I was thinking the same thing, could the iPod still get announced tomorrow? However, after thinking about it for a bit there is no way they would release the iPod so soon after this. The splash page is the bigest advertisment online so I couldn't see them taking down the Xserver stuff after just one day.

Now if the only revision is capicity and they don't deem it a huge revision I guess they could stick a green sticker on the iPod in the online store and put a mini advertisment under the Xserver junk.

Mike

P.S. I wish it was iPod day :(

I think we could see an iPod update tomorrow....

Apple always releases new stuff on tuesdays, so why didn't they release the xserve tomorrow? Maybe because that's when they'll update the iPods??
This is of course just speculation.

mmmm, i wouldn't be hopeful of iPod update tomorrow.

i say more software this week

and next week ibook/14.4" powerbook or iPod

apple seems to be strategizing releases all quarter to keep media payingg attention, it would be a waste to do two new one's in a week

the new Xraid is pretty impressive. it should get decent coverage

I wouldn't be suprised if the iPod is released this week with a commercial for Valentines day. Give one to your sweatheart or something like that.

I had my hopes up (again) for an iPod update this week, but the XServe really threw me for a loop, and on a Monday. That's different.

I don't know, I'm now leaning towards thinking that it's not going to happen after all. Two producs in one week, seems unlikley. Though I just did pay my MasterCard off and I've got it sitting ready to go just incase! :)

The string of products Apple has released in such a short time span, all since MacWorld has really surprised me. Hey, I would LOVE if Apple would release a new product every week of the year! They just can't keep this up, throwing everything out in the 1st quarter or they'll be dry by December.

But I did have a question for anyone out there... We've heard several reports of people who ordered iPods from Apple weeks ago and have had their ship dates pushed back. I was woundering if anyone out there has received their iPod or has been pushed back by Apple. To me it seems that there's a shortage of iPods out there.

Here's to hoping on Tuesday...

They have done Monday announcements before. Could this have been a response to Sun having a major product announcement today. (Sun had advertised the announcement last week.)

I'm sure Apple can do a couple of Announcements a month with a six month cycle on updating a particular product. Although I can see Apple shortening update cycles if processor upgrades come out frequently enough.

No ibook then, ah well stay tuned for next weeks update.

You think an iBook update is coming? No way. It'll be at least April before the iBook's are updated.

What can they add? They don't want the G3 iBook to surpass the 12" G4 PowerBook. I think the next iBook upgrade will be a total redesign.

There's still hope for an iPod update tomorrow.

As Bear said, Sun had a major product announcement today, and also it may be relevant that today is Monday, the start of a business week. I'm thinking they don't sell XServe in the Apple Stores, but they do sell consumer products such as iPods, obviously. That in mind, shipping is business days, no? They don't need to ship the XServe, so they can announce it Monday, but they need to ship the iPods Monday, a business day.

Of course, I know nothing and I'm grasping at straws.

Retailers have been saying for a while though that there are no backorders on 5 gig iPods.

yeah, that's not such a bad point bear. the xserve will not ship until march.

they want ipods to be in stores...

just my opinion, but if they did i think apple would keep xserve on the frontpage. therefore suggesting very minor updates to ipods.

Well, I'll grasp at straws with you all!

Apple has been known to rotate their front page, one time you load it it's the XServe and the iPod is on one of the smaller boxes. Then the next time the iPod is big and the XServe is small. In fact they use to do that all the time, seems they've gotten away from that lately.

Well, I guess we'll know in about 15 hours...

I agree, I think that maybe they released xserve on Monday so that they could release the ipods tomorrow.

I REALLY hope we see updates soon.

I don't expect to see many feature upgrades, I hope Apple focuses on fixing some of the problems with the current model such as the battery life issue.

My predictions:
- Price Drops
- Larger HD sizes
- Firmware update (ACC?)

I hope:
- Mic. in
- User Replaceable battery
- Bluetooth/Airport support of some type
- FM tuner

I'll just keep my fingers crossed, anyone think this is going to be happening tomorrow?

Well, the latest trend for keeping Apple in the press and involving updates seems to be usually within the timespan of 1-2 weeks.

I'm ready to cough up the cash for a new iPod too, but only if I can be assured that it won't die on me within 6 months and be hampered by battery problems.

True. This morning began with the usual ritual of checking Apple's website first thing (and finding out about XServe/Raid); the next thing I did was a REFRESH of the homepage... and another and another... finally decided that no other announcements were in the pipeline. I, too, was hoping for an IPOD announcement.

Maybe tomorrow... I think it is a great way to showcase two Big product announcements at once. Depending on who you are, you'll be drawn by one or the other... or both!

ipod update

Sun announced an overhaul of their server line today, so apple announcing xserve updates on a monday isn't odd.

I've heard the problem affects all lines but keep in mind that not everyone has this problem. Personally, I think it's a design flaw/firmware issue. Unlike a computer, your iPod never really does turn off it just goes into sleep mode. This is why you get the "instant on" with the iPod. There's also no backup battery in the iPod so things like the clock feature take up your main battery.

This is why if you leave your iPod unused for a few weeks you'll find that your battery is dead.

Anyway, there is a ton of information on this subject over at the Apple iPod disucussion boards.

Are these really rumors?

Or are people just assuming that Apple will release new iPods directly on the heels of the release of larger Toshiba drives?

It seems to me that these rumors are built of nothing more than wishful thinking. And, you've all wrapped yourselves into a frenzy waiting for new iPods. Hey, I've been there! But, my guess is that we won't see new iPods for a while yet.

My take is that Apple needs to refresh the line, with something more than a storage bump. And, to do so, they'll need some lead time to work with new enclosures and features, following the release of larger drives. So, I don't expect to see anything in the next couple of weeks.

But, since I base my analysis on nothing more than the rest of you do, I could be wrong as well...:D

I dissagree.

I think they've been working on, for all intents and purposes, "IPOD 2" for a long while now. Your statement makes it seem like the next big revision isn't on the drawing board yet.

For all we know the makers of these super small drives have had 40GB drives ever since Apple first released the 5GB version. Why show your technology hand? These makers probably have a lot bigger than that and just are letting these 5, 10 and 20GB drives lose their momentum on their own. Ask yourself... if you were a potential IPOD buyer and KNEW for certain that an 80GB version loomed early next year, would you REALLY buy a 20GB (or even a 40GB) version right now? NO... you'd wait. These makers know this and hold their technology very close.

You can bet, though, that Apple knows for certain about all of their suppliers' technology and have signed all kinds of NON-DISCLOSURE contracts so that they'll be able to work on an IPOD 2 (let's say) all the while, knowing that the supplier isn't EVEN planning on releasing them en masse any time soon.

There is a really intersting article over at macwhispers where they talk about part suppliers. The article basically says no new parts are in the pipeline to build a new DLD en masse.

I am fine with that, I never really wanted a coulour screen or FireWire 800. I just hope the new hard drives find their way to the iPod soon, along with a price drop, and maybe a firmware upgrades to run .aac is that too much to ask?

I wonder the same thing though, are those new hard drives going to make it into the iPod before they are sold for a while? Hmm I sure hope so!

Mike

P.S. Those screens Apple purchased from Kodak, are they being used for anything currently? A lot of time has passed and I haven't heard much about them in a while.

There's been no word on who purchaced the screens from Kodak, it could be Apple, could be Sony, who knows?

Oh, I agree that Apple and Toshiba are in discussion long before a product is released as to what is in the pipeline. My only point is that it is ridiculous to think that new iPods will be released within 1 week of the release of the drives. History already has shown us that Apple didn't release new iPods as soon as the 20 gig drives were released...as I recall, it took another 2-3 months before we saw them.

We just have groups of people here waiting for the immediate release of new iPods. I think it will be a couple of months; that is, unless somebody in the know has some specific information. From what I've seen, this entire thread is built solely on the release of new drives from Toshiba.

All I'm saying is that if you are getting up at 6 am to check the Apple site every day, you may want to relax a bit. :D

I think that the pretty much complete lack of 5gb availability and word from folks of limited 10gb availability (I read one some board, maybe this one, that someone has run into a supplier that is actually completely out of 10 gb, not just low on them), we'd all hope that something is happening soon. If I knew that there weren't going to be new ipods released for many months, I'd probably go ahead and buy a 5gb ipod right now. But I can't. Maybe they'll replenish. But if the anecdotes of shortages of the 10gb size are accurate also, you've gotta wonder what's happening over there at Apple. They have customers who can't consume! Either it's really bad strategy and planning on their part, or they are letting the supplies dwindle because they are replacing them with new products. I want to hope it's the second, if only because I want to have a bit of faith in the company. But who knows. :(

That's because the 20gig hard drive is bigger than the 5gig hard drive therefore couldn't fit into the same enclosure. So Apple had to redesign a new case. As for the new 40gig hard drive it as big as the old 20 gig, dimension wise, and the new 20gig is as big as the old 5 gig.
