I carry most of my stuff in a mini Jansport book bag (and sometimes not at all). At the moment:

-Keys (House key, golf cart key...you can drive a GC anywhere in the city where I live, 512 MB flash drive, library card, Mellow Mushroom pizza card, other various key chains).

There is an embarassing amount of stuff in my purse (which some have compared to handweights) so I'll just name a few things that I haven't seen much on everyone elses's list:
- Altoids Gum, listerine strips (for keeping alert at boring meetings)
- Emergency coffee debit card (must have caffeine)
- Sewing kit (taken from a nice hotel awhile back....stuffed in sanrio plastic coin case) with a few band-aids.
- Advil/Tylenol/Claritin/Tylenol Sinus (used when I forget the claritin)
- dental floss
- Nifty Sephora combination mirror and brush thing.

- Petzel headlamp (it's small and bright)
- 3x3 pad of post it notes.

I use to fit the small elph camera in my purse, but the 350xt is not elph size and no longer fits in my regular bag.

The camera's and stuff in my sig....I have a big man-bag....Its a Tamrac 692. Barely is legal size for a cary on

hmmmm... let's see...
Bag:
-Powerbook & powercord

MAC lip conditioner
Origins lip balm
Lancôme Juicy Tube (clear lip gloss)

sunglasses and sunglasses case
tons of bits of paper with things i'm supposed to remember, people's email addresses, and way too many girls' numbers (lol, I'm not bragging like you think--I'm a homo.)
Tic Tacs, usually orange.

I have a male friend who wouldn't been seen dead with a 'manbag' but when on holidays, he'll happily walk around with his camcorder case which just happens to have room for his wallet, his keys, his allergy spray etc. A guy in a store recently tried to convince me that I needed this huge camcorder case until I pointed out as a woman, it was easier for me to just buy a bigger handbag with a spare zipped pocket ;)

Anyhow, what do I carry?
Purse with some cash and lots of cards, a book, my keys, my Tube pass, my iPod, my shuffle is in there too at the moment, lots of random business cards and leaflets from the design show I was at at the weekend. A book of stamps, some earrings, mascara, eyeshadow, blusher and two lipsticks, some lip salve. A book to read, some safetypins, a bottle opener, my mobile phone, a couple of pens. That's most of the stuff I can see without a light to help me... since I'm not emptying it out over my desk!

I have a Targus Laptop Backpack..

iBook
iPod (Nano or 15gb 3G)
Ipod USB / Firewire cable
Ipod Firewire charger
iBook charger
Mighty Mouse
Nextel Phone (personal)
Verizon phone (freelance media phone)
Dell Latitude D505
Dell power adapter
1GB compact flash card (for Powershot Pro1 camera)
Compact flash card reader
Note pad
Pens
Flashlight
All Pro Screwdriver kit
Palm Pilot
Junk papers
contact lens solution
Contact case
Glasses
and usually 1 current edition of CAR Magazine.

::EDIT:: forgot my green patch cable, and red Crossover cable.

Needless to say my bag doesn't leave my sight when I am not at work, or at home. I don't even leave it locked in my car!

Probably partly because mens clothing tends to have usable pockets when women's don't and partly because women usually carry more, like make-up, tampons, handkerchief, chap-stick, ext.

I think it's nearly entirely the "usable pockets" thing. Then, since they have to carry SOME sort of bag, they gradually think of more things to put in them.

No bag, but always carry these in my pockets:

Keys
Cell Phone
Spare change
Wallet
One of a few pocket knives on a pocket clip

Carry occasionally:
1gb USB jump drive
one of 2 handguns

Here's what I am usually supposed to take with me every morning:
- Keys
- Wallet
- Work Security Pass
- Cellphone
- Change for my morning expresso.

Here's what I usually end up with at work:
- Guitar pick
- Used gum

I need a new brain.

left pants pocket: money clip with bills, ID, debit card
right pants pocket: Palm T3
shirt pocket: pen, iPod
belt: cell

If it's sunny, I'll bring my case with my prescription sunglasses (hate hate hate clip-on lenses), which I'll have to carry along with my key ring.

If I don't have a shirt pocket, or am wearing shorts without pockets, I am SOL unless my wife has room in her bag for my gear. Haven't found (or looked for, ftm) a "manpurse" I can stomach, and my backpack is too dang much to haul unless I'm bringing my PB or camera with me. I suppose I could pick up a smaller backpack or a messenger style bag, but I haven't bothered yet.

I'll play... I've got a laptop/messenger bag-type thing, which contains...

iBook (in sleeve)
Bluetooth dongle
A4 2005/06 Diary (day to page)
Three small spiral-bound notebooks (two lined, one plain)
Black ink cartridges for my fountain pen
Spare FireWire cable (for linking my iPod up to my Mac at work)
iPod
Old mobile
Glucose sweets
Water bill (must pay that...)
Grey woolen hat

It is quite a large bag... :p

Heck, I'll play this, just to be different.

Its kinda like one of those 'fanny pack' things...I think.

In it is:

syringes
oxytetracycline
penicillin
knife
calf book/pen
GPS
matches
TP
flashlight

Before you jump to conclusions, I am a rancher.

Jansport backpack that has:
iPod
mobile
wallet
Oyster card
keys (home & work)
a s***load of pens, usually nicked from work
matches & a spare lighter
spare pack of fags (disgusting habit I know)
bottle of water
newspaper (either that days Standard or remnants of the Sunday Times if I haven't read it)
a book
a mini maglite
USB key
a load of receipts that I haven't gotten around to shredding
about £20 in shrapnel
I really need to be tidier :p

OK, I'm a creature of habit..
Every morning, I put $$ in my front left pocket, cell phones in the right front pocket, wallet in the right back pocket, and keys in the left back pocket (these get taken out before I sit @ the office). In the Laptop bag, I have my Powerbook, Handspring PDA, check book, 1 CD-RW, two floppy disks (you never know when it comes in handy), and a TechTool CD for troubleshooting PB problems (I've never had to use it, in almost 4 years of using my PB). In the outside pocket of my bag, is my PSP, iPod, a asortment of power, USB, and network cables, and a couple of pens. I never leave home with out my "pocket" stuff, and my laptop is with me %99 of the time..

God- I have 2 bags I carry around every day.

1. My gym bag, with my smelly gym clothes and shoes. :)
2. My laptop bag- iBook, power supply, iPod, checkbook, firewire cable, zip drive and bills to be paid.

Somebody needs to make a combo of these two bags that doesn't look like a suitcase. I'd buy it right away.

Ya, women bring more things than man so they have handbags. It's also part of our fashion. If you notice, our bags usually match the clothes we wear...
