Facebook gets a lot of hate on these boards, but we should also remember that this board is a bubble. FB alone has over 1.8 Billion daily active users, and almost 3B monthly.

You may read about Signal's boost in downloads, but what kind of dent was actually made?

FB's privacy intrusions are not new, yet they continue to grow. Most people simply don't care.
Enough of a dent for them trying to clarify and explain things.

Another red faces moment for Zuck. Keep em coming. The more we encourage people to realise the mammoth amount if information FB gathers on people the better. Then get them to delete their accounts.

I think I paid for WhatsApp years ago. Wonder if I could be exempted 😂

In any case, I also downloaded Signal and Telegram among a bunch of others years back too. I'll happily just see which of my friends migrate to those platforms and use them accordingly.

Do we really need to trust them again after trust was broken. WhatsApp has proved monopoly is harmful.

Threema is another great app, but I doubt it has the numbers at the moment that Telegram and Signal do because of the bold decision by the company to charge for their product instead of selling their users like WhatsApp and Facebook. So, Telegram and Signal are better choices to suggest to people who are already wary of bidding adieu to WhatsApp considering those are free apps.

1. telegram do not start without haveng access to all your contacts which is a nogo (for all your friends and business partners)
2. telegram is a service form russia located in dubai,
please correct me when i am wrong.
None is bad. I am from Russia too, it doesn’t make me bad by default.

Prefer Telegram, it just works

Just shows a lot of lemmings don’t care about how big tech uses them as commodities, I mean where else can they post photos of their food and amazing lives other than FB and IG?

Prior to the huge influx of users never had issues. I’ll stick with signal.

Will keep testing it. If it will stabilize - great. For now I cannot rely on it. Would not be able to contact people yesterday had it been my single option

And to issue a full front page ad in one of the the biggest newspapers in India explaining how they care about our privacy. They are hemorrhaging users in India, their biggest market at over 340 million users at last count.

I hope everyone realizes a paid subscription service is ultimately going to be the answer. Much better Pay as you go. There is no way for Facebook to make money in these services by giving them free. The only way is advertising. Google was lucky with YouTube. By paying for messages at least people will think twice before sending that stupid forward or that baseless rumor.

No, not “damn capitalism”. It costs money to develop these apps and keep them secure. Most encryption comes from either the military or educational institutions. Usually private sector will adopt and build off those innovations. Both are very expensive to run.
I differ to disagree. The money are there, we worked for it, so we should ask why and how those money (resources) aren't used properly for the security of the people. That's what I meant by "damn capitalism". People are watched as mere donkies to carry the heavy load and bring the resources to those in power.. how they manage the resources is what I question, including privacy, security and so on.. Even in social field, they use our private data for their own interest, not ours mainly.. do you see the point? :)

This has been simply brilliant, everyone I regularly talk to (and many I had lost contact with) have all joined Telegram this week. It has been amazing, if actually almost tiring (in a great way) chatting to everyone again.

Thank you so much Facebook, you really have brought people together. Unified in their dislike and mistrust of you.
Strange way to stay in touch with people, I mean when it comes to true relationships. That goes beyond any app:)

Use Telegram which is superior to WhatsApp. For who those who favour a non-US based company, Telegram is great.. been using it from day one. Signal, which is US-based of course, also is good.

Signal was experiencing server problems an hour ago. I imagine they might be receiving an enormous influx of users migrating from WhatsApp. Tech journals around the world are writing about Facebook practice and recommending people to migrate to Signal.

Facebook is really concerned.

Yep, Signal’s servers apparently could not handle the influx of the new users:

That would be great if technically doable without sacrificing privacy.
Definitely. I wouldn't want Apple to compromise security or privacy by releases iMessage on Android (and I'm sure they wouldn't).

Now would be a great time for Apple to release iMessage on Android. I know that there's an argument to keep everything in the Apple ecosystem but smartphones are at saturation point in most markets and people don't upgrade their phones as much as they used to. Apple knows this which is why they're growing their subscription services and why they have released music and TV+ on other platforms. I doubt there's much risk in Apple losing customers to Android as I don't think that many people stay with iOS just because of iMessage (WhatsApp is/was definitely the dominant messaging app in Europe). They could even carry adverts on the Android version of iMessage if they want to generate income to cover costs or to promote Apple services. Plus there's lots of Android users who use Macs so iMessage on both platforms would make it easier for them.

Perhaps Apple Watch will be made available for Android – it would open up a whole new market for Apple Watch, Apple Music, Fitness+, TV+ and even Apple Pay. It may even encourage people to switch to iOS. Android needs a decent smart watch!

My biggest “loss” if I left WhatsApp would be losing the ability to use two different numbers on the same phone. Right now my dual-SIM iPhone has WhatsApp (my private line) and WhatsApp Business (my work line) running. Since Signal does not have a separate business app allowing us to use two numbers, I am kind of stuck with WhatsApp business, for now. I already use quite a collection of messaging apps - iMessage, WhatsApp, Viber, FB Messenger. Now might also need to add Signal to the mix and just gather them all in one folder. 🖐
