I have on idea that could work. Take this already-posted pic as an example:

Now imagine this: once you had a notification, the Carrier name would periodically (every 2 seconds or so) move, in a cube-like fashion, and give space to the notifications (respective icon with a number near). After 2 seconds, those notifications would also disappear in a cube-like fashion, and give space to the carrier logo.

For those asking what the cube-like fashion moving is, I'm talking about one similar to what happens on the white bar when you get a notification.

The top bar and screen isn't the only form of notification. If you've somehow managed to ignore the banner and lock screen and, for example, get a text you'll still get that red counter over your text icon saying how many unread you have. I guess you ignored that too though.

It's not just about text messages. Its about all apps.
In my opinion, what you said doesn't make the notification system any more efficient than what it was in 4.x.

I was wondering why they didn't just add icons in the status bar, but honestly I think Apple is trying that hard to not be like other mobile systems that they won't do it. A little envelope or speech bubble in the status bar is extremely unobtrusive and easy to decipher but I don't see Apple ever doing it. I hope they do one day. I think those obvious notifiers plus the new notification center is the perfect notification combo but that's just my two cents.
