The thing about awful music is why do people always insist on playing it out loud? Usually on devices unable to cover the range and handle the volume. Just put some Queen on instead!
One day at work someone was blaring music I liked. The were at least a dozen cars away. Could they even hear at all anymore?

I have discovered in recent years, (especially since the death of my mother, and, more recently still, the enforced lock-down and solitude that pandemic conditions decreed), that while I love music (that is, music, not noise), I have really come to appreciate the sound of silence, the quality of silence, the sheer joy of silence. It is wonderful.

I am with you on this. Silence is incredibly important and beautiful. That’s probably at the source with my fascination with monasticism. I read a book on silence last year, it was very insightful.

Is a piece of diamond worth a swim in a sea of s-it ?

There's a lot of **** on YouTube, any streaming service you can mention and the internet as a whole.

Very cool vintage pics and factoids from history.

Aslan Pahari

Lots of cool stuff - especially when he takes down various conspiracy theories posted on other channels when he says "Hello my freind" after a short excerpt from the nut in question you know he is about to destroy someone but politely and with humour.

Ok I also follow a few (female) pilots and athletes but otherwise just a fun thing to look at on my commute.

I would respectfully beg to disagree. Much rap is basically poetry*, often describing the ills of society.
Grunge, OTOH, is noise.
As too, are those wailing opera singers. I can't give you any examples, as when one of them pops up on my radio, I change channels before I can find out the singer/song.
Philistine!🧐 Understandable, since people either love opera or hate opera, no middle ground.

I love opera. Although I have walked out on an opera where the prima donna was less than top notch. My first opera experience was listen to Maria Callas on my grandfather's record player. She is the gold standard by which I judge every other prima donna. Few come close, but none have surpassed her in my book.

My nephew claims to hate opera, yet crank Ride of the Valkyries up to the eleven when doing yard work.🤨 He claims it's because he's a Marlon Brando fan (Apocalypse Now). Uh-huh.😏 I've caught him humming Habanera from Carmen.😉 His girlfriend liked that tune.🤭 He recent changed set the ringtone for when his girlfriend calls to the Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore.🤔 I think his girlfriend might be a positive influence on him.😁

I hear you but I think there’s a difference. YouTube is mostly a library of things, some aimed at entertainment, some aimed at instruction. TikTok is mostly an entertainment driven app with an algorithm specifically designed for continuous, quick entertainment. I am sure you can find gold in it, exactly as I find some good stuff on Instagram (although since they’re now trying to compete with TikTok they’re also getting worse) by following my interests. That doesn’t change that the overall design of the app is for pure, eternal entertainment by death of a thousand 10 second long videos.

Totally agree on Maria Callas!
I have a pretty large collection of her recordings on CD's, and ripped files of it. As it happens I don’t use them as I don’t listen much to music at all these days. The sound of silence, not the song, give me generally more pleasure today then music.
But as the collection, of La Divina's voice and work, on Apple Music are pretty large, I re-enjoy her voice anew at times today.

Oh, very well said, both of you.

At its best, opera is terrific.

And, when a really good performance is heard live, - and such experiences are a real privilege - this is a superlative, transcendental and wonderful experience.

Yes but for me it's that I want to be in control of the sounds around me. Sometimes I want music or TV. Sometimes I just want to be on the laptop with the sound muted

But Groundhog Day is still ahead of us ...

In an unbounded loop, can one even use "behind" and "ahead"?
Well, I do know of the film/movie of that name, and know what the metaphor (deriving from the movie) means, (when applied to life), but - as I'm not American - the actual date of this event is not something I have committed to memory as I didn't grow up with that cultural knowledge.

I've always been really shy—I never played at recess in elementary school, and 6th grade was really hard for me. I think it's gotten better over the years, but I hope that college will give me the opportunity to meet lots of new people and make new friends.

Yes closing in on driving home in the light again
Sydney is laid out that many workers drive eastward along the Great Western Highway in the morning to get to work, then drive westward along it to go home.
It means that each trip you are driving into the sun.
There is also a TV show called Squinters, around these people.
As well, changes to and from Daylight Saving mean that you get a repeat dose twice a year.
Somebody needs to rotate Sydney around 90 Degrees, so we all drive North/South to/from work.
Even better, 180 degrees, so that we are always driving with the sun behind us...

Sorry that was a surly answer from me. TBH I spend a lot less time on TikTok and FB (the latter is the only place I can keep in touch with many in my family) than IG or Twitter and am trying to cut down in any case except for the really worthy accounts.

Now to rant about Netflix ugh..

I actually found your reply interesting. There are indeed lots of interesting things on TikTok. However, is the juice worth the squeeze? I am not sure.

The reason why I was on TikTok the other day is that I saw a Joey Swoll video on Facebook in which he exposed this girl making fun of an elderly man at the gym. I thought, “this can’t be true,” so I decided to check. Just out of curiosity. Of course, what Mr Swoll talked about was real, as his concerns about what is happening on TikTok in relation to gym goers is quite true and disturbing (see this brief explanation by Moist Critical, aptly titled “This has to stop!”).

Of course we all know the story of Pandora and the famous box, so despite having no followers and follows I ended up being sucked inside a vortex of sadness and dung. In 10 or 15 minutes of continuous scrolling (I have never seen an entertaining concept so dangerous, it’s like receiving hundreds of dopamine injections) I saw:
  • Stupid “dances” we’re familiar with
  • People getting seriously injured apparently on purpose
  • Girls that clearly want their… femininity being very very visible to viewers. I bet some are underage.
  • “Prank” videos. It seems that it’s now fashionable to touch strangers or disturb them when they mind their business (even when seated at a restaurant).
  • Girls answering to questions such as what is your body count and or what is the most shameful thing you did. Needless to say, the answers don’t give much hope.
  • Lactating videos. Of these I noticed two kinds. One is the “I can feed my kid wherever I want” (a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with). One is the “I can feed my kid wherever I want you to shut the f up and I’ll make sure to do it in the most awful possible way”. I saw a couple of women lactating in public their 3yo (yes, a fully grown toddler) just for the sake of it and probably to get a reaction about which they can complain later.
  • Political rants with actually zero content and so bad that would make Ben Shapiro sound good to a leftist and Rachel Maddox sound good to a right winger.
  • People filming private moments (“I play with my kid”, “oh I sleep next to my husband”, “oh I am having a piss” etc) and not living them.
  • People making fun of random strangers
  • Fake outrage videos (caption “when they tell you can’t dress like this!”, which clearly nobody ever said).
  • Young girls (like even 10yo) Terri king and even in twerking classes or something.
  • More crap that I can even describe.
Seriously, all of that in less than 20 minutes. I read that kids spend several hours a day on that thing. I can’t even imagine what their brain will become. I am shocked, scared, and disturbed, and I say this as a person that wouldn’t censor (by law) anything other than child pornography, for the first time ever I was thinking that censorship might not be that bad here.

Granted, I think that the algorithm picked up in less than two videos that I am a male so it tried to show me what evidently attracts males on that platform. Considering what I saw I think I confused it a bit about my age.

TBH I spend a lot less time on TikTok and FB (the latter is the only place I can keep in touch with many in my family) than IG or Twitter and am trying to cut down in any case except for the really worthy accounts.
Looks like we predicted the future as TikTok is now on the front page https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/02/us-senator-letter-apple-ban-tiktok/

Now to rant about Netflix ugh..
Bring it on!! 😂 Netflix lost its way imo.

Well, I have better things to do with my time than to waste even two seconds on TikTok! I also don't bother watching mind-numbing videos by so-called "influencers" or video "reviews" of photographic gear or computers by self-proclaimed "experts."
I personally like gym stuff, lots of stuff on IG gives many ideas on workouts and food intake. It also helps a bit with motivation. Obviously the other side of the coin are “influencers” whose only goal is clicks (which means lots of “shape your butt” videos by ladies and lots of “ego lift” videos by males).

This is how it's been for me with every job. Why can it never be the other way? This is why I love twilight. Light enough to drive but no sun high enough to blind me. And the problem is that the time changes come at the worst time right around when twilight is starting at the times I go to/from work
