You don't seem to like either Macs or iOS devices. So why are you even on this message board?
Because I happen to own one of the apple device. But then again, why do you even give a flying **** about it?

They can't for everything and everyone. But the conventional computer could eventually become marginalized as devices like tablets, smartphones, and SmartTVs continue to improve in performance and functionality.
Conventional personal computer isn't going anywhere. Nor is it gonna be replaced by a tablet.

I care because you tried to dismiss my whole statement on the flimsy basis that I (you incorrectly assumed) only use a product which you have a clear bias against (while probably having little to no actual experience with said product).

iPad usage depend how you want honey. :p
I love laptop rather than ipad.

So do I, but since getting an iPad2 as a gift I find that I pick it up more often than my Macbook Pro simply because it is so easy. Typing on it is more tedious than typing on my Macbook but is doable. I've been a bit disabled for the last few months due to pulmonary embolisms, and it is a little odd sitting in my living room with my Macbook Pro in front of me, my iPad2 on the table next to me and my iPod Touch either in my pocket or also on that table and know that I can check my email or browse the web on any of them. All with my win7 pc in the other room mostly gathering dust. It lives only because my Mac can't access my scanner and grunt work like ripping DVD's is too dull to bother my Macbook with.

I have that specific combo, but I used to think the same way as you.

I use the MacBook Air for Xcode and other programming (I study CS) and the iPad for light surfing, reading and watching video. I don't use my iPad for listening to music, I keep the audio on my iPhone instead. The iPhone serves as phone, iPod and mobile wifi hotspot (tethering iPhone -> iPad / MBAir).

I went back and forth forever for every about getting an iPad, iPhone, and MBA. At first I tried the iPad plus "dumb phone" with the MBA for school, but one too many times I wanted to run out the house with just my phone and was stuck when I wanted to look something up or get directions. I have all three and I like having all three. It's expensive, but I've resigned myself to the fact that's it's what I want and there's nothing wrong with that. (This is so first world by the way ..lol)

I've been looking into getting an ipad 2, but I'm not sure I see the point of it..What do you guys do with yours?

Simple: everything (see my signature...)

Bottom line is that everyone's personal usage scenario is just that - personal. I don't edit video or do other computationally heavy tasks. And on the other hand with the continued evolution of iOS and some truly amazing apps (VueScan is a great one I picked up recently) I find there is less and less that I can't do with only an iPad.

For me, the question would be...what's the point of a MBP?

Nice blog :) Pretty informative.

I wondered the same thing for myself as I have a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, iPod touch, and iPhone. I got my wife one because she only uses her laptop for browsing the internet and maybe responding to emails. She broke her last laptop and kept saying she wanted a Mac. No way I was paying that just for internet and email so I got her an iPad 2. She uses it daily and after playing around on it myself the bigger screen size and easier portability has me now looking for one.

I originally had a PC and an iPhone and then got an iPad. Then I got an MBP and naturally gravitated to the MBP...It's almost a year later and I still almost never reach for the iPad. I'm trying to find uses for it again.

I use my iPad for:

- Mobile computing (replaced laptop)
- Remote controller for home/media network
- Screen and keyboard for headless server
- Entertainment hub (music, games, video)
- Information terminal (weather, news, stocks)

Probably my most used appliance :)

Nice blog :) Pretty informative.

This blog is now in my daily reading list.

For those questioning the iPad here are a couple of reasons. It is lighter than a laptop computer. This becomes important for those of us with arthritis, especially in both shoulders. :(

With a BT keyboard, it can do nearly as much as a laptop save for Flash based content or special needs.

All the other reasons cited so far. Still looking for good applications/services that I can trust for the iPad to server as a screen/keyboard for a headless server. Suggestions?

Take care,

Gonna check out your blog!

Thanks a bunch guys.

On the weight issue, I couldn't agree more. It's pretty much a one way ticket though - once you shed pounds from that shoulder bag, it's kind of impossible to go back! Sometimes that gets in the way. Like, I've been eyeing one of those micro 4:3 cameras but....between the bulk and the weight, and the "mostly good enough" camera in the iPhone, I just can't be bothered. (I still might buy one bc that's how I roll, but carrying it...yeesh).

I don't have any recommendations for the headless server idea, though have you checked out the many VNC apps? I don't use one bc my Dropbox/dropDAV/iWork 'file system' works well enough for my purposes. But the fans of each of the major ones tend to be pretty loud proponents of whichever VNC app they've chosen. They may be worth a look.

Same with the new OnLive office set up. (CloudOn is way too laggy for anything other than occasional use). My account was finally activated so I'll be using it in the coming days and posting a writeup soon.

Tell me about it. My Canon 20D does not get used much anymore because of weight and bulk.

My issue with any VNC solution is opening my system up. I want something that is cost effective and only operates within the WiFi/Network of the house and does not attempt to broadcast to the world. Have not searched too hard because it is not a BIG issue for me. Mostly want it for those Flash based sites or special needs.

Waiting to see what you think of OnLive.

Ah interesting. Yeah I'm not so much of a privacy hound though I will probably regret it. I fact dropDAV is shunned by many bc it's a third party service that could conceivably do, or allow a hacker to do, bad things with your Dropbox files.

What's the point? Here's my take on Apple's reasons.

1) Make another high profit revenue stream.

2) Create another device to brag about.

3) Get people to buy into their closed Eco-system.

4) Sell more expensive apps.

5) Sell a device to those who really don't need a computer.

6) Perpetuate their image as a leading innovator.

7) Expand Apple's user base.

That said, I bought one out of curiosity although I had no intention of it replacing any of my computers.

It has Pro's & Con's just like anything else. As an alternate, occasional use device, it works ok for me.

You may not care for it that much, but my iPad 2 is by far the greatest device I've ever owned.

To address points 1, 4...

Even Tim Cook believes that the iPad will eventually cannibalize consumer Mac sales. Entry level iPad price: $499, entry level Mac notebook: $999. The Mac is far more profitable, but the iPad has better volume.

Apps on the iPad are much cheaper then apps on the Mac, by a lot!

I use my iPad as a note pad to put together my novel instead of wasting paper, plus there are a lot of get app for helping with writing novels.

My iPad2 has almost completely replaced my Macbook Pro since I discovered LastPass Tab. That is one really sweet addition to the iPad.
