Lou Reed is the definition of cool.

I think you're confused about what 'cool' means. Both of those bands are usually viewed as great, but a little goofy.

Unless you're being totally cheeky, no-- I'm not confused about what "cool" means: It's a completely subjective term, and it's my opinion that these artists that appeal to me are "cool". You think Lou is cool; that's your opinion.:)

As for Daft Punk and Beastie Boys being regarded as "goofy", it's all good. I think they're more eccentric and genuine innovators, visually and sonically-- my definition of cool.

Dude it's all good. I've just been a bit of a prick today, because it was day one of me trying to quit smoking.

Sad to say day one turned to be a fail.

Sorry to hear about the smoking thing-- but it's just day one; tomorrow's another day! :)

In quitting smoking, there is no failed day one and another attempt on day two. There's only before quitting and after quitting. Either you quit, or you don't.

I would have said Bob Dylan..... until he released that horrid Christmas album.

He just lost me on that one.

I still say Dylan. Besides, the album was for charity. It wasn't, you know, actual ART.

Bauhaus are eternally cool. even when they do a song that sucks, they are STILL wonderfully cool.

An entire subculture sprang from a song they admittedly performed "tongue-in-cheek." You know which one I'm talking about. If you don't, then please turn in your Goth card. :D

I agree with the Depeche Mode and "No Martin Gore singing" comment.

I assume you have neither of Martin's "Counterfeit" solo EPs for that reason. ;) Nevertheless, when Martin's singing harmony behind Dave, it's not that bad. Besides, what else is Martin going to do, aside from writing virtually every DM song of course? The keyboard stuff has been handled mostly by producers (and hired hands on stage) since Alan left. Oh yeah, he can twang on the guitar during Enjoy The Silence-- forgot that one.

Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Mode; I lost interest after Songs Of Faith and Devotion, though.

The Cramps never lost their edge--not for a split second. They were so cool that most people haven't heard of them.

I think their appearance on Beavis & Butthead-- a clip of "Bikini Girls With Machine Guns", if I'm not mistaken-- helped with that aspect. I wonder what will happen to the band now that the lead singer's passed away.

My goth card is intact, still white-on-white and back on the rack. :)

I have the fist Counterfeit CD. It's so-so. Gore can write an amazing song, but his "Stevie Nicks singing through a fan" voice bugs me. Gahan has such a strong voice, and DM keeps getting better.

The death of Lux Interior was tragic, and his wife, guitarist Poison Ivy, has been invisible since then. I always wished they'd continue with Iggy Pop on vocals.

Martin does have a great gift for harmony, and he's great backing Dave up on vocals, I think the contrast of their tones together is supreme. His solo efforts are so cringe-worthy, so over-sentimentalized, it's sickening for me. And on a personal level, I really hate his poodle-do, so the sight of him combined with his singing is too much.

Funnily, I like Songs Of Faith and Devotion least. Not a fan of the bluesy tone. I think Dave is so much cooler now that he got the rockstar thing out of his system.

And how can I forget Iggy Pop?!??!!? He is supremely and eternally cool. It's amazing that a 50-something man can own skinny jeans and puts everyone half his age wearing them to shame.

I had never thought of Martin having a goat-voice, but now that you mentioned the Stevie comparison...

Am I the only one that thinks Hole's version of "Gold-Dust Woman" is superior in every way to Stevie Nick's original?

I would also like to add Courtney Love to the cool artist list... She's a hot mess now, but there's still something about Courtney.:D

Rolling Stones (duh)
Big Black

Seriously, though, Mick Jagger is actually cooler than any other rocker alive. I did not feel this way until I met him and, man, he just radiates electricity wherever he's at.

Green Day? Metallica? please, mere "dudes" in comparison.

For solo artist i must say Tupac, he had the message like no other.

And for a group/band...uh, i dont know really...

No, it most certainly was not actual art. I gasped in horror after hearing some of it.

Dylan is definitely up there in terms of coolness. Even after all these years touring, he still has a great stage presence. I've seen him live probably a dozen times, and he has never disappointed.

"I don't belieeeve you! You're a liarrrrrr!" Play f***ing loud!"

What message? Thug 4 Life?
:p

LOL. I never really had one to start with. I've been to a "Goth Night" or two, mainly in support of a couple of underground synthpop bands, but was never a part of The Scene.

Not to mention the heroin. I do like a couple of tracks from Playing The Angel, so things are indeed looking up for DM.

The KLF

Without getting too deep into their previous history, they sold more albums in '91 than any other British band, won a BRIT award, disturbed their audience by performing a trash metal version of their best-selling single, fired into the audience (albeit blanks), deleted their complete back catalogue the same day.

Just a couple? Which ones...? I thought that album was solid. Dave's voice has never sounded stronger, but still melancholic and all the yearning I love about them are there-- only now older, wiser...
