Well, things are different in different parts of the world, I guess! I believe you live (or then lived) in the UK, where I understand the cops also wouldn't carry guns like they would have on HIll Street Blues!I can still remember my shock as a student (when watching Hill Street Blues) at how the cops being briefed sipped coffee while this was happening; to me, at that time, there was coffee and there was - were - work or study settings, and - to my mind - they didn't mix.
You could see coffee being consumed while working on even older US TV shows, like Perry Mason. I think it was probably a standard part of office culture in the US having coffee around.
I certainly saw my teachers with coffee in class all the time.
I've seen photos from the college where my father taught that even show things like a student in a dorm room, studying, with a coffee pot with coffee nearby. I know the offices in both buildings he worked in during the early 1980s had a coffee pot. (I remember being fascinated seeing cubes of sugar the first time.)
Of course, none of this coffee would have been very good. It would not have been the coffee you gently sip and savor. It was just a hot drink that would--at best--be tolerably drinkable.
