The sky is figuratively the limit when it comes to buying a nice mechanical watch.

I think Apple is going to sell a ton of watches.

In the long run, which is what really makes the most sense to count, a $5,000 watch isn't any more expensive than a bicycle.

Which is also a really expensive bicycle. Which the vast majority of people, even those who may own multiple bicycles and know quite a bit about them (like me,) consider far out of a reasonable price range when I don't have a use case where the extras a $5,000 bicycle grants. (I'm not a competitive racer, I don't do serious off-road biking, etc, etc.) My $800 bike was a splurge as a commuter - paid extra for lighter (but not truly exotic things like carbon fiber,) because I go over a hill, and for disc brakes because they help more in wet climates like where I live.

Movado, $1100. Been wearing it for over 10 years now.

I have a fairly old Fossil that I paid a couple hundred dollars for. My wife wanted to buy me a nicer watch a couple years ago when I graduated, but I told her to wait because I wanted an "iWatch". If I had purchased a watch, it probably would have been a Citizen Eco-Drive of some sort. Was looking at stuff like this:

http://www.citizenwatch.com/en-us/watches/watch-detail/?model=AT2240-51A

I've also always been a fan of these skeleton-type watches. Mechanical things have always fascinated me. When I was a kid I would always take apart stuff. My grandpa worked as an engineer at Vendo long before I was born, so he had all these cool vending machine parts that could sort coins, etc that he gave to me. I would also take apart my Nerf guns and put them back together (sometimes with limited success). But I mean just look at this thing:

I got this as a gift, I wanted to exchange it for an all black one, but I guess it would be rude so I just kept it.

$120 for a gold Seiko. I get asked fairly regularly if it's a Rolex. Great watch. I wouldn't go higher than $300 for anything other than the :apple:Watch - I'll pay up to $500 for one.

About $1,000 for a Hamilton. I've worn it pretty much every day for about 7 years now. Looks great; has sentimental value for me. If the Apple Watch is really useful, I foresee a tough call for me in the future. It will take a lot for me to switch watches. I don't think Mark 1 of the Apple Watch will make me do it. But I don't underestimate Apple and I fear that Mark 2 is going to be too useful and compelling for me pass on it.

I haven't worn a watch for watch purposes since I was in college when I needed to know when I needed to be in class. My work is a bit more... flexible plus with phones and what not, it is not hard to know the time.

Having said that, I have tried out various sport watches including a Suunto which I think was $500. In the end I decided it was too big for me and stopped wearing it. I'm watching the Apple Watch but battery life would be one of the major deciding factor and I'm only interested in the sport version.

I figure for watches in terms of 'style', it is mostly a man thing. Maybe because men don't feel comfortable wearing jewelry and it is an acceptable form of jewelry. I could be wrong and there could be lots of women out there that love watches, I just have never met any. And even with men, it seems to be more of a peer group thing as the few men I've met that are really into watches, also happen to mention watches owned by their friends... and I have zero interest in watches that are just watches so it isn't like I asked :)

bought my first high-end watches last year
$29k+tax Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 5127
$16k+tax Breguet (Reine de Naples, actually for the lady)
Rolex GMT Master 8K plus tax
Rolex Datejust

A diamond decorated junky Dior watch for the lady - 15k plus tax
Chanel j12 with Diamond - don't remember

A few old Cartier Pantheres. ..

You spent $29,000 on a watch?! A watch?! There is about a million better things you could have spent that money on. Watches seem like the biggest waste of money ever, to me. You must be rolling in it if you've got that much to spend on a watch, though. I'm sorry but no watch is worth that much money.

I think you need to take a good, long look at yourself if you're spending any more than £1,000 on a watch. Because it absolutely is not worth it and you're about to waste a lot of money. I absolutely cannot see the worth of buying an expensive watch. Unless you're very very rich and have money to throw away.

It's not about values, it's about knowing what a huge waste of money looks like. Companies will cash in on your ignorance.

Ever bought a new car? 'Huge waste of money" that "companies will cash in on your ignorance". All you need is point A to Point B transportation and a the least expensive reliable used car will do that.

Just look at YOUR signature. It is full of 'wasted' money.

It's amazing how many people are shocked by the price of fine timepieces. That's what they cost & everyone has the right to spend their hard earned money on what they please. There are people in other parts of the world that would laugh at us for spending the money we do on Apple products.

A car does way more than just tell the time. It's worth the money and you get what you pay for. You get significantly less than what you pay for in an expensive watch.

Suunto X9i
Suunto Core
and myriad of Casio Pathfinder watches

all around the 350 to 500 range.

The most I've ever spent on a watch was about $500 for a Citizen divers watch in Japan.

Although his Patek Philippe is a beautiful timepiece, it is a cheaper model. You get into the Grand Complication models and you will be spending much more. You can get a Ferrari for the cost of some of the higher end models. :D

Haha I don't come to macrumors for financial advice.
I don't know about you, but I think I'm doing just fine.

And yes, my Patek is among the cheapest Pateks you can buy (thay distinction goes to Aquanut for men's watches around 19000 I think).
Hopefully business goes well this year and I can get some nice complications into my collection.
