My colleague is heading to Barcelona tomorrow. I’m glad I was there in March.

Ouch.

I expect that it will be uncomfortably hot in Barcelona for the remainder of this week.

In France, they have announced record temperatures, - the hottest recorded day ever in France occurred this week - which is both surprising and ominous so early in the summer. (Usually one expects "record temperatures" to occur in July, or sometimes, August, but not June).

It is hotter here in the DC area than is usual in June, too — last I checked it was 93 degrees (Fahrenheit) but now it’s clouding up and we are more than likely going to get some rain, which will cool things down a little. I can only imagine how alarming and uncomfortable this kind of hot weather is for people in Europe, as you guys are just not used to it, not at all, especially this early in the season. There was an article in today’s Washington Post about this and how people who had previously casually sniffed at the whole idea of air-conditioning are embracing it and flocking to places which do have it!

Personally, I detest air conditioning, but I can see the reasons for it.

In Europe, modern offices will have air conditioning, but offices in lovely old buildings most likely will not, and - while I love old buildings - in this sort of weather, working out of them can be torture.

The big difference is that most domestic residences don't have air conditioning, - there has never really been a need for it - whereas modern offices most certainly do.

And, when I was a kid, and student, cars didn't have air conditioning either, although that has changed in recent decades.

I remember driving to the South of France in pre AC cars as a kid. We had one car with seats that were plastic like leatherette material, with cloth in the middle. So as kids wearing shorts you had to sit dead centre on the cloth bit. If your legs touched the plastic it was about as hot as a boiling kettle! Very unpleasant. Mind you those family holidays usually were!

Not much of a fan of humidity, vile or otherwise, myself.

Initially, mind you, when glancing at your post, my eye thought it read "Vile humanity", and I did blink a little.
Well, that too at times.

That said, on humid or very warm days I'll dump ice into the compost bin and aerate it to keep it from combusting. Or shovel most of it out onto a liner and let it air out if it's too hot. I use an IR reader and a probe.

Agreed, but, to be entirely candid, vile humidity is pretty vile, whereas vile humanity can be appalling.

I actually misread that one at first and thought it said "appealing"... so my mind was rummaging through the times I've found vile humanity appealing and was wondering if misogynistic rock'n'roll musicians count... not to single any of them out right here but there are a few whose music I have enjoyed. Probably only because I don't live with them and my experience of them is limited to hearing their lyrics, mitigated if not outright obliterated by the occasionally very well produced music.

But yes, as to your post, vile humanity is appalling. The "appeal" of it doesn't even reach to my wanting to read about examples in the news, even if one feels obliged to stay at least minimally informed about the state of human civilization.

As for humidity, I'm rather intolerant of it in the heights of summer, but fortunately here there's usually a breeze in the hills. I live at the top of an east-west one and halfway down a north-south one. In winter one is not so fond of breeze... but I try to remind myself of summertime advantages. :)

Some of the valleys here are another story. They can almost remind me of being in one of the big subway stations in NYC. Down in the city, all the heat from power transformers and the crowds augment the natural heat and humidity of a concrete jungle surrounded by water. We don't have concrete jungles here but there's water, water everywhere in the little creeks and tributaries of two major river systems. Maybe in a canoe on the river it's nice on a Friday afternoon, but stuck in traffic in rush hour along a road that parallels the water is maddening unless the A/C in your car is working.

I really hate Safelite. A brand new windshield wiper they charged me for but didn't give me until I pointed it out, well it flew off during a rain storm on the highway during rush hour.

It had never been in a rain storm before. My whole life flashed as I navigated very carefully to get to where I could park and a hail storm was coming. Thankfully didn't get hit.

I'm guessing Safelite didn't put it on right and I could have caused a massive wreck due to that fact.

I'm at home now, just feeling really shaken.

Never pay to have a wiper fitted. It’s the easiest thing in the world to do. You don’t even need a tool. Just pay careful attention when taking the old one off and make sure you by the right one.

Glad you’re okay. We had at least two storm cells tear through here today.

And humidity...bleh...yuck...argh.

It’s not even July and it’s too hot on Long Island. :( Sends cool thoughts to everyone in this thread.

I just finished eating popcorn with butter an nutritional yeast. At the bottom of the bowl, I noticed movement in the remaining yeast. It was a ****ing mealworm.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

At least it's living up to it's name.

Ewwwwwwwww. They're probably better if made crispy? Reminds me of back in school when we routinely complained about the "grey meat" served out of ancient stoves in the dorm kitchens for upperclassmen. Everything about those dorms was wonderful except the food... the views, the relaxed rules, the suites with separate bedrooms and a shared bath for each two girls etc ... but that food, wow. One day a girl whose father was CEO of some Fortune 50 company snail-mailed her dad a piece of the leftover roast from the weekend, figuring he'd be revulsed and maybe spring for a new kitchen.

But no. So we soldiered on with the grey meat and the pretty dicey chicken a la king made on Thursdays from previous Sunday's leftover roast birds. A month or so later, and a couple days after the same girl had said "I mean really what could be worse than this grey meat that I could mail him to get the point across?", a guy in the student lounge who was a senior and also living in one of those nice dorms with a terrible old kitchen said "well how about the missing piece of the half-mouse served me in salad at lunch yesterday, if we can find it."

Yuck! But mealworms are pretty gross too... they would also have been easier to mail to that girl's dad as a hint about how bad the food was. He never did cave on the idea of a new kitchen for our dorm, I think he was a Brit and figured school should toughen you up for life ahead. He had already donated money for a whole library wing though, so I dunno why that girl thought he was gonna go into pocket again until his next kid went to college...
