I actually went to see the Recon at Dick Sporting Goods and wasn't impressed by it. I'm thinking of betting the North Face Hot Shot backpack.

Look at Tamrac
The Tamrac Aero or Evolution series packs.
I chose the Evo 8 which is awesome for camera gear and my 15" mbp. The Aero series 3375 & 85 are larger and a bit different, but still way cool.
The build quality on these packs is top notch, and they are not only functional, but they look good too.

ended up getting the level8 atlas backpack, really good cushioning and style the northface backpacks looked flimsy in comparison, so if you do intend on buying either of the 2 please check them out in person

anyway, I use a Belkin Slingbag but most of your books are gonna keep your mac safe. Try to limit how many book and what weight they are to carry with your macbook, it might break the screen.
