I think the fact that there are very few iMacs in stock in stores is not a rumor

How do you know this?

I checked here in the LA area and Best Buy, Apple ;), Frys, etc. has them as does New Egg, Amazon, etc. Obviously I don't know how many are in the stores, but everyone that carries the iMacs seems to have them to sell.

There is a report, from last week, that graphic cards can barely cope with resolution in rMBP. Do we have graphic card for desktop that can handle retina resolution on 21.5'' or 27'' display? I don't think so.

This. No chance of a retina iMac this year.

My vision on how the redesigned retina iMac (2013) will look: Imagine the current iMac, but switch out the foot to a box resembling the Mac Mini, containing, with it's own cooling, a beastly graphics card for all those pixels. ^^

With a 680 in there. Yum.

Not a bad idea at all. I imagine the chin could go if the gfx card goes in the stand, thus not looking much more bulky. However the "stand" would have to be longer.. desktop cards don't really fit in something the size of the Mac Mini I think? Noise for gfx card cooling might be a problem though, seeing as there is not lots of space to absorb it? ps: also the "stand" might be too hot no? On the iMac it's sort of hidden behind the screen, where most people would have a wall.

That stores are getting very few or are completely out, is a fact. In Norway almost every store is out of stock - without any date for restock. I would find it weird if apple is gonna keep it like this for the next 3 months. But then again, nothing reqlly surprises me anymore with apple. maybe they won't update it for another 6 months just to give it a tiny spec bump.

I want retina but how is apple gonna power it?

The sources also noted that Apple plans to expand Retina Display into all the product lines, meaning that the new iMac will have a high chance of featuring Retina Display; however, the rumors are not confirmed by Apple.
All desktop pictures in Mountain Lion Developer Preview 4 have a resolution of 3200x2000@300ppi. I see no device with this resolution on Apples website, so i think that the new "retina" iMac has a resolution of 3200x1800 (16:9) pixels. Newer GPUs (IGP or discrete) run much cooler, so i see no problem here.

Since a retina display for the new imacs is probably going to be very very expansive, has anybody considered yet, that there are also going to be two version new macs? Just like macbooks, a regular updated version plus a new retina imac?!
For me that would make a lot of sense.

Best wishes from germany..;-)

Been suggested several times and something I've been thinking about a bit. The question would then be, how large would they go. A couple of days ago Forbes Magazine calculated that a 17" retina display would add $700 to the cost of the unit (iMac or MacBook) and that prices rise exponentially with screen size after that. So, perhaps we see a premium model iMac with Retina display this year, but with a small screen and a large price.

Hey more power to Apple if it succeeds via high sales for the rMBP. I just think the pricepoint is rediculous high for a laptop. 90% of all other laptops are priced below $500, indicating that most consumers want a lower end laptop to surf the web.

Yes, well, if you haven't figured out already, that isn't quite the target demographic for the rMBP.

would that 3200x1800 be on the 27 inch imac?

Very good point. Couple this knowledge with the fact that only a few years ago, when apple switched to 21.5 & 27 inch form factors, the panels were top of the line. The cost was somewhere in the order of $1000 US for the panel alone in those units. That price has come down a good amount since then so having a panel in again in that price range only makes sense. Maybe they even do a single model with retina and lower the prices on the other "standard" units.

So the question becomes, what size would this panel be? I would speculate that 27 would be too high for cost reasons and a 21.5 may be too small to fit in an acceptable gpu to power those pixels. So maybe a 23-24? They have the old chassis design to work with and it gives a significant amount of real estate more than the 21.5. Also it's a good deal smaller than the 27" for cost reasons. It just seems like a good middle point. Plus I know many around here feel like 24 is the sweet spot.

would that 3200x1800 be on the 27 inch imac?
Sure, because this is the iMac with the highest resolution (27" 2560x1440 today) and i think they do not include 3200x2000@300 ppi desktop pictures in Mountain Lion Developer Preview 4, if the 21.5" "retina" iMac has a resolution of 3200x1800 pixels and the 27" has something higher. I think we will see the new iMacs, Mountain Lion and Lion 10.7.5 on the same day.

has digitimes been reliable in the past?.. it doesnt make sense to me why they would skip the back to school sales and retina display??? i want retina but how is apple gonna power it ??? .. what do you guys think

It makes some sense ... they could announce the iMac in July with OS ML but ship it "around" October ... ugh ... hope that's not the case ... BUT, the only reason to hold the spec bump other than the GPU (which is available now) is to include a retina display on one of the models. So, let's put it all together. The new MPB retina has some issues pushing pixels with its GPU, no way it could handle a 20+ inch screen, so, it would make sense to hold the release until the right GPU was available to ship with larger retina displays, also add in that ML will be optimized for retina ... could be .. but, who the frak really knows ...

I get the feeling that Apple's desktop division is falling apart at the seems since Steve Jobs passed. Nothing but bad or no news lately.

Er, it was Jobs who predicted that ultimately 90% of Apple's Mac business would be laptops. Desktops have been sidelined for years.
