Do people still get charged for sending sms and mms in this day and age? Surly not.

Sms and mms has been free for a while here in Australia.

From what I’ve heard the carriers in Australia understood not to charge for these things way earlier than others.

Even more laughable than charging for sending sms is to charge for receiving them. Which was a thing in some countries.

Wow that is ridiculous. lucky you don’t get charged when sending via iMessage

Someone needs to tell Boris to get with the times.

Well you get charged the mobile data if you’re on cellular. Lots of carriers out there still not offering really unlimited internet.

A lot of these carriers are greedy evil scum who couldn’t care less about their customers, only thing that matters to them is their shareholders and 💰

My wife likes being able to chat from her iPad. My youngest is too little for a phone so iMessage is great for her to send a message to me or mom or to share pictures. Only our house computer is Windows.
The only weird thing is sometimes with some people iMessage will stop working and it switches to regular text message while my other contacts will still be iMessage.

Best thing about iMessage for me is easier to share memes with others lol.

MMS is such a limited option so that's a no-go for sharing stuff.

That can happen when the recipient loses internet but still has cellular coverage. I've had that happen sometimes when cellular data was just super bad.

What about if let’s say I’m in the UK I text someone in Spain, do I get charged for SMS?
Depends on whether you text a UK or Spanish number...if the receiving number is an UK number like someone on holiday for example then the sender wouldnt be charged but the receiver could be depending on their mobile provider (actually not that likely these days as most UK providers dont charge abroad in the EU\few other places and allow you to use your allowances abroad as well) but if you were to text a Spanish number then you probably would be charged.

Why is this thread still going. 🤔 seems like the op has no interest in iMessage or iPhone.

Admittedly Apple Messages is great but there are Android equivalents (not referring to WhatsApp).

In the UK anyway RCS is getting major traction either through Samsung Messages or Android Messages from all major networks.

Wife and I have Samsung devices at the moment and we can share full resolution pictures and videos just like Apple Messages. We also have all that memoji malarkey equivalents available if needed.

We even get a BLUE message if it's RCS or Green if it is SMS! Lol

Recently, I have noticed an increasing number of my contacts are using the RCS feature even on budget Nokia and alike.

Google will soon add (if not already implemented) end to end encryption as well it seems. Future looks good.

What is status with end-to-end encryption in rcs? Apple is not gonna support rcs without encryption, though it is questionable they ever will anyway.

1) encrypted and not harvesting my data

2) sticker implementation is more fun

3) drawing / scribble support when in landscape

Bonus) every so often I send a message with a full screen effects

I only have one contact I regularly text who used the Messages app, I would say the only thing I am not so keen on is the UI for replying to individual messages - on WhatsApp you just swipe the message you wanna reply to, whereas iMessages makes you press and hold and then tap 'Reply', I know it's not exactly difficult but it's an extra pause and a tap, just think it could be neater.

I like iMessage, but in Europe, most people use WhatsApp. Even iPhone-users like me use WhatsApp as well. For a large part because most people are constantly chatting inside group chats (one for family, one for friends, one for the sportsclub,...) and because WhatsApp is OS-agnostic, that's the platform that's always chosen - so non-Apple-users can also join the conversation.
iMessage has some other drawbacks, too: the fact that you can't access it on a Windows-pc (like the laptop my employer provides for me) is not handy. Why not implement an iMessage-tab in iCloud on the webbrowser? C'mon, Apple.
In terms of security I don't fear WhatsApp, really, as it uses the Signal encryption protocol.

The idea sounds awesome but the syncing is rather buggy. My iPad receives the messages like few hours late. So I like the idea but I am not sure that I can use it properly with those delays and bugs.
Messages app is certainly not perfect. On my Mac and iPhone, if the Mac is in use, it can receive messages up to 10 minutes before my phone.

Also, some messages never synch at all to the Mac. Something to do with AppleID versus phone number. That seems like an issue with Apple as my AppleID certainly has my phone number on the account.

Similarly, I have also gotten messages from an unknown user with a new Mac - synched via her AppleID and not associated with phone number in my address book. And that seems like a privacy/security failure, now I have her AppleID and the associated email address.

Definitely sounds like a bug. My iPad also receives the messages with delays. They might be more like 30 minutes than 10.

This sounds super weird. I wonder how they got into your computer.

Because AppleID is a email address, so that showed as sender rather than her name from my address book (which did not contain the email address used), or her phone number which wasn't synched to her new MacBook.
