Currently at Chicago O’Hare airport waiting to board my flight to New York City. Exciting, but also a bit unsettling because I can’t stop thinking about Steve Reich’s “Different Trains,” which is, let’s just say… very difficult to listen to - but a very important piece. Near the beginning of the piece are the words “from Chicago to New York” repeated. Quite an interesting connection but that’s currently what I’m about to do. Last time I was in NYC was when I was a kid so good to go again.

First day of PT today and it went well. More of the same stuff from before, but now that I'm 50 pounds lighter it's a lot easier to do. I hope it makes a difference this time. Other than that I've been really sick lately. I feel nauseous, weak, and I get random hot flashes. I don't know if it's a side-effect of a medication or something but I want it to stop.

Also had the strangest night. I couldn't sleep because I had this immense feeling in my chest that someone was thinking about me. Could be a friend, a lost love, a classmate, or even a deceased person, but I couldn't shake the feeling until this morning. I still feel weird about it but it's not as intense.

Good luck with the PT and well done on the weight loss. Keeping it off is my challenge. Lost loads about 10 years ago, but as I age I’m finding I have to do more exercise than before just to stay the same.

Thanks. It's a challenge for me, too. I can keep cravings at bay with the help of my GLP-1, but I'm starting to get sick from calorie deficit. I just don't get hungry anymore. Going to try protein (as suggested by another member) and maybe a pool pass to do some water-walking or swimming. Do you walk or anything to keep yours off?

Walk/jog/cross trainer every day. About an hour and a half minimum.

I currently walk 3 miles twice a week, but now that summer is coming it's hard to do. I already feel like crap so I don't want to get heat stroke on top of it. Maybe I'll go in the mornings? Anyway, there's a really beatiful park about 20 minutes from me that has the perfect paved trail.

Early morning works best. I usually do 3-4 miles before breakfast.
Then a couple at lunch.

Then a bit more before dinner.
Like most these days my desk job does little to help.

Walking in a nice location (I live in the countryside) definitely helps. Good for the mental health as well.

Had an 'oh s#@t' moment today - realized my Jamf 370 certification expired tomorrow. So, quickly paid for the exam and went through the review material VERY briefly, and took the exam. Passed by the skin of my teeth with 16/20 questions correct, for a score of 80. Not bad, but a bit upset that I didnt realize it was coming for renewal. Oh well, on to 2029 for the next renewal!

Well, that was a bust: Just bought my first "dose" of medical marijuana and all it did was give me a headache. I think I'm on too many antidepressants or something. PT is going well though. I was able to do the entire routine of stretches. Met a really cool therapist who has great taste in music (in my opinion) and we hit it off right away. Pretty cool guy.

Yesterday was Decent Brother's birthday; I had sent him a card earlier in the week - when the post office had re-opened immediately after the May Bank Holiday weekend - and had a nice chat with him by phone last night.

I discovered that I am violently, profoundly, allergic to marijuana, even more so, than I am to nicotine, to which I am also profoundly allergic, and utterly detest; the two worst sinus attacks of my life occurred at parties - decades ago - where I sampled the stuff, (marijuana).

Never again.

I think I'm on too many antidepressants or something.
Perhaps.

However, you could also be reacting against it; just because it is classed as "medicinal" doesn't necessarily mean that it actually agrees with you, or works well for you.

Great news, and good luck.

In NYC currently with a group of classmates and faculty - we’re doing a concert here to showcase our music programs. The room where they let me warm up before our rehearsal yesterday was the most beautiful-looking and sounding space I’ve ever played in. I played some Bach preludes and fugues, and it was a sublime experience. My word. I could have stayed in there all day. I’m otherwise leaving it to the other two pianists on the trip to play classical music because I’m representing the jazz department on this trip. But my gosh that was really amazing practicing in that room.

Managed to get to the market this morning: The sun was shining, and the produce was insanely tempting.

@Clix Pix would have really enjoyed it.

I treated myself to plenty of fruit (oranges, mangoes - yes, imported), apricots which are just coming into season, strawberries, which are locally grown (one thinks glasshouses, and one also thinks global warming) and raspberries. These joined the lemons and pink grapefruit already at home.

Olives (green spicy olives, with chilli, green olives with garlic and thyme, anchovy stuffed olives, and black olives with garlic) were bought, plus, I also splurged on pesto (sundried tomato pesto, classic basil pesto, and the seasonal - as in, so seasonal, blink and you will miss it, as this is only available for a few weeks a year - wild garlic pesto). Semi-sundried tomatoes and some mozzarella also found their way into my basket.

On the topic of tomatoes, I had intended to buy some cherry tomatoes, but was waylaid by the sight of small Marzano tomatoes (the same tomatoes as go into the legendary San Marzano tinned tomatoes); I bought a bag of them, along with two small cucumbers, scallions (French onions) and parsley.

I knownone should not put too much stock on social media but I made a brief throw-away comment on a fan account on Instagram 5 days ago and am near 6,000 likes. I think I hit a nerve with it but am not sure to post it here as I used my real name. 🙂

I'm envious...it could be a month before locally grown strawberry season, which will sadly last for about five minutes. Timing of the season's start, of course, can vary based on weather. The length of season also depends on weather--I remember one year it was bad enough that basically it was "no berries" unless you went to produce markets that had connections. (Let's have some fun imagining sneaking up, and saying in a barely audible voice: "Pssst. Have any strawberries?" And the nice man in the trench coat and sunglasses looks around, and says: "Yeah. Got the money?" The reality was more boring--the places that had berries were older produce operations that had long running relationships with farmers. So they got prioritized for the 2, 3 berries that the farmer could actually harvest.)

I once had a strawberry plant in a pot. It didn't produce much, but I got a berry here and there all summer long.

Greenhouse...I wonder if "someday" I could rig up some sort of greenhouse with some strawberry plants and get a long season of a few berries here and there...

I've been tihnking off and on that I'd like to be able to get to a farmers' market this year. I like them, but there isn't a good one with good selection and reasonable prices that's convenient. I know of one that might be good, and I'm looking at how to be able to get there.

I had never seen them before today, but can attest that they are delicious.
Mmmmm.... I've never seen them before, either, but can only imagine how wonderful they are -- the taste of fresh tomatoes definitely beats the tinned ones anyway, but San Marzano are so delightful when in a can that they must be absolutely sublime as the actual unprocessed, freshly grown fruit!

Our fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries haven't yet been available, but they should be soon. Normally the month of June is the one when we can get freshly picked, right off the bush berries.

Ah, SS, your whole paragraph about the treats you selected at the market had me all but drooling! Mmmmm..... We have a freestanding permanent farm market (open during most of the year but not in the depths of winter, understandably) not all that far from me. They have nice vegetables and fruits and various jams.

Alas, they don't carry olives as part of their regular offerings. Happily, I can get various kinds of olives at one of our specialty organic food chains at their Olive Bar, which has many more offerings, a versatile selection of the different styles and types than what is available in the local grocery store.

Also every weekend there are farmer's markets at various locations around the county, where thirty or more farmers bring their produce and set up tables to display the fresh vegetables and fruits for everyone to purchase and enjoy. Parking is usually horrendous, though, depending upon the location.

Usually they are open only in the morning and then all the farmers pack up their remaining items and head back to their farms. I am not an early-morning person, so subsequently have missed out on seeing what they've all got to offer.

Although on the plus side: the farmers are more likely in my experience to cut prices when it gets close to closing time!

I had a feeling that you would appreciate it, if only vicariously.

This afternoon, I headed into town to collect a baguette that I had ordered in advance from a small (exceptional) local bakery; my various pestos and cheeses and olives and small, plum, (sweet and tasty) San Marzano tomatoes will all now be accompanied by fresh, French baguette.
