I think we're destined for another 10x release.

Leopard is heralded as revolutionary, but, in reality, it's just a refresher graphically, with a number of new features.

If they decide to totally revamp it, we may be getting XI. It is unlikely they'd dump UNIX, though.

Why the obsession with version numbers? They mean nothing. If the UNIX base of the current MacOS is fine then let them keep updating it every few years. As long as it is based on the the UNIX core they should keep calling it OS X. I consider Leopard to be MacOS X version 6 (they started counting at 0 remember) and they can continue like this for decades. I fully expect to see the versions get into double figures.

I just hope they don't decided to start applying years to it like they have with iLife and iWork. MacOS X 2010. Hmmmm. No. Only an idiot would name their product with a year......

Some people seem to be under the impression that moving to OS 11 requires a complete change in the OS architecture. Why?

While OS X has a nice ring to it do you think Apple will really release OS 10.11, 10.12, 10.13... etc? I guess could if they really wanted to milk the OS X name but at some point they'll release OS 11 and it doesn't mean it'll be a complete overhaul.

I've heard this from a few people, and while it's certainly possible, it's illogical. OS X could have been called OS 10, but it wasn't. Technically the X is just a roman numeral 10, but it's more than that. They chose OS X over OS 10 to call attention to the major overhaul that the Mac OS was getting and the switch to a Unix kernel. Certainly it's possible that Apple will release an OS 11 or an OS XI instead of an OS 10.12, 10.13, etc. But that just doesn't make as much sense, because changing the X to XI (or the 10 to 11) would signify a major change.

Certainly, they could give the OS a major overhaul while keeping the Unix base (like completely changing the UI or something) and then call it OS XI, but it would still probably require a major overhaul to move away from the "OS X _______" nomenclature. As I said before, it's like wondering if Microsoft's next operating system will be called something other than Windows ________.

What makes more sense is that Apple will continue to play up the code names (the big cat names) for the future operating systems and playing down the actual version number. Notice how in the media it's always called "Leopard" or "OS X Leopard." Apple themselves rarely call it "OS 10.5."

It's certainly possible I'm completely wrong, as some people seem to think. However, the suggestion that Apple will release OS XI without at least some kind of major overhaul (even if it's still Unix-based) is silly. I can think of no other good reason to call it anything other than OS X. Perhaps there is another reason, but no ones suggested one. Staying with "OS X" until another major change is just more logical. If they do change (which they might--not saying it's impossible, just illogical) then it's out of SJ's pure whim.

I don't think the analogy is necessarily valid. Microsoft's operating system is called "Windows" while Apples operating system is called "Mac OS" (not OS X). Technically, OS X is a version of Mac OS just like XP being a version of Windows, so OS X wouldn't be equatable to Windows. It's true however that the six OS X releases are more akin to the Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP and Vista, than OS X is to just one version of Windows and it's service packs.

On the other hand, Apple could instead brand their operating system under the current architecture as "Mac OS X" in which case it would be equatable to Windows and the OS X name would live until a major revision in the architecture. I think that'll probably be the better choice. I like the name.

now that apple has used a "Space" theme with their OS (in time machine), maybe zodiac signs would be pretty sweet. i mean just look at the leopard box, they would be like bread and butter.

"Mac OS X Aries" (11.1)
"Mac OS X Taurus" (11.2)....
and then finnish with "Mac OS X Pisces" (11.12)

I really wouldn't be surprised to see it go as far as OS 10.11 myself, OS 10 just has a ring to it that OS 11 doesn't.
However we won't know until it happens really and there's still plenty of cats left.

Yeah, but "OS X Capricorn" and "OS X Sagittarius" just don't roll off the tongue quite as nicely, now do they? ;)

Also, how come Finland is the only country to receive a special (in their case "Finnish") version of OS X when Pisces is released? :p

OS X 10.6: Flea-ridden Smelly Stray Cat Digging in the Trash in the Alley Outside my Window Pissing Me Off at Two in the Morning.

What, too long? Print the box with a really small font, Steve...

On a related note, will a donation to the ASPCA or Humane Society balance out any bad Karma I accumulate from throwing something at this annoying stray?

OS XI sounds weird...

but then again, i thought the macbook air was a stupid name, and never thought they'd actually call it that.

"Mac OS X Cancer" doesn't really sound very good. Marketing nightmare.

most likely, apple will release os 11 or xi, watever theyll call it when os x is the dominant os, and it will be available on all computers today (dells, hps, toshibas, acers, etc). at the rate its going, and if Windows 7 turn into another Vista, we could see this happening in probably 5-10 years.

they could name os 11 after pokemon! that would keep them set for atleast another 400+ operating systems!

OS 11.0: Bulbasaur
OS 11.0.1: Ivysaur
OS 11.0.2: Venusaur
OS 11.1: Charmander
OS 11.1.1: Charmelon
OS 11.1.2: Charizard
OS 11.2: Squirtle
OS 11.2.1: Wartortle
OS 11.2.2: Blastoise

that's all they need to do! release 2 big updates for each version, kinda like service packs, then go onto the next one.

OS 132.6.1: Deoxys
releases in 2552 just in time for Master Chief to use it to hack the Cortona for his own needs. ;)

honestly i havent played pokemon since the ruby/sapphire days when i wuz ten i just remember alot of the names.

I've heard that Apple hides a clue in it's OS's as to what the next version. 10.3 had an image of a tiger, 10.4 had an image of a leopard in it. AFAIK, no one has found an image of a big cat in 10.5. But on AppleInsider, one member discovered a weird image.

It was a Zebra.

Mac OS X Zebra? Or is Apple moving to a totally new platform, named after wild African animals? Who knows.....

Apple trademark OS 11

I thought it was common knowledge that Leopard was the final phase in the OS X legacy, after 6 versions. Apple has trademarked the following, and is also common knowledge, so i thought:
OS 11.0, "Polar"
OS 11.1, "Grizzly"
OS 11.2, "Panda"
OS 11.3, "Kodiak"
OS 11.4, "Sloth"
OS 11.5, "Sun"

Mac will be returning to the numbered system apparently around the 2010 mark. my guess, macworld 2010. new decade, new technologies, new os
