I'm currently watching the PBS special Rx for Survival: A Global Health Challenge. The special brought up the subject of obesity in America and the health risks. One of the topics was a person's body mass index.

http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/calc-bmi.htm

I know I'm being a wussy for not telling you guys my BMI index.
What's your BMI index?

6'1", 175lbs. 23.1

Wow. I really need to exercise more. I'm 1.9 away from overweight. Expecially since I'm really like 6' 3/4" and like 177lbs...

22.5  ... What does that mean? (I know what it is, but why does it matter? Is higher bad for you? Or lower?)

Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Normal
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and Above Obese

I thought BMI was discounted by some scientologists a while ago.

Tom Cruise has discredited it?

It seems a little biased towards shorter people to me. I'm reasonably thin, I think, and only 1.9 from "overwieght."

So, Lacero, what's your BMI?

Com'on. Don't be shy... Remember, 65% of the US is overweight... Your BMI can't be too much worse. ;)

Lacero. I was watching the same show, by the way. Interesting stuff. The stories about Botswana's efforts to combat AIDS/HIV were awesome. I wish I could get a job there helping out.

It's not accurate. Mine is 24.4, but I'm 6'3" 195# with an athletic build. I don't have any body fat, so this thing is off.

The problem is it doesn't take into account build or conditioning. I'm lower than you, but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that I'm in worse shape and have more excess fat.

20.1 according to this...

but i know i have very little body fat. which this doesn't factor in...

23.7! Yeah, I'm like 5'10" and 165. I need to exercise more. If I was more muscular, then my weight would be OK, but I'm not

Many people discredit it. I mean, are they gonna apply the same BMI for little Japanese people as they are for tall Dutch folk? It doesn't make sense, and this is why nobody really takes it seriously.

BTW:

Abstract..... 5'10", 169 lbs, BMI = 24.1

I'm quite fit and healthy, and yet I'm 0.9 points away from being overweight, according to them. Oh, and I'm Chinese, so with their upcoming BMI Index for Asians, I'd probably have a BMI of 72.

*starts flexing*

They just can't handle the fact that I have more muscle in my eyebrows than those scientists do in their entire pectoral, lats, delts, tri, and bicep regions!

I won't say, since it varies. ;)

BMI doesn't measure fat since some people have more muscle weight. I guess it's a good indicator of overall health, especially if people are not muscular as me.

Some time ago it was "Pinch An Inch".
Looks like less than an inch to me. ;)

BMI is total ********. I am 5'10, 165, and I am fine, but my friend who is 5'9, about 186lbs, but is ripped and big, great shape, is considered overweight.

Hmmm...total bs

31...nice...I have a high muscle mass, but a lot of body fat too. Oh well, must resist eating more chips and salsa...:D
