What do they taste like?
They are tart, primarily used for applesauce and have a quality when made into sauce that I’ve not found in another apple, which I can’t adequately describe other than really good to my taste buds. :oops:

Hah, I know that drill! For me it was a couple of deer mice caught engaging in the guilty pleasures of having raided a birdseed stash. I left the lid off a galvanized trash-bin on the deck one afternoon after filling the bird feeders and this is what greeted me next morning. They must have jumped in off the deck table but couldn't get back out... so they just partied down all night. They were way too cute to let the cats at them so I just let them go out by the woodpile.

They look kinda like little deer. :) Mice in the house are generally shown no mercy.

Been doing that with custard (the firmer kind), cake or ice cream.

Made plenty of chutney, jams, preserves and jellies. Off the top of my head I think I've bought and used up close to 100 sealable jars.



Peaches, apricots, cherries tart, plums, etc. There's non-stone fruit to pick too. I have no idea what I did last year after the season but it exploded this year. Something I did with the soil. I don't use any synthesized nutritional aids either.


What made it "worse" is a family friend from upstate overnighted in a wood crate many preserves and other foodstuffs grown on their land. So we've got that, too. I got some nice gourmet grape jellies from the renters of grape fields I own upstate. They rent the land, effectively, and produce grapes and wine. No idea how profitable it is, but they've never missed a payment.


Sadly I know no cheese makers.
I love both cherry and peach cobbler!

Apple (and other fruit tarts - my mum used to make apple tarts, cherry tarts, rhubarb tarts and crumbles when we were young, but the delights of "cobbler" are unknown to us this side of The Pond).
Cobbler isn't popular in Ireland or UK. It's somewhat like a crumble, but the crumble is large blobs of delicately sweet dough which offsets the sweet/sour richness of the cooked fruit. I usually prefer a red plum variant. It tends to be rather tart.

Red plum in that sort of dish sounds absolutely delicious.

I love Apple cobbler, a variation called Apple Brown Betty. I also used to make a “dump cake” by dumping a can of cherry pie filing into a baking dish and mixing up yellow cake (can’t remember off hand how much moisture I added, not the same as for making a cake) and then baked it.

Apple cobbler? Never heard of it. I've heard of dump cake. Learned the term from some Texan a number of years ago. Suffice to say, the name doesn't sound appetizing.

That is what I felt about this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but that was for personal reasons, to do with the passing of my mother six months ago.

Not really, I guess I just woke up tired. We had a very powerful thunderstorm last night, so I assume my sleep wasn't of much quality.
I am also pondering what is my "next step" (workwise), so to speak as there's some signal among all the noise that it's time to think about it.

Might I suggest throwing rocks at a bottle on a stump while shouting the options you have until you hit the bottle and do whatever the last thing you shouted was?

My brother employs a cost benefit analysis when pondering such matters and says it often provides food for thought and can be a very valuable exercise as long as you are honest with yourself - after all, this need not be shown to anyone else, it is to stimulate contemplation for yourself: Two lines - vertical - down a page, and enumerated - written - reasons pro and con, or against (whatever the question, or issue, is) in each side.

That's why you have to go to Tibet and do it. There's more open space there.

I've heard the Mojave desert is also sufficiently open, but I wouldn't want to go there this time of year.

Tibet is on my bucket list. Not much due to spirituality, but for actual historical interest (for example, same as Machu Picchu).
As for the desert, yeah I'd avoid it... I mean, even TX is quite hot right now :)

It’s been warm all day here in the UK, but not sunny.

I have a photographer coming tomorrow to take photos of our house. However if they are not professional enough, I might just shoot my own.
But the sale of my house where I have lived these past 17 years and the purchase of the next are very much on my mind.

Temperatures, which have been surprisingly cool for this time of year, are set to increase this coming week, (although mainland Europe is set for a scorcher).

Lol. I was checking the coming weather on my iPhone and it said hot and sunny all week. I thought that was strange, then I realised it was showing Barcelona!

A bit too warm for me. But I’ve been pretty active this evening.

Agreed. temperature wise, 20-30C is the sweet spot for me. I can handle up to 33-34C relatively well, but do feel uncomfortable when it goes over that.

In Georgia (Caucasus Georgia), one summer it was 42-44C for around two months, which was torture - it was too hot to sleep comfortably at night, and I loathe air conditioning, though I have since had to learn to live with it, when I work in countries with hot climates.
 
A bit too warm for me. But I’ve been pretty active this evening.

What's on my mind this afternoon is yesterday. Specifically, cadging a ride with the guy who usually mows my lawn and who was heading into town for some shopping. I just wanted to hit up the ATM and do a little grocery shopping. Upon exiting his vehicle in my driveway I thought to hand him the money for the next mowing plus a little for his trouble, saying casually, "So you'll take this now and then just mow whenever you get a chance during the week, eh? Thanks for the ride into town." Then today I awoke to this forecast of weather:

Well anyway looks like maybe the season of furnace-heat is finally over for the 2018-19 winter. :rolleyes:
