Well without getting too political we came to their aid signalling the start of WW2. I suspect that could be part of it.
Are you sure?

Or is it possible that Great Britain might be more tolerant than other states? I remember an episode from "Ripper Street" that Russian Jews went to Great Britain.

Or has this something to do with monarchy? I don't know! I only ask!

I could ask my former Polish boss but I see him too rarely.

Too pitty! I just wanted to write: "You idiot!" 😉No, just a joke! I think I would make the same fault as you.
Oh no, I totally feel like one this time. My go-to cardio for my weight loss journey has always been walking, but I have been pushing myself too hard lately. This time I really blew it. I don't think I blew a disc or anything but I was literally crying from pain for about an hour. Luckily I found some muscle relaxers in the cabinet so I'm hoping they help. I see my doctor on Friday and I'm going to ask her about a surgeon.

No I’m not sure. I’m not Polish and my family have been living in England for a few centuries at least.
I suspect like most migration each person will have their own decision making process.

It's very interesting to see and to recall that almost all words in English get written lowercase. In German this would cause a lot of misunderstanding if we would write all German words that way.
Yes, but think of how you'd put so much less wear on the shift key on your computer keyboard!

It has been dry, interspersed with brief bouts - and occasional days - of sunshine, since my return over a week ago.

Today, it rained, and I felt.....affronted.

About the topic languages. Very interesting text I found:

"Martin Luther used Meissen chancery German for his Bible translation, an East Central German administrative language based on Saxon. He chose this linguistic middle ground to be understood in both northern and southern Germany. Luther made this language the model for modern Standard German."

I have thought about it. There is also no true or genuine German. Standard German seems be only written language.

And let's not forget Konrad Duden, because he carried out, so to speak, the first spelling reform. Or better said "writing reform"?! 🤔

I have read somewhere that foreigners though that Saxon dialect is the true or genuine German because Martin Luther spoke it. Very interesting! The Finnish people call us Germans "Saxons ".

I only fly maybe once a year. Flying to Dubrovnik in a couple of days and am feeling anxious at the moment. Why? I do not know as when I do I really enjoy it. Strange....

How often do you guys fly and do you get nervous at all?

Usually once or twice a year these days if work calls for it. But no, I don't get nervous once I'm actually through security!

Are there no dialects in English at all?

I've watched two episodes of The Rookie in the original English in the meantime and, to be honest, I can't really tell the difference between the series and the English we heard in class back then, except that the pronunciation was perhaps a bit more "rough".

Today I replanted a tree that was out in the front of the house for 12+ years. The tree hasn't grown well at all, it is still living, but I put it in a different spot so it is out of the way in a better location. I am undecided if I am going to plant something else in that spot, or not.

I fly a couple of times a year , usually . Never particularly nervous about it . But my early summer trip may be getting postponed , due to the current political/economic nonsense going on . August trip to the West Coast to see family is still on , so far . Maybe your anxiousness is a result of the current state of affairs worldwide , and having the media shove it in your face whether you like it or not.

Never. My arms just get too tired. LOL

Seriously, the last time I was on a plane was during the Reagan administration. It's been a while...

I've heard enough stories related to the hassles of flying that I have little to no interest in ever setting foot on a plane again. Indeed, an uncle--who had to travel a lot at the end ofhis career--mentioned how much happier he was when his business trips were regional enough that he could take the train, instead.

Do enjoy.
I did.

Hopefully something nice and French to accompany the coffee?
My former professor treated himself to a croissant (and butter and strawberry jam) with his coffee, - in fairness, he offered me one, also - but I was content with coffee (a flat white) and sparkling water.

We had a very good chat; he was one of the best teachers I have ever had, and was something of a mentor to me, when I was both an undergrad and a postgrad student. And we share a passion for history and an interest in politics.
My brain keeps telling me it's Friday. Bust sadly another days work stands between me and the three day weekend.
Just dropped into the library where a book awaited me; it is just as well I did so, as they are shut for the entire week-end.

Today I met a man from Scotland at the petrol station earlier. We spoke first in English and then in German. He needs German for his work. That was exciting!

Went to the doctor today about my back, and discovered I have 3 degenerative discs at T9, 10, and 11, and a protruding disc just above where I had my first surgery (L5-S1). Yay. So I walked out with a steroid shot, muscle relaxers, and pain killers. More drugs. I can't wait to see what medical marijuana does for me so I can get off the damn pills. I take enough as it is for everything else that's wrong with me!

I hope the medical marijuana helps your pain. Keep us posted!

These days, I find much of the actual experience of flying (security queues, uninteresting shops, squashed - and full - flights, tiny, shrinking and uncomfortable seats) profoundly unpleasant, and far removed from the world of glamour and adventure that once seemed to define flying, certainly, the days when my parents started travelling frequently.
How often do you guys fly
As often as I can; I live on an island and love to travel and explore new countries, cultures, cuisines, histories....
and do you get nervous at all?
No.

Good luck with your trip to Dubrovnik - an amazing city and fascinating country.

The Mount Everest season has opened up. It was delayed by a few weeks, at the khumbu icefall. We're used to waterfalls, but the khumbu icefall is a moving flow if ice where giant seracs can fall on the poor hiker. There was one such serac delaying the support staff from getting the rigging, ladders and ropes setup.

This delay may mean that typical summit windows (middle to late May) will get compressed with many people attempting the summit at the same time.

Climbing Mount Everest is not on my bucket list, I have no desire, but I am fascinated by it. I usually follow the season, as people try to ascend to the top of the world.
