@Scepticalscribe when you think that conspiracy theories can’t go wilder… apparently Ancient Rome never existed.

Looks like I am wasting time reading all those books on Rome. Oh well.

The silver lining: I am sure that I am not the dumbest person on earth.
The music in the background is what makes it for me. 🤣 And I thought the misinformation being peddled about science was bad.*

*Just the other day ABC News ran a botched story on fusion claiming that hydrogen was 'heavier' than helium... Ouch.

Ouch, indeed.

Good grief.

They are the first two elements on the Periodic Table.......not some obscure element lurking at the cutting edge of imagination, and science, and reality, and invariably found at the far end of the Periodic Table.

Well, what can I say?

Apart from sympathise (and deplore the insult to the noble profession of "historian" which is how I still describe myself when asked, though I sometmes qualify it with a preceding verb, as in "lapsed historian").

Perhaps Friedrich Schiller expressed it best: "Against ignorance (stupidity?) the gods themselves battle (contend?) in vain."
What I truly wonder is if she obtained her purpose: go viral. I seem to notice that many kids - heck, even adults now - are willing to appear as idiotic as they can in order to go viral for a couple of days.

What puzzles me is why anyone would wish to go viral by demonstrating so comprehensively and so conclusively to the entire watching world (rather than to their own, personal, private, small circle) that they are a complete cretin.

Why would anybody wish to be known for this? What an extraordinary ambition.

Why, instead, would one not prefer to be known for something sane, sensible, worthy, or - perish the thought - for something that will leave our common home on this planet in somewhat better shape than we found it?

Is this a new - contemporary - take on the quote attributed to Andy Warhol where he is supposed to have said that: "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."

Probably because it’s easier to do. Changing the world even a tiny bit is hard, and it takes more effort than filming a 20 seconds clip or changing one’s avatar with the colors/flag of the daily issue. I’d venture to say that it’s also linked with the self-centric philosophy of life that guides most people living in the West. Used to being at the center of attention, that’s what they crave for especially once they hit the real world and understand that in reality, the world keeps spinning without bothering about them.

That’s my theory at least.

Why is indeed the question, but then look at the z-list celebrities queuing up to eat a kangaroo’s genitalia or pretend to dance or sing when they don’t have an ounce of rhythm in their bones.

I’m certainly not in the least bit interested in watching.

Likewise.

Such stuff is neither educational, entertaining, nor interesting.

Agreed, although from an anthropological perspective some of them are quite amusing.

What I actually do find interesting is how behaviors propagate. A few weeks ago I talked about videos in which ladies - heck, sadly even kids - pull their shirts. I wonder how it became popular and why.

One that truly interest me is the “look away from the camera” act many do while speaking. Some of them exaggerate them so much it’s so funny.

Money! People will do anything for money, and it's easier to be an "influencer" than to be David Attenborough, it's easier to make a fool out of yourself than to be a real comedian like, say, John Cleese or Rowan Atkinson.

They probably don't care that in two years they will be forgotten, they know that nowadays, in those two years, they can make a lot of money and be set for life, assuming they don't squander all of their money. I'll even go as far as to say that, probably, many of them don't even realize they're just the new laughing stock and valued by society just a half step above an attraction in a 1800s freak show.

Yep. I think the person reporting the story missed that 2 hydrogen atoms fuse to make one helium atom, an odd error to make in a story about fusion. Mind you, in my field of neuroscience we still get stories in the popular press, and the occasional movie (with Lucy being the absolute worst - I could feel my neurons die as I watched), about how people use only 10% of their neurons.

Sorry it has to be said, clearly many don't even use 10%...

I'd like to buy one of these ;

Ugh sorry to hear that but as I recall you are also vaxxed (like most MR members) so it should not be as intense especailly with the "milder" variants dominant now - take care.
Yes I’ve had my jab and booster. But not been eligible for another booster yet unfortunately.
My wife who isn’t vaccinated is more of a concern. Hard to isolate 100% when you share a home.

Go viral…

Just read from Swedish Sport reporting, that Spanska Marca reported, that Messi’s Soccer jersey is sold out in all sizes all over the world.

He’s a popular guy that wizard right now. I don’t know him or even know a lot about him.
But he’s pretty likeable, and a damn good football player from what I’ve seen.
See how the championship ends?

I am enough vaxxed though. Good to know.

Honestly I just go low tech - backpack, tent, sleeping bag, etc. There's something about cars, vans and motor homes that spoils the outdoors for me (the west coast of Scotland is amazing but plagued large vehicles trying to negotiate the steep, bendy, single-track roads). IMO if you want to glamp, just hike from hotel to hotel. Still, to each their own, and this does look interesting and well-designed.

I had my fifth vaccination for COVID (the bivalent one this time) a few weeks ago. I am missing a bit of lung on both sides, and I am entering my sixth decade, but I don't really understand how they are prioritising vaccines in the UK. I would imagine there are many with greater need than me.

Anyway, I had omicron. It sucked for a few days but here was no need for medical intervention. I hope your case is mild like mine was. Take care and I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks. Yes I’m hoping for mild too. It’s not too bad today. Just can’t get warm, then I’m too warm. Especially at night.
