It's 44 degrees Celsius today, or 112 degrees Fahrenheit.

I'll be leaving work later. My LG 12,000 BTU air conditioner isn't working, and I'm drenched in sweat. The air conditioner is broken anyway. Place a bowl of water in front of your door and shops doors for cats, dogs, and birds

I love heat, but - and I have experienced temperatures of 44C - this is absolutely punishing heat, one suffers through it, when, in the absence of A/C, even the nights are uncomfortably hot.

My parents loved Turkey; the best of luck.

Just found out my former high school banned cell phones COMPLETELY. No exceptions. Good on them--I wish that policy had existed when I was a student there.
Excellent news for the students in your former school. Not only to help with attention in class but also to cut down on social media and all the negative aspects students are exposed to.

I’m sure the sale of smart watches will go up at the local Apple store.

Never an issue when I was at school. They hadn’t been invented!

Glad I grew up when I did. I wouldn’t have wanted to deal with social media when I was a teen.
Also very glad there are no videos of the antics I got up to when I was a teenager as well.

The temperature today was 58 degrees Celsius. My car has material damage; the paint is black and is now chipping. It's 11:26 pm, it's 28 degrees outside, and we're burning again. I'll take the car to be painted tomorrow 😒

My middle school, which my younger brother now attends, used to only prohibit phones during lectures when I was there, but now since spring break they’re banned everywhere, even during lunch.

They only allow Chromebooks or BYOD devices like laptops and iPads for online work. This should discourage students from doing TikTok dances, pranks, and skipping class for stuff like that too. Hated it as they block the hallways and cause trouble like that.

High schools haven’t changed anything.

Agreeable.

that’ll be an idea they’ll do to get around these new policies. Apple also has Schooltime feature that allows them to use their watches only to check the time with a special analogue and digital watch face with their name on it, and it will also turn on do not disturb or a Focus mode on when enabled to discourage them from accessing apps unless if exited by the user or outside the time.

But some teachers that are aware of this policy may not allow it entirely as they can still use it as a conduit to cheat on their exams and tests. At testing centres they make sure every digital stuff we have even on our body like Apple Watch and AirPods, and even ray ban camera glasses are taken off before we sit for the exam.

Ah the old days, when you could take a calculator and abacus into the exam hall!

Abacus 🧮 ❌ these weren’t a thing after the early elementary school years for me cos these were so big to carry. But calculators are accepted to bring for testing as long it’s math or science one. Even some engineering courses.

But if it’s an AP course for math, physics or computer science they only allow a list of certain tests that can have these calculators unless an accommodation is available. Same goes with state testing we only are allowed to use the built in calculators inside the testing software and not bring our own.

Matters in the political realm are on my mind. But this isn’t the place to discuss.
When I get overwhelmed with the political (And it is often - I work for a government) I try to remind myself to refocus on the personal, the local, the neighborly, something I can do something about, and start there. You don't always get to see the impact of your work - but sometimes you do!

Not overwhelmed, just the disbelief of some of the things going on around the globe.

I cannot sleep. Damn, this summer I’ve ruined my wake/sleep cycle, and I cannot sleep until it’s too late.

It’s 4AM… and I’m as awake as someone at 6PM. Actually, more than that. No coffee… maybe I should eat something
This is my life. I RARELY get a good nights sleep or REM dreaming anymore. For me, it came with age. Some periods I go for several days with NO sleep and, as you might expect, this takes a toll on both my mental and physical health. I get tired and go to bed (or sleep in my recliner) and I might doze for 90 minutes or so and then I'm awake either going to the restroom or grabbing something to eat (part of that is medication induced). If I wake up between 4-5 am, I get up (give up?) and make a cup of coffee. Occasionally I will doze back off (have spilled a cup of coffee in my lap doing that) for a short while but the nights of trying to keep a routine sleeping schedule are over for me I'm afraid. Fortunately, I'm retired so I don't have to worry about trying to go to work after nights like that as you might.

I sleep each night from around 9-5 but I wake up multiple times through the night and have a hard time staying asleep. This is a relatively recent (within the past few years) development. I used to sleep like a rock but anymore, go to bed exhausted and wake up tired, never feeling rested. Of course yanno, the typical things married, 3 kids, jobs, life etc. keeps us exceptionally busy and under slept I guess but holy guacamole, I wake up each morning and feel like I've been run over LOL. Achy joints and pains have been recent as well but arthritis is definitely a getting old ailment that family on my moms side especially has dealt with, sop not entirely surprised about that one.

Oh well dems da break I s'pose. Yanno gettin old :D

I can relate to your experience. I now wake up at about 4:30am every morning, no matter how early or late I go to bed. Since I can't sleep further, I usually have cereal and make some coffee as an early morning breakfast. Then just proceed into the day. I've read this kind of sleeping schedule and routine is fairly common as you get older.

And do you get sleepy or groggy at, let’s say, 9 or 10AM? Because if you wake up at 4:30AM, by late morning your body might be asking for at least a nap.

I’m not sure that’s from getting old. Not necessarily at least. I’ve been experiencing that feeling since my late twenties, and I think it was a depression symptom. Later, I felt better, and lately I am again experiencing but I suspect there’s something related to my breathing during sleep that makes me feel tired in the morning. Not sure if I have sleep apnea but I’ve been told that I snore so maybe there’s something to research as a possible cause.

Now that AOL dialup is going away, it brought back some memories when I first signed up. It was definitely less that 50K members. I started to remember getting announcement when it got up to 100K and like a big thing for them. Use to get the floppy disk, then the never ending CD AOL installers. Why they kept sending those when I'm already a member was weird to me. I think my modem back then was 9600 or was it 14kbs? back then?....Anyway it brought back fun memories of those days.

I discovered my 2400 bd modem with my first Mac (a 430 Performa we bought for the kids..yeah, right) and an AOL disc that came with the package. Because I live in rural America, there was no local number for AOL, so I would stay up after my family went to bed and at 11 pm the long-distance phone rates went down to their lowest (yes, I'm THAT old) so I would wait until then to dial up AOL (the phone bills were still high). I had never touched a computer before but those early days online changed my life for both the good and the bad. I later learned to dial up the local college system and wrote a script from there to hop empty, but still active, telnet ports to DELPHI which was a text-based forum similar to AOL without the GUI. Lots of memories of those days (early 90s).

Even before I had my own personal computer at home I was enchanted by the whole computer thing. I still vividly remember the day that a friend lent me her "luggable" (supposedly portable) machine to use while I was taking a post-graduate course in online data searching. I set up the computer on our kitchen table, managed to stretch the long telephone cord from our wall phone so that it could reach the acoustic coupler on the machine, then turned on the machine and then carefully typed in the number to dial up Dialog, the online service I was about to use.

Magically, letters and words began appearing on the screen and I went into the database, staring at the options listed. I said wonderingly to my husband, who was nearby watching this whole process with equal fascination, "I've got the whole world on our kitchen table!"

Now we have the whole world on our wrists or in our pockets.....
