What's next? OS 10.6 or OS XI?

You see that's just not cool! You can't just change it all the sudden. It started with cats were going to finish it with cats.
 
I don't really know why you guys think Apple will ever replace the core of Mac OS X. I mean what would they replace it with? When Apple was using the classic Mac OS you could see that there were better options out there and that the hardware just needed to catch up to be able to run those better options. Apple might very well move to OS 11 but that doesn't mean the OS would be completely new as it would just be a marketing decision as it was to continue using OS X. When the classic Mac OS moved from OS 8 to OS 9 it was still the same core operating system with just added features. They even just started using OS X in the iPhone, Touch, and AppleTV so why would they ever replace it unless there was something out there which was so much better which there isn't. The engineering requied to build a completely new operating system is tremendous and the only reason Apple did it with OS X was because they had to and a lot of work was already put into it from NextStep and with the help of opensource. My opinion is Apple will continue to improve OS X with features like ZFS and they might even call it OS 11 but it will still be the same core OS that NextStep was and OS X is.
 
PowerBlue I don't think the topic of the thread is that OS X will be removed and replaced with some new OS concept. With threads like this it's usually the naming scheme that is the topic.

But aside from that, you are right, OS X may one day go to OS 11 but I wouldn't expect to see the desktop/Finder approach go bye-bye. It'll just continue to evolve. At this point there will have to be a revolution in hardware (i.e. 3D displays) before we see the GUI as we know it begin to radically change. It just wouldn't be a smart move IMO to move away from the Desktop approach that the whole Software industry is built-on.

I understand that but a few people seem to think that OS 11 has to be a completely new operating system and that Apple will one day move away from the core of OS X which I don't think is the case. Maybe they are just thinking about the interface and not the internals which is causing the confusion.
 
Hmm.., I've gotta vote against OSX Cougar, simply because that could mean the same thing as OSX Panther - and that'd be just plain strange. Technically, the names: Panther, Cougar, Puma, Mountain Lion, etc. are all often used to refer to Puma concolor. Sure Panther can refer to other big cats as well, but bringing cougar into the mix would be rather untidy.

Strange, but not unprecedented, as not so long ago Ford was marketing the Cougar and Puma at the same time, albeit in different markets.

I do quite like Lynx, however that's far too similar to Linux...

I don't think Apple will move away from a Unix-based OS anytime soon. But I also think they'll keep the name OS X since the "X" seems to be connected to the UniX it's built on. It's like asking when Microsoft will use a name other than Windows for the next Windows. As long as the Mac OS is Unix-based, I imagine it'll be called OS X. And I think it'll be Unix-based for a long time to come.

This is pure coincidence, and kind of a stretch at that. Anything related to UNIX has never had any nomenclature referring to the 'X' in its name (i.e. Linux). The 'X' is for the roman numeral 10. OS XI will come to fruition one day and it'll still likely be UNIX based.

I know X is technically a roman numeral referring to 10. But it's coincidence that I think was very convenient for Apple, and that they play up sometimes. I'm not sure what you mean about other OS's relating to Unix because the example you gave--Linux--does end in an X. I'm just saying that OS X has become a very good name for Apple, and one associated with its respected, Unix-based roots, and I think it would be a mistake to move away from that. Maybe one day OS XI will come into fruition, but I think it's more likely we'll see many more versions of OS X for a while. And like I said, it's very possible I'm wrong. Just my opinion.

they could go on like this forever: Planets, Greek Gods, Fish, etc

surprised in a way that Apple haven't branded loads of future OS names
