbersome, it requires additional carry-on and it lasts 1 movie. Barely.

Are we that detached from the world we can’t handle a plane flight?

This will only take off in these scenario’s when these devices become foldable. Or planes have them built-in.
well if you have a long flight people will just buy more battery packs

Sure. There will undoubtedly be people who buy this thing and several battery packs just to watch a movie on a plane.
People are weird: I just saw a video of people in the gym, walking down the street and even a guy driving his car with this thing on, not realising if it glitches he’s dead.

Think those are just impression videos only purpose

I think airlines and/or the FAA will eventually ban the use of VR devices during flights. During a flight, at any moment, situations can arise that require the attention of everyone on board. Isolating yourself from your surrounding with a VR device is counterproductive.
Oh I dunno, on a flight with a sleep mask and a pair of noise cancelling headphones I am as isolated as can be.
You'll need to shake me by the shoulder to get my attention…

Which is why I always take a window seat. No one to bother me when they need to go to the loo… I'll do the bothering. 😁

Those fabric bands are going to be pretty manky tout de suite.
Just look how Apple watch fabric bands start to go funky after frequent gym use.
Yuk.

It might just be me, but I get the impression that people who would use this on a plane aren't going to do so because it's better/easier/more convenient.

They seem like the kind of people who just want to be seen owning and using an AVP.
100% disagree. The people I know who are "road warriors" are going to use it because it gives them a much better experience working or watching something than their laptop or iPad.

If the work you are doing is at all sensitive, it's a game-changer. (I can't tell you how many times I've looked across the aisle and the person in the seat across and forward is working on something that says "Personal and Confidential" or something to that effect...)

I take you have never been on a long haul flight? plenty people sleeping, focussed on screens, noise-cancellation headphones ...

Only apple could sell a 3500 quid headset, with no protection what so ever , and sell you a bag for 200 quid.... watching videos like ijustine and MKBHD , it Is insane how elitist these people are, they truly think that a 3500 quid thing is a good price and have used the word '' ONLY '' to describe it... I mean come on. the elitism of these YouTubers is ridiculous
Did you see iJustine house ? Do you think $3500 is a problem for her ? And I’m not even sure she paid for it (probably not).

Then there will be arguments over who pays for the repair… while smoke or water fills the cabin 😬

I’d probably just climb over them 😉
The plane will go down and they'll be blissfully unaware of their impending doom because they're still immersed in the virtual environment. Apple missed listing this as a feature!

"We call it 'Ignorance Is Bliss', and we think you're gonna love it..."

I remain skeptical about adoption simply because it looks so bad.

And it's the opposite of who we naturally are. Imagine "future" airplane travel, over 80% of passengers have started to wear Vision Pro or other computer devices covering their eyes/face the entire flight. No one talks with each other, just sitting in their seat while wearing that deadweight. Vision Pro has no real vision, it's just Apple's artificial dystopian pipe dream.

Who even talks on an airplane, where you would just be disturbing the other passengers around you? It's one of reasons why noise cancelling headphones are considered standard issue on longer flights.

Who talks on an airplane?? Did you REALLY just ask that??

At some point it has to become obvious that the rationalization is extending beyond the realm of reality.
