Whats your Apple TV delivery date?

I ordered mine 5 minutes ago. Same delivery time as everyone else who ordered at the 5 am launch. IOW, 16 hours later, and it still the same time. Not that big of a demand apparently

When you look at, it really doesn’t offer too much over the current for most people. HDMI 2.1 for the 120 true refresh rate (motion enhancement isn’t the same thing) isn’t very common yet and not on lower cost 4K TVs that are dominating the market. I’d wager your average consumer doesn’t know the benefits of hdmi 2.1. I have a VRR 2.1 TV, but only for my new consoles otherwise I’d be fine watching streaming at 24 or 60 fps, maybe even prefer it

I guess if you play a lot of Apple Arcade you would see some improvements.

So unless you have a TV that can leverage the benefits offered on the new appletv it won’t make a significant difference.

For now, the benefits appear to be limited to:
  • High Frame Rate HDR (60 fps in 4K)
  • VP9 Profile 2 Level 5.1 (YouTube in HDR 4K 60 fps vs. SDR 4K 30 fps)
  • Wi-Fi 6 vs. Wi-Fi 5
  • Thread
  • HDMI 2.1 vs. HDMI 2.0, judder/lag-free gaming and instantly switching frame rates
  • Bundled with the new Remote
The new model is also better for future proofing, as Apple may add certain new features only to the newest model.

I sold my old Apple TV 4K for $110. Instead of spending $59 for the new remote, I am effectively upgrading to new Apple TV 4K for free (32GB at $169 and 64GB at $189 from Costco).

60hz is supported by current Apple TV in HDR. 30 for Dolby. But a lot of film makers don't want content at 60hz to begin with, much less 120hz. But again, your TV has to support Dolby Atmos and HDR 10 (which a lot do). Watching movies at 120hz isn't something I've quite adopted yet.

From what I know, YouTube's limitation is not hardware, it's software. VP9 and VP9.2 isn't within Apple's media framework. I haven't read that Apple intends to change that for their new version? Maybe so? That'd be awesome.

Wi-Fi6 is a nice to have future proof, but 5 streams fast enough to deliver pretty much any content now.

HDMI 2.1, yeah that's again great for future proofing, but most TVs sold today are not compatible. This will change as the 2.1 sets get cheaper. But your typical buyer is more willing to spend 500 for a 65 4K than a 49 inch 2.1 HDMI (cheapest set i could find on BB with true 120hz). I have a 2.1 TV, but only because I wanted to leverage my PS5 and Xbox Series X to their fullest.

New remote is welcome!

I too am upgrading, partially because I have a set that will support it, and like you I was able to fetch a decent price for my old 4K. If I didn't have a TV that would take advantage of the new hardware to it's fullest, I would not be upgrading. So yes the new AppleTV is nice upgrade, but not for everyone.

Yes, the 5th generation Apple TV 4K with A10X can decode H.264 and H.265 codecs, with HDR (HDR10 or Dolby Vision) and up to 4K 30 fps (or 1440p 60 fps). It is not capable of decoding VP9 codec with HDR, as VP9 requires A11 for VP9 Profile 2 (HDR) and A12 for 4K 60 fps.

As for 60 fps contents, yes, most movies and TV series are filmed in 24 fps for artistic reason (there are few exceptions like The Hobbits trilogy in 48 fps and Gemini Man in 60 fps).

Some sporting events are shot and sometimes streamed at 60 fps (e.g., ESPN+ and MLB.TV), although 4K is still a rarity. This will eventually change, and 6th generation Apple TV with A12 can decode H.264, H.265, and VP9 in HDR and 4K up to 60 fps.

YouTube for iOS (iPhone and iPad) already support decoding VP9 in HDR and 60 fps 4K, provided you have A12 or newer. YouTube for tvOS may require an update, but Apple TV 4K product page already mentions this YouTube capability.

My 2019 TV (LG B9) has HDMI 2.1, so I am glad to buy Apple TV 4K that can utilize it. Quick Media Switching (immediately switching frame rates) should speed up video playback.

All in all, new Apple TV 4K is certainly not the major upgrade many of us were hoping for. But I am glad it remains in the line up with spec refresh and much requested redesigned remote control.

Hey Friends,

I overslept and missed the 5 am launch of the Apple tv. I woke up at 6 am and put the order in showing an estimated delivery of May 21 - May 27 by Express Delivery. Did I make the cut?

Ryan
Got mine already. Just kidding...couldn't resist.

I know! Sad 😞, was getting excited with all these iPads moving to preparing to shipped and now shipped for some lucky people.

Didn’t the iPads have a date? Whereas TVs were a window?
I would have liked it for this weekend but realistically I was just hoping to get it before June.

Yeah I think your right, I was given a week window from the 21st of May when I ordered. I think a lot of us were hoping for a 21st delivery date though. Might still happen, you never know.

The consensus seems to be that Apple were sitting on these things for over a year due to the pandemic. However it makes me wonder why it’s taking them until late May to get them shipped out.

Mine says 27th but I am still crossing my fingers for the 21st delivery date - I'm home alone without the kids that weekend so would be nice to have a new toy to play with!!!

Consensus from where? Seems strange they would want to pay storage on devices that would have been getting a lot of use during lockdowns.

Ordered within minutes of it being available. Got a delivery window between the 21 and 28th of may. Apple Store apps says the 28th. Will be kind of disappointed if that’s the case.

My delivery window is also May 21-May 27. Ordered right when it became available. Will be curious to see when ours start changing to Preparing to Ship, and where they are actually being shipped from.

I ordered around an hour after it was available.

It started with arriving June 10 when ordered. Then it moved to May 28 - 3 June after couple of days. this week it moved up to may 26 - 2 june

Currently showing May 24-28 window for a 32GB model that was ordered in the first 24 hours. The 2 remotes are showing June 2-9 window.

I think something's about to happen guys!!! :D

The progress bar on my May 28-June 3 expected delivery just changed from processing BACK to order placed, with this in the ribbon of the page:

Only reason that Apple would change the status to "your order can't be changed at this time" is because they're about to ship them. :). (can't be cancelled once it ships)

And, yes, a little envious of all of the Americans that got May 21 as their ETA, when they ordered AFTER I did. Apple just doesn't love Canada that much. (ordered at 6AM PT). (Canada's orders usually come on the same flights from China as the US, so have to be sorted there first).

Same thing just happened to me.

Won’t even let me view my order right now. Something might be happening indeed!

I did notice that Amazon has it as releasing on the 27th.
