Oh, I agree that Apple and Toshiba are in discussion long before a product is released as to what is in the pipeline. My only point is that it is ridiculous to think that new iPods will be released within 1 week of the release of the drives. History already has shown us that Apple didn't release new iPods as soon as the 20 gig drives were released...as I recall, it took another 2-3 months before we saw them.

We just have groups of people here waiting for the immediate release of new iPods. I think it will be a couple of months; that is, unless somebody in the know has some specific information. From what I've seen, this entire thread is built solely on the release of new drives from Toshiba.

All I'm saying is that if you are getting up at 6 am to check the Apple site every day, you may want to relax a bit. :D

Points:

- Low iPod supply, both 5 and 10 gig. (Esp. 5)

- There are updates a plenty around now

- iPod is "due" for an update

- Toshiba drive information. Drives would fit into current casing, I think.

Personally, I'm getting annoyed. I wanted a 5 gig at the start of January, and could not get a hold of one. The stores are just saying they have no back order date.

This "spontaneous" release of the Xserve is going to keep people checking every day, since now it's not only Tuesdays. :p

Situation of iPods in Spain

I live in Spain, and wanted to wait after the holidays to get a 10 GB iPod, so I waited a couple of weeks.
I thought: "Maybe they lower the price, but, what the heck... I've been saving money for a year now and I deserve the thing!"

So I call the Apple Store, which I didn't know was attended from the States. BTW, awful service they have, with an internet-to-phone system that is only half duplex, and we both couldn't talk at the same time. And they tell me the estimated delivery time is 4 to 6 weeks!!! The next day I cancelled my order, and turned to other resellers in Spain. 4 to 6 weeks! That's not even remotely a reasonable time...
... But what happened when I tried to buy my iPod thru other spanish dealers? No luck. All of them (and I had a look at 5 or 6 of the major ones) have a backorder time of about a month or don't even know the estimated shipping time. And this has been this way for a month now.

Either Apple has something coming, or they made an afwul mistake with iPod supplies. So my first experience getting an Apple gadget has been really frustrating. I just hope they release the new batch soon, because, come on, it's not normal to have customers wait such a looong time for an item, and keeping that situation for over a month. :)

... I just hope that, if they release it, the shipping gets swifter than this 4 to 6 weeks crippled-turtle-speed.
(Making fists with my fingers now)

Angel.

roughly how long does it take for a shipment of ipods to get from the factory to the suppliers and the shops? How can it take over a month and a half to get 5gb supplies to the consumer. Why do apple continue to have the note about holiday demand on their website. Its quite obvious that it is bs and they could be loosing customers by delaying the release of updates. Most people who have apple computers or know the quality of the ipod will wait, but there could be many people who look at the waiting time and choose to buy a different player, if apple wants to loose customers then they are going about it in the right way, i have been waiting since november for an ipod update and i'm getting very annoyed.

I seem to remember a way of converting a pc ipod to work on apples. Can anyone point me in that direction? I know where to get a pc 10gb but they don't have any apple ones :(

I agree with you for the most part but...

Those of us who are always watching Apple for updates and snooping around the rumor sites, taking the smallest rumor and running amuck with it are obviousley loyal Apple customers already. Apple dosn't have to worry about loosing me to the evil empire and I would imagiane that htey don't have to worry about most of the people on this board either. We all complain about not having our updates, but we'll continue to be loyal to the company.

However, I agree with you compleatley to the point that many people who don't know or even care about iPod updates and just want an iPod and want it now are having troulbe getting the product in their hands. Now that is a big problem for Apple.

The demand for the 5GB iPod is probably the greatest of all for the entry level consumer or the person who doesn't have a ton of money to throw into an MP3 player. By keeping the 5GB unavailable Apple is really hurting their sales base. They need to either start putting some 5's back into production or go ahead and drop the prices on the rest of the line. We've got the demand, but there's no supply and that's a horriable position for a company to be in.

On an unrelated subject...wasn't there a rumor about iTunes 4 coming out in April? I think I saw that on one of the rumor sites, maybe this one. Seems to me that would be the perfect opportunity to launch the new iPods with new features. If Apple was really close to an iTunes update they would have updated it with iLife, so we're still probably at least a month or so away.

Hi,

I have been looking at getting a 10 gig iPod, i went to many of the large stores around my area (mac station, london drugs etc.) Every store was completely sold out, the guy at london drugs checked the database to see if they had any in stock at one of the 50 other locations and they had a total of 8, he said they normally ever see somthing like this if they are changing a product, the product is defective or they are discontinuing the line.

Mac station pretty much told me the same thing, they have been sold out (of all iPods) since before christmas and the order they sent in around then hasn't arrived yet.

They better release these soon beause there are people out there waiting!!

Apple Store

I had an order from the Apple Store arrive yesterday.

It is an existing model.

As much as I hope for an update soon (so this beauty can go back) I don't think it's going to happen.

HAHA that's just because you just bought one! Then you don't want them to release a new one...

WHY don't you think they'll update soon???

Replacing iPods?

What's Apple's policy about replacing a recently bought item with a new version of it?

I mean, if you buy an iPod today, and in a week or so (hehe) Apple releases a new version of it...

1. ... does Apple replace the one you have with the new one?
2. Do you have to pay an additional fee?
3. If that is so, would it apply to every country where Apple sells their products?
4. Is there a time limit to replace the item?

Thanks,

Angel.

I DO want an update now. The sooner the better because it means I can return this one and get a new one or if it's not soon I will give my 20GB one to my daughter and get the best of the new ones.

I don't think one is coming now because I've received my order. It was out of stock for a long time and now it's in stock indicating that they had supply problems.

The new Toshiba Hard Drives are going to be a little while in getting into the ipod.

If they had the new iPods already then I think they would have pumped those out rather than keep saying the 5GB is OOS due to Holiday demand and preventing people from buying them cos everywhere is OOS.

They are running a promo for Valentines day for iPODs. Big trouble if they bring out new ones just after this promo.

As with most things bought on the internet, you have the right to return the product for whatever reason within an agreed timescale. This is due in part to the various Distance Selling Acts that are in force i.e. you get protection for buying something you have been unable to see and therefore do not know if it is fit for the purpose you bought it.

With Apple this is 10 working days from receipt of the goods I believe. With some other retailers it is more www.johnlewis.com (UK Company) is 28 days.

Some Credit Card Companies offer this protection also. I believe that if you pay with a Barclaycard for instance, you get an extra 60 days price promise protection whereby, they will refund the difference if a price drop occurs.

As I am in the UK and you are in Spain then mi amigo, I think you should be covered by the same sort of rules that we are. You lot being civilised since joining the EU and all that.

Best thing is always to check the website or ask the Operator at time of purchase.

Hope this helps and if any of it is incorrect I'm sure someone will tell me.

all the stores around me have been sold out since before christmas.. maybe you just got one of the last old ones in stock?

Apple Store

Sorry I should have clarified...

I bought from the UK Apple Store Online as we do not have ant Retail Stores over here.

(yet!)

For whatever it's worth....Tuesday

I've been following these rumors for a couple of weeks as I'm sitting on some cash for a 20GB model. Tired of waiting and anxious for more specific info, I called a local Apple store and asked if they had and 20GB iPods. When he said they "might have one" I pretended that the announcement was public knowledge and said "Is that one of the new ones, or are they still not out?" He got all nervous and stuttered a lot. I backed off and said "OK...So when should I call back?" He said, with a tone that sounded like a wink and a nod, "Tuesday."

I tried the same thing at the local COMPUSA and they confirmed that a 40GB model was coming soon, but they did not know when.

So Tuesday is the day. If you've got time, try the same trick at your local store and see what happens....

Aww...you made the poor guy nervous!

Seroiusley though, do the Apple Store employees have any prior knowledge about product releases? I'm sure the higher ups do but not your average Joe Salesman, if they did it would be Impossiable to keep a lid on things. R&D is under strict orders not to inform the sales staff until they have to because the average salesman will make a slipup just like that and tell the world.

Do they know?

In many cases they do know. I know a former owner of an Apple reseller. He had to fire a guy for slipping up -- per Apple. In some cases, they know because they need to. In other cases, they know because their Apple contacts like to gossip. In any case, Cupertino takes secrecy in the channel very, very seriously. Which is why the poor guy was nervous when I confidently addressed the rumor as if I knew something -- he knew I'd taken him someplace he shouldn't go, but he didn't know how to handle it. The whole thing was really awkward...poor guy. ;-)

I tried the aforementioned strategy with both IL apple stores. Either they are well trained or had no idea what I was talking about, because both seemed baffled at the idea of a thinner 20 GB model being available. "Umm... this is the same 20 GB model we've had since I've worked here".

I'd like to believe the salesperson James had tipped him off, but maybe he was reading a little too much into it??? What would account for one store knowing about a Tuesday release, and another store having no idea?

Try this

Who's next?

I've been known to speculate, but I read people well. I stand by my take.

As far as why one would know more than the other: I may have been speaking with a manager or something... who knows.

I'll tell you this: I've got way too much time on my hands. ;-) Thanks for the attempt spimp.

Who's next? Got any New York posters?

ipods

does anyone really want a 40 gig ipod? im sure you could find uses for it but as of yet i have not met anyone who needs that much space.

Right now I only have about 3GB of Music in iTunes but if the price was right, can see buying a 40 gigger for backup of my Hard Drive.

Though, I'd have to be able to load Jaguar on it and use the iPod as a bootable drive. Currentley you can only load 10.1.3 on the iPod, won't support anything higher. Take my iPod and boot up in Target disk mode from another mac.

I'm debating right now between the 10 and the 20, will wait and see what happens if/when the new models come out.

For what it's worth...

I just called my two local seattle mac shops and they both have 5 gig ipods in stock, and 1 had 10 gigs in stock, while the other said they have some 10 gigs on order.

I also note that Apple's web site lists 1-2 day shipping for 10 gig iPods.
