Just like with every other computer, there's going to be some people that love it and some people that don't. I've seen threads here about "Why does everyone hate the 13" MBP?" even though it's Apple's bestselling notebook computer. If the retina MBP is right for you, don't worry about what everyone else thinks.

At the same time, it's ridiculous to think that the people being vocal about problems or concerns are all people that can't afford to buy one. At this point, there are some very legitimate concerns about how the retina MBP fits into the workflow for a lot of professionals. Right now, it's very much ahead of its time. Programs need time to catch up. Other technology needs time to catch up. People need to figure out how to make it work in the businesses that they're in. It doesn't mean they hate it. It means that it's either not right for them or that it needs time to become more mainstream. Don't take it personally. There's no one computer that's right for everyone.

People like to rationalize their decision, so they bitch about it if they didn't buy it, and they make new threads bitching about people bitching about it if they did buy it.

Conversely, people who buy it stretch the truth about performance to rationalize their decision.

Forums like this are basically chalk-full of cognitive dissonance and people rationalizing their decisions instead of being objective in their contributions :(

I wasted so much time reading most of the comments to that AnandTech article. I partly blame people for being idiots and not reading the source material, but I also blame the MacRumors admin who made a semi-alarmist front page post about the single sticking point Anand made out of his glowingly positive review.

But yes, there are a lot of people who hate it because it's convenient and self-serving to do so when you either cannot afford it or are not in the market. There are some who are still stuck on the upgrade and reparability of it... even of the majority of THOSE people never upgrade their computers anyway. When you take away *anything*, it's all about the perception of loss, whether you actually lost anything that matters to you or not.

If you don't like it, don't buy it - simple enough.
I'm afraid the solution will one day be more dire than this.

When *all* macs are sealed and you're stuck with whatever RAM and SSD you chose at the time of purchase then some/many might just move on to another platform. (At least more "pros").

I agree. Having said that, I bought the cMBP and it's the best machine ever and the rMBP sux...lol.

Bad things make people pay more attention. You don't usually see the front page of the newspaper full of good news like, "Man withdraws money late at night - not mugged".

why do u worry if people hate it or not?

Because it's really annoying to go into any thread about the Retina MacBook Pro and then have to sift through eight posts about the lag issue even if it's completely unrelated to the original question.

I think people here are less irritated by the fact that some people hate it as much as they're irritated by the number of posts about the 'issue'.

Conversely, people who buy it stretch the truth about performance to rationalize their decision.

Which is why I posted videos demonstrating basic UI features to let people decide whether or not there's a performance issue for themselves, rather than just saying 'it doesn't lag' or 'it lags', which is a completely subjective opinion.

I personally love the rMBP. Yes it is a bit pricey, but what other laptop has the same pixel density? None, rMBP has almost double the density than its closest competitor, not to mention its ultra thin form factor.

I'm not so sure why so many people feels like hating on the rMBP. If you don't like it, don't buy it - simple enough.

It's basic sociology & psychology. Certain people can't adapt well to change. The Air was a completely new model so no one felt threatened. The RMBP OTOH is a Mac Book Pro -- the future of MBPs. It's radically different & when people are unable to "Think Different" they use all sorts of ugly ways to compensate.

Eventually we all have to either adapt or leave Mac OS. I think the majority of consumers will pick the former. Apparently Apple does to. I'm not wild about not being able to replace a drive myself but I like Macs so worth the trade.

Also, specifically about the Retina screen. It's gorgeous WITH compatible s/w but hideous otherwise. It's like that Seinfeld ep. where the girl he's dating is a 10 in day light but scary looking a night. Once more s/w comes out its going to be a must have just like on the iPhone & iPad.

Actually, while I don't hate the rMBP at all, I *am* kind of hating on the people who are pushing it as the greatest thing since sliced bread and calling it things like the "future of MBPs".

When actually, it's filling in a gap in their product line and isn't the future of MBPs at all. Sure, there's a definite demand out there for something more powerful than a MBA, but which doesn't have all the bells and whistles (and thus their weight) of the MBP. The rMBP fits that niche nicely, and let them put in a larger battery so they could actually power a Retina screen, which they couldn't do in the normal MBP.

But the standard MBP, with all it's bells and whistles, is still a necessary niche - the complete desktop replacement device. There's plenty of demand for a machine like that, and that demand isn't going to go away any time soon. It has a long and bright future ahead of it just as the rMBP does. Neither one is the "future of MBPs" -- they're both equally valid paths.

After all, sometimes "Thinking Different" means to actually provide solutions for ALL your customers - not just the ones who want change for change's sake.

I'm not sure what you mean by that statement. I love change and have been an early adaptor my whole life. I had a computer at home (late 70's when only a handful of people did) and one of the first commercial home pcs. I had the first LED watch (replaced the battery monthly), first voice synthesized watch (took 4 hearing aid batteries), etc. I also can't wait to get an all electric car. But the one thing I learned "growing up" is that there is a right time to buy into a new technology. The all electric car isn't there yet and the rMBP isn't there either.

Agreed 100%

This is one of the most gorgeous computers to surf the internet on. I like to actually surf now. It is gorgeous. If you can afford it, than there should not be a single complaint!

Pack of rabid Apple fanatics before June 11 2012:
Rabble rabble rabble, the things that makes the MBP "pro" are its power and user upgradeability. Apple will never release a "pro" with soldered RAM and a proprietary SSD, that's for poor people who have to buy Airs, rabble rabble rabble. Anyone who says different is jealous of how rich I am and doesn't know how to Think Different ™.

No hate for the rMBP (amazing bit of kit); some rMBP owners on the other hand...

You have been around the site for a while, this is stock standard response to a new Apple product.

I think it would be wrong if everyone just loved it! Innovation is good, I am glad people do not like certain things about it, as it will mean an even better model in the future.

What apple should've done is continue making a standard unibody mbp 15 with the optical drive taken out, blade ssd as the rMBP, standard hdd or 2nd standard size ssd as an option, larger battery as optical drive is no longer there, asymmetrical fans for cooling, and of course removable battery and ram. Finally both the hires and retina display as an option. Meanwhile, the current disposable rMBP should've been the MBA 15 with retina.

There is hate because like most forums....

Ppl don't use the search function
Some ppl think they are too smart for others
Others think they are more important then others
We have fanboys and we have haters especially with a brand like apple
Sarcasm does not translate well in type...

I'm sure there are more.

amazing

I just got macbook retina after upgrading from a 13' MBP and all I can say is it's amazing.

Thin, portable, beautiful screen, low fan noise, VERY impressive speakers (def. wasn't expecting it to be that good) great boot up time for the computer and launching of applications.

It's simple, they can't afford it so they trash it. Before apple released the price people were going crazy for it.

SSD, Retina Screen, and i7 processor alone make up majority of the price. It's around the price you should expect, granted apple products are usually more expensive so I don't understand why people are shocked.

I agree with this. Deciding which machine to replace my 2007 15" MBP has been frustrating.

My ideal machine would be the "traditional" MBP form factor with large SSD + optical drive + retina display. Doesn't exist.

In the end, what I value most is a crisp, high-resolution display. I realize I really don't need that much hard drive space (what on Earth do people keep on their primary hard drive, anyway?). I have been using my old MBP with 4GB RAM for a few years (since upgrading myself) and it was glacially slow to process my D700 RAW files in Aperture and fan / hard drive noise was driving me insane.

Two weeks ago, I bought a 13" off-the-shelf MBP and returned it two days later. Tiny screen, old eyes.

I grabbed a 2.3Ghz rMBP @ Best Buy last week and plan to take advantage of the 30-day return policy if I decide this isn't my "answer." I love this display. There is no spinning hard drive, and -- so far, I have never heard the whir of a fan.

I think most people were hoping they could have it ALL, and I think if I were relying on this for business -- I would probably be cranky, too.

Meeting customer expectation

Im one of those who is returning my rmbp. I didn't get whati was expecting from a 2800€ computer. For me the lag issue was something really annoying. Its not only in safari but also when reading pdf documents for example. It makes the reading experience really bad. Maybe they fix this with updates but for now this computer isn't for me. I think some of the hate comes from the dissapointmemt of waiting like a 4 year old is waiting for x-mas and then don't get what you were expecting. But thats just me and i'm glad most of you love your new rmbp.

Typical Apple fanboy response to anyone who has something negative to say about an Apple product.
^ This.
There's some seriously embarrassing "I've got more money than you" fanboyism going on. I'm guessing a computer is the most expensive thing they've ever bought; their little brains are going to melt when they try to get a mortgage to buy a house.

Quoting because I couldn't have put it better myself.
