Like anything else, it's just a scale - a guide. I say people should use it as a reference, not as the Bible. ;)

Amen to that!

If you have the time/patience to read all the previous pages, it's quite apparent that the BMI index is only one simple (and limited) tool to help people somewhat gauge their health.

That's why if you start exercising/working out to lose weight and you only go by your scale, at a given point you might be dismayed to find that after losing some weight, you've suddenly gained a bit.

I actually did, and I know.

I just had to add my .02 to the group ;)

23.1

I'm in my 'holiday mode' for taking in tons and dealing with it later. I'm up a solid 10 lbs. since late October simply because there is more food around the house and it's good food compared to what I stir up at uni. I eat a lot over holidays when I'm home, then go back to school and hit the gym and protein shakes and drop like a fly.

I'll have to see how this tracks in the coming months. When I left uni last they had docs from the local hospital giving body fat tests with the 9-point pinch method ( ) and I was just into the double digits at 12%, so I'm not worried what no stinkin' BMI is telling me :p

Numbers are meaningless: 23.3

Regaurdless of what the number is we should all eat healthy and stay active. Drink more (purified) water!

Remember when plump = wealth/beauty?

Message to the girls - Don't buy into the hype ... please keep your curves! Skinny does not equal healthy. :D

Eating healthy, staying active, and drinking a lot of water are all great peices of advice.

Aside: The snow falling here is b-e-a-utiful! I love snow, especially these ultra-large flakes falling now....so peaceful :)

Not only did plump imply wealth/beauty, pale skin and fragile frames did as well. Today it seems the darker tan you have and the ripped body are signs of leisure and success (apparently as you have more time to workout and tan, you must be success to have said time or something). Funny how things like that change.

Riiiiiight, I suppose if a slender person were to have a rich calcium diet since young till present would not contribute to acquiring osteoporosis in they old age.

It's all part of a balanced diet, people. ;) :)

A balanced diet helps, but as you age osteoblasts become less active and numerous. Weight-bearing activity like jogging makes use of the calcium in your diet by stimulating bone growth. If you don't use it, you lose it, no matter how much calcium you are getting - and more petite individuals have less to lose before their bones become critically weakened. The majority of hip fractures in the elderly is due to bones weakened by resorption due to inactivity. If you sit in an easy chair instead of walking around you will lose a lot of bone mass at an age where your body can no longer replace it very quickly.
