FaceTime has never and will never be a feature of AT&T's network. It isn't a feature of A&T at all. That's what the problem is. Is Google a feature of AT&T's too? How about Pandora?

What if from here on out you couldn't get to websites brought online after this date because "they weren't there before so you aren't losing anything"? Something tells me you haven't a clue how this stuff works.

+1bazillion.

I don't care if they charge for facetime or make you get a different share plan.

AT&T already blocks the iphone from prepaid use. Verizon and at&t don't let their good phones be on prepaid. People should be more angry about this than facetime.

Also, apple will flip the switch at some point where facetime calls could just be regular calls without voice, and then AT&T loses a lot of business. This is a business move to protect themselves in the future.

how exactly will apple be able to make video streaming (data ) able to be used on a voice spectrum?

Actually, I'm glad they are charging and I hope they make a lot of money from doing so.

I never use FaceTime, nor do I envision myself needing to use it on a cellular network. So I'm not going to whine and complain about something that has no relevance. Even if that were the case, there are several other ways to video call over a cellular network, so it really is a non-issue for me.

If someone thinks they actually need to use FaceTime over cellular and can't figure out a workaround, then they deserve to pay extra; that's on them. I hope they make lots of money by doing this now so that in the future they won't try to raise my monthly fees, reduce my services, or terminate the unlimited plan. Data is data, but until they threaten to change a feature/service I actually care about, they can do whatever they want.

someone would have to be ignorant to think att "charging" for facetime is going to prevent them from raise fees, and other services in the future. The fact that they do stuff like this, throttle, charging for tether etc, and get away with it makes it that much easier for them to charge you more fees, more for services etc. every time they get away with it. regardless if it effects you or not currently.

i bet you're a joy to be around.

If the revenue is there, it would.

AT&T no longer has an iPhone monopoly in the United States. It not only competes with one major carrier, but two. And there's also the smaller carriers/MVNOs. AT&T has never had this much competition for the iPhone, so raising monthly fees is a last resort. All of these other initiatives come first.

hahahaha you're right, att will just say "hey were making enough money on the shared data plans" lets not try to maximize our profits anymore

I certainly understand why everyone is frustrated with AT&T regarding this issue but can't understand why anyone is surprised by it as it's pretty much par for the course for all wireless providers. And considering how Verizon is treating their customers (no more individual plans, no subsidized upgrades if you want to keep your grandfathered unlimited data), existing AT&T customers should be grateful this is all they're doing (for the moment ).

Personally, my wife and I will be moving our two separate individual plans into a new shared plan that will save us about $80/month and we'll now be able to tether, with FaceTime over 3G being a nice bonus.

You obviously don't understand competition.
hah
really? ATT is going to do everything they can do to maximize their profits. As much as they can get away with. Why do you think they wont raise there fees in the future if they will do this?? They will do as much as they can get away with. If people continue to let them get away with things whos to say they will stop there?? Obviously the will do stuff like this before raising the fees etc. but what differnces does that make if im being charged $10 more and its under my "fees" or $10 more a month because data costs are up. Or $10 more a month for tether etc..
you obviously dont understand the greed of them. What if they start charging for other features like netflix pandora, spotify, using youtube [inserts something you like] etc.

yeah id like to be able to use the shared plans, but it wont benefit me unfortunately. It would be nice to have my iphone and ipad on the same plan.
Currently i have a shared plan with 5 lines, all have unlimted grandfathered data, 1000 shared minutes, and a fan discount of %15. comes out to $60 a line. we have close to 20,000 roll over minutes and mobile to mobile. So really voice isnt a problem. If i switched my lines over + add my ipad, id be pay a lot more and loose my unlimited (which i really dont care about because its slow as heck after the 3gb)

I think tar and feathers are in order

Use 3G/4G and block the camera with a piece of paper and tape. It's a lot easier to do in software since you can already do this on facetime calls via wifi.

Saw a blurb today that the FCC is looking into it. Since they allow other video services(tango, skype, etc.) they can't pick and choose what video services they allow. At the glacier like pace they move at I wouldn't expect any changes anytime soon.

Just another way for ATT to stick people for more money and and not have to go to the FCC for approval.

I find FaceTime & Siri "features" that I easily ignore.

The only time they come to mind is when some egotistical user thinks he's impressing someone as he holds a very annoying conversation with Siri.

Interestingly I'm not the only one that finds Siri gimmicky, one look around in Starbucks when some idiot is using "her" and I see people rolling their eyes.

well fortunately most people i know have an iphone, and most my family does ... so i am able to use facetime. As for siri, i use her almost every day. Mainly for texting and driving, and for setting reminders. I find some things gimmicky, but interestingly there is just as many people who find it useful as you do gimmicky.. or it wouldnt exist

its kinda ironic, you talk about the only people use those features are egotistical.. yet your conversation consists of calling people dumb for not thinking the way you do haha

But is facetime really an application or a feature built into the OS? Isn't that open for interpretation?

Later AT&T. Tired of the games.

im with you, taking advantage of sprints true unlimited LTE that will be rolling out here october. Even if sprint started to throttle after a year like ATT did, it would be worth it.. and sprints call quality is insanely better than ATT.. crystal clear and no drops.

The FCC’s net neutrality rules do not regulate the availability to customers of applications that are preloaded on phones. Indeed, the rules do not require that providers make available any preloaded apps. Rather, they address whether customers are able to download apps that compete with our voice or video telephony services. AT&T does not restrict customers from downloading any such lawful applications, and there are several video chat apps available in the various app stores serving particular operating systems. (I won’t name any of them for fear that I will be accused by these same groups of discriminating in favor of those apps. But just go to your app store on your device and type “video chat.”) Therefore, there is no net neutrality violation.

yeah i agree, i need to read exactly what the net neutrality says.. Whats next youtube being blocked over 3g? my app store. skype on the window sphone 8 is stock? google hangouts on android phones is stock?

I would rather have this than lose my unlimited plan. I did use 3G unrestricter to get facetime on the network before but if I have to use wifi it's no big deal. Think about all the people losing there unlimited plans with Verizon when they buy the new iPhone.(Unless they obviously buy the phone outright)

Nobody competes with :apple::apple::apple::p

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand I think a ton of consumers would eat up their data plans by using FaceTime over a cellular connection without realizing it. And then they'd get a notification and become confused or angry. By limiting FT over wi-fi you essentially eliminate this potential problem. However at the same time I think an AT&T customer who has a single line and hence can't use a shared plan of some sort should be given the option to use FT on their data plan. Perhaps they can pay an additional $5 a month for the privilege. I really don't know. But I think not giving an option for said consumers is really messed up.

If I understand correctly, you can use Skype or other video clients to do video chats over AT&T's network. If that is correct, it appears to be an easy work around to not using FT with AT&T. Certainly Skype or another program may not be as convenient as FT but at least the option exists.
