Today I went to Fresh Market sat at their great cafeteria to have a snack. Took out my 9.7 Pro to do some notes and write down some invention ideas as they come to me. Lo and behold No WIFI its 2016 in a posh Fresh Market very upscale I was enraged. No need to fret flipped on LTE cell Data and I am connected at 20-40Mbps.

My question is as wonderful as wifi is, people forget how limited the coverage is and even if you can see a Network in range often and quite appropriately so it is private and secured. Which got me thinking who in their right mind buys a WiFi only iPad Pro model ?

How do you justify a WiFi only purchase ?

I will only ever buy a wifi only iPad.

Was that way when I bought my iPad 2 and my next iPad will be the same. If I need Internet and none available, then my iPhone becomes the hotspot.

Why is that so surprising?

Ummm, save both $130 for the LTE iPad model and the cost of a second data plan and tether from my iPhone for $0 when wifi is not available?

The better question is who can justify paying for the LTE model and a separate data plan when you can turn on personal hotspot from your iPad without even taking out your iPhone?

Bought a 1st generation iPad with cellular. Used it once. I won't be making that mistake again. Whether or not you need cellular depends on your individual usage. Everywhere we wanted to use it outside the home had wifi.

I worry about phone battery whilst tethering and abroad charges (O2 does not allow me to use data abroad but three does) so for me cellular is worth it

Our other iPad is wifi only and I don't take it anywhere as a result. Decided to get the LTE version for a couple reasons.

1. LTE
2. GPS
3. TMobile having free 200mb and a 5gb for $10 prepaid plan
4. Picked up a pristine month old 12.9" iPP for $725.

At home I have wifi. At work I have wifi. In hotels and airports I have wifi. For the rare occasions that I don't have wifi and want to use my tablet, using my phone to create a hotspot suffices. An LTE tablet would be a waste of money for me.

My iPad is at my house 90-95% of the time. Then it's at church that has WiFi, or friends house etc... I don't need a cellular iPad.

Att doesn't allow those like myself on Unlimited Data plans to tether. Kind of ass backwards if you ask me but it is what it is.

At home you have WiFi, at work you have WiFi blocking all kinds of traffic, including real mail.
You have captive login pages that do not work, anything but insecure proxied http is slow if available.

If you use your phone as a hotspot, you are draining your battery and use your radio for data.
A independently billed data SIM is so much more convenient and probaly has higher traffic limits.

Take your iPad. Use it.
At home it joins your WiFi anyways.

Tether to iphone. ATT doubled my 3gb data I only was using 1gb of and without rollover I have some nuts amount monthly now- like 11gb. Plenty to tether off of without paying a dime more for the iPad or service.

I have had the iPad 2, the iPad 3, the iPad Air and the iPad mini. When I bought the Air, I splurged and got higher storage and the cellular model. I found the cellular model to not be worth the extra hardware cost. I rarely used it.

So with my new iPad Pro, I got wifi only. I can tether to my phone when needed, and most of my area is blanketed in Xfinity Wifi.

For those things I wouldn't use an app that requires constant internet access. Perhaps that can be your next invention. If I needed internet access I would tether from my phone, but for taking notes or writing down any kind of ideas I would use an app that doesn't require an internet connection and let it upload to the cloud later when I have wifi.

I did the same thing, I thought it would be a good thing to have, but never got in a situation where I needed data enough that I felt it was worth buying any. I might reconsider it if I ever decide to let an iPad Pro replace my laptop, but I think that tethering should still work just fine.

I see no point for buying the LTE version of the big iPad Pro, but for the 9.7 inch model, I can see how people want LTE connection, especially if there is no free WiFi or employer provided WiFi available around your daily routine.

I use my WiFi only iPad pro 9.7 at home and when out I use my LTE mini or iPhone. I considered selling the mini and getting the LTE pro, but it just isn't as convenient to carry and it would rarely leave home.

Funny you should mention that. All hotels I've been to recently have free wifi. However, the speed was so slow that if you actually wanted something useable, you'd need to upgrade at $10/day to their "Premium Wi-Fi".
That's how I feel too.

Plus I like to utilize iPad while traveling to save battery of my iPhone (in roaming these suckers usually spend more battery than usual). If I use tethering that would tax even more my iPhone battery.

Where I live it's an extra $5-10/month to add my iPad or hotspot MiFi to my iPhone data plan. When I travel, it's easier to get a cheap data only plan for tablets. Hopefully the embedded SIM will also help.

I always work even when traveling on vacation. It comes with the territory in my case. So the extra $130 is a cheap insurance if you plan to use it for 3-4 years ($2-3/month)

WiFi at work. (University)
WiFi at home with unlimited data with Verizon MiFi (through work).
WiFi when traveling with the MiFi.
WiFi at every local location I want to work at.
And, finally, I could always tether to my phone. (ATT)
I think I have things covered.

I did get an LTE iPad Pro, and find I use it sometimes (I signed up for T-Mobile free 200 mb / month plan, and have used it up only once). But I wouldn't question other people getting wifi only -- there are many reasons why that makes sense, as shown by the many responses in this thread, but frankly, I knew all those reasons without having to ask!

Well prior to my iPad Pro 12.9, I would travel with my 15" MBP. I figured since I managed to get through life with my MBP that only has wifi that my 12.9 Pro would be fine as wifi only as well.

With that said my iPads have been both wifi and other times cellular, most of the time I didn't use the cellular anyway. However with the portability of the 9.7 and the GPS and the ability to turn on cellular since I can not use my iPhone as a hotspot I did order my 9.7 Pro as a LTE model.

Yes I often become engraged at Fresh Market. Their prices are too high and their sushi is too good.

It's really a "to each his/her own" kinda thing, and it all depends on how you use it. My iPad 2 and 3 were wifi-only models, but the Air, Air 2 and not the 9.7 Pro all have been LTE.

Tethering to my phone is nice, but it drains battery fast, heats up my phone more than I care for, and I've been in a rough spot where I misplaced my phone and had a hard time using Find My iPhone... because my then-WiFi iPad had nothing to connect to. So for me the added price is worth it.

I have an iPad Air 2 wifi only that stays home 95% of the time. I only take it with me when I need to & know that there is wifi where I'm going. I also take it with me when I travel while waiting at the airport using their free wifi.

FYI, Minneapolis (MSP) has the worst free wifi ever. This is the only airport I have problems connecting to. Must be because of all the iPads they have.

1:1 seat to ipad ratio... literally lol.

Most places I go to have free wifi, airports have wifi, hotels have wifi...

And when I don't have wifi - I read from kindle app or look at PDFs. Or just use my phone if I need to look something up.

Very rarely have I felt lacking, and even then - it's certainly not worth paying for cellular..
