Facebook gets a lot of hate on these boards, but we should also remember that this board is a bubble. FB alone has over 1.8 Billion daily active users, and almost 3B monthly.

You may read about Signal's boost in downloads, but what kind of dent was actually made?

FB's privacy intrusions are not new, yet they continue to grow. Most people simply don't care.
Enough to delay the rollout and have WhatsApp explain themselves to users.

I deleted it way back before even coming to this point,.. I trust no apps anymore... they're all the same, even when claiming ptp encryption or whatever.. especially when comes to Google & Facebook.. Unless you pay for it, no one is giving you top notch security these days, they suck on it anyway.. Damn capitalism.
I deleted WhatsApp as soon as I saw that announcement. The thing with these big social-networks and Google is that these people have NO RESPECT for the end user. They are giving you something free, and in return they want to do whatever they want to, and they expect the user to be grateful....

I am glad that they are doing this with WhatsApp. My parents and grand parents use the Facebook portal units and they love them. They were worried about WhatsApp.

So they’re saying that they only clarify what they’ve done for years already?

Doesn’t make it any better. It’s as if I was the guy farting on a flight, only from now on I stand up and shout ”I was the one who farted” after the landing. 💩

I’m glad I deleted my account.

People leaving WhatsApp are likely to choose Signal or Telegram which means we may need both apps if our contacts split between the two. With iMessage and possibly WhatsApp for those who stay on WhatApp, we could need four apps! Would be easier if Apple created an Android app for iMessage and then we might not need to have two or more messaging apps.

That would be great if technically doable without sacrificing privacy.

I'm sure they expected a small dip in users from this, but the fact that they have pushed the date back and went as far as front page ads in Indian newspapers - Link - probably means the dip was bigger than expected.

I'm in the UK and basically every contact I have is on WhatsApp, but for the first time in 2 years of using Signal its good to have to scroll to see all of the people with accounts 😂

Signal has no wallpaper capabilities is what I am getting when I try to convince people to use it instead of WhatsApp. Same with iMessage actually. Though I keep forcing my iPhone friends to answer me on iMessage

And everyone on MR says gimmicky features are pointless. But many non-tech people love them and don’t care about their privacy sadly 😔.

Most people not just do not care, they are happy to share everything about themselves:)

No, not “damn capitalism”. It costs money to develop these apps and keep them secure. Most encryption comes from either the military or educational institutions. Usually private sector will adopt and build off those innovations. Both are very expensive to run.

You’re not wrong, but we are we supposed to do, just roll over and let our privacy be taken away? Any increased awareness of privacy and movement of people to more private apps, like Signal, is progress and a good thing. Messaging apps also have the advantage that the more people that use it, the more it will “stick.” It’s getting people to switch to/download those apps that’s the hard part.

Also, I think people care more about privacy than even they realize. They might say, ”I have nothing to hide.” To that, I say, unlock your phone and computer and let me go through them then. If people were aware of how much truly they were tracked, I think they’d be more concerned too.

Spreading awareness, even in our bubble of a forum, is good.

This has been simply brilliant, everyone I regularly talk to (and many I had lost contact with) have all joined Telegram this week. It has been amazing, if actually almost tiring (in a great way) chatting to everyone again.

Thank you so much Facebook, you really have brought people together. Unified in their dislike and mistrust of you.

The dent is quite big as it the move has brought down Signal at the moment. My guesstimate is that at least 100mn people moved in the last week to other platforms. Don’t ask me how I came up with that number as it’s a guess. There are people in my contacts who are genuinely asking about privacy etc. I hope this movement continues.

If it's for privacy reasons, then rollback the IP collection and how you interact with and how much time. I have a feeling it won't happen. Which is why, I switched to Signal.
I wish Signal would allow for annual donating in the app so I could set it and forget it.
I also wish Apple would note IAP's of donation only versus IAP's to by additional features.

1. telegram do not start without haveng access to all your contacts which is a nogo (for all your friends and business partners)
2. telegram is a service form russia located in dubai,
