This afternoon I had to stop at the local gas station for a couple things, and the bill came to $10.71. I gave her a ten, a dollar, and a penny.
She slowly placed the money into the register, and then stared at the display, a long time; I try to be patient with these kids.
Somewhere, in the distance, a dog barked.
Finally, she gave me my change. A five, two ones, two quarters and two dimes... wtff. I said, "No, I gave you a ten, and... " And she said, "Oh, wait, let me..." Her supervisor came over, she called up the Calculator on her iPhone, and she started plugging away. I told her she only owed me $0.30, which I finally got.
Im thinking she might have had a learning disability like dyscalculia which would make this task impossible for her.

I found a spare monitor DVI monitor that I could use with my Power Mac G5, but I need an ADC/DVI adapter now, and I've already spent so much on this setup in the past two months as it is.

I am one who is somewhat mathematically challenged......I can do math, but it usually takes me a little longer than it probably does most people. It's not for lack of intelligence; when we were having math lessons in school, a lot of times I would slip a book under my desk and read it instead of paying attention to the lesson!! Somehow I never got caught. Ehhh...so years later I am still paying the price for that.

At the dinner table our family usually engaged in conversation about our day and all that sort of thing; we occasionally discussed historical events happening or something which had happened in history but somehow math never came up. My father was definitely better at it than either my mother or me but he was very busy all day at work and I think just wanted to relax when he was at home in the evenings with us.

Thank goodness for calculators, as they help me get the necessary calculations done much more quickly than I could do on my own!

Didn't see this post earlier... is the keyboard in this video smaller than your Yamaha?

Yes, it is. My Yamaha CP88 is a full-size keyboard. It’s a wonderful board but I’m not willing to lug it around constantly, especially since I don’t have a car up in Wisconsin.

I ended up picking up a used Yamaha MX61 locally. It’s got great sounds, including some great synths.

My how much my life has changed. As I was sorting my Safari Bookmarks, which I haven't done in years, all those website that I use to frequent multiple times a day are no longer live. From 1984 through today... "melancholy" feeling going on here... After cleaning it out, I decided to keep just 6 bookmarks. Most for just old times sake. Applefritter, Mac OS X Easter Eggs, Macintosh Garden, Macupdate, Internet Archive Macintosh Software Library. Macrumors is now my only daily Mac News site I visit...

It's like when I go through my bookshelf and see all of those books I read when a tad younger that are now just too simplistic, bombastic, cliche-ridden, chauvinistic or just outright racist (Biggles, are you listening???).

Folks, I made a mistake on a previous post here, and got (rightfully) banninated for a couple days. My apologies to everyone.

A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck the Kamchatka Peninsula. Tsunami warnings were issued in the US, China, Chile, Canada, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Malaysia. A nuclear power plant was evacuated in Japan. A state of emergency was declared in Hawaii.

Latest reports of small tsunamis of 30 and 40 centimetres along the Japanese coast. The biggest one was on the Kamchatka Peninsula, big enough to shift some smaller buildings. So far, no reports of injury or death.

It's less powerful than the 2023 earthquakes that struck our country. It may have lasted seven minutes, but it was 200 km underground. The first one we had was a 7.9 magnitude, the second a 7.6 magnitude; both occurred less than 20 kilometers away. Meanwhile, if this earthquake had occurred in our country, there would have been at least half a million deaths, 3 million injuries, and 4 destroyed cities.
I survived the earthquake in our country with injuries. The building didn't collapse on me, but a piece of plaster fell on my left shoulder 😅

My students have half of "Funkytown" learned. I'm impressed, they learned very quickly. I have two trumpet players so I wrote out harmony parts fully-notated for them (they're used to reading in concert band). Last week of summer sessions, hope to come back next year. This is a lot of fun! Takes a lot of physical and mental energy--waving my arms around and jumping in the air (I am an energetic conductor lol), but totally worth it. So glad this worked out this year (I had multiple options on my plate, so glad I chose this).

Sounds fulfilling, interesting, stimulating, challenging, enjoyable, and ultimately, rather rewarding.

Well, I am guessing time to upgrade is soon, I haven't been able to upgrade Office as my MacOS version (Monterey) is no longer supported by MS. I can still use it but prefer using my work laptop (Win 11) for work. Just now wanted to play World of Tanksonly to find out Mac Intel is o longer supported. Not that gaming is so important for me but it's another sign from the heavens (the cloud, the force etc.) that I should really upgrade soon.

I should head outside, it's the Swiss national holiday today so here are some versiosn of the Swiss national anthem. A bit warm for raclette or fondue, but some grilled meat and some Swiss white wine will be welcome. I'll head out to the parks and festivities and see what is up.

Here are some renditions of the national anthem.

I love the heat, the warmth of high summer in northern Europe.
I love the heat and summer too, but here we are...already in August. It just doesn't last long enough and time moves so quickly (I know I sound like an old woman and that's because I am. :D ) Autumn used to be my favorite time of year, but as I've gotten older I don't enjoy it as much because I know winter is going to follow it and I dread winter.

Agreed.

I loathe, detest, abominate, winter, and that has been the case ever since I was a child.

However, I love, adore, delight in, spring, and glory in the warmth and heat of summer.

Early autumn is okay, but today - even though the calendar informs us that we have entered August, - that warm, still, heat - the kind that means you can stroll around in short sleeves (even though it is overcast), and sit at a keyboard (or, read a book), clad in summer attire, is something that I thrill to.

As I shall have a car at my disposal tomorrow morning, I plan to head into the farmers' market.

Thus, earlier, today, I made a few phone calls to reserve some stuff (free range organic eggs, for example, from a vendor who has their own hens, and which tend to run out early precisely because they are so good).

Had an amazing last week teaching summer rock classes, it was so much fun! This week, we had two trumpets and a vocalist so I got to put my arranging skills to work. Basically like writing for three horns (even though the third one was a singer in this case). Also, got the nicest complement from one of my students, who said I was his favorite instructor he's had all summer. That made my day and my week!

Both of my parents birthdays this week.
Happy birthday to the pair of them.
On my mind is how many more they will have.
Well, yes, but I would argue to enjoy them - to the extent that you can - while they are still with you.

On your mind should be a phone call to them, and a chat (however brief) to wish them well.
Also how many more times I’ll see them is on my mind.
Then - and I write as someone who would give anything to be able to go to a play with my mum, a classical concert with my dad, a glass of wine and deep chat with them both - try to make the time to make some plans to see them (again, howsoever fleetingly).

I saw my mum last week. I’ve not seen my Dad yet this year. But it’s not me finding the time that’s the issue I’m afraid. My family is a lot more complicated than yours was I feel.

Fair enough.

When things are pretty good in a family, there is little better in life; however, when they are not, there are few difficulties and troubles that can match it for misery, stress and unhappiness.
