To many people, saying I don’t have WhatsApp (“but I do have Signal!”) would be just as bad as saying I only have a landline

I realized this myself too! I don't have WhatsApp and never had. I'm the weirdo without cellphone in todays world. If email, SMS or calling isn't enough, it is probably not that imporant anyways.

I have a bit of FOMO but I think this is just Facebooks bloom all over again. "You're missing best parties". I never joined FB and I'm pretty sure I didn't miss any parties :D

If I am getting "crippled" as a customer, I might think about ignoring the crippling company.
Oh, if you do not agree, you automatically become "inactive" and will be deleted after 120 days. I feel a certain pressure in this term. One might even think about another description for this.
I am not from the US, but I see freedom is dying in your country. Riles for me, not for you.. do as I do, not as you do. Praying for all of you.

"The misperception caused a backlash..."

Another amazing thing is that Whatsapp has managed to tweak the narrative as to what has happened. Although some users indeed thought that the change would be more severe than stated, many users understood exactly and still have problems with it. But now Whatsapp has made the problem solely due to "misinformation" to the point that even tech and other news outlets carry that language.

Slowly and surely, you will see as Telegram/Signal are pulled from the App and Play Stores based on “hate speech” activity. They are already closing the walls in on Telegram in regard to this.

The end goal in this situation is to ensure that everyone is headed towards Google/Facebook so that eventually there will be no alternative platforms whatsoever, which will be ripe for total censorship.

Everyone I know despite having iPhone’s uses WhatsApp and it really does bug me. Me and my partner both use iMessage but had no luck getting anyone else to switch.

This app has always been strange to me. It seems to be extremely popular, but as a 40 year old US male I have never in my life found anyone in my various circles of people that use it or any of the other messaging apps. It’s all either iMessage or just regular SMS.

Hey Tim, you should do exactly what Zuck told his employees; inflict pain on Facebook by finally releasing iMessage for Android. This way everyone wins (except Zuck of course).

FB just paid off (by buying ads) all the newspapers that wrote anything bad about them and told them not to ever say bad things about them again.

I wish Apple would release iMessage as a cross platform messaging app. I'm using four messaging apps regularly now because my contacts have split between the different apps.
For all the amount of users who switched to Signal and Telegram was substantial, if Apple released iMessage as cross platform then they would almost certainly take over the entire private messaging world outside of Eastern Asia.

I wish Apple would stop entangle SMS with their messaging service of doubtful usefulness. I want to send SMS when I need it. Not just for Android people. For anyone having a cellphone but not mobile internet at the moment.
Is it you or the receiver that doesn't have mobile internet?

If you:
  • You can switch off iMessage so Messages app just sends SMS (this would then be a standalone SMS app but you wouldn't be able to send iMessages from that device without switching it back on when you do have a connection).
  • You can select the setting that sends messages as SMS when iMessage is unavailable to you (messages sent via iMessage from others may still not get through to you though).
If the receiver:
  • They could switch off iMessage which would then force messages to be sent via SMS.

I guess Apple could add the functionality to allow specific people or messages to be sent as SMS. This could be in contacts (as a preference for individual contacts) or by holding down the send button in Messages and choosing SMS (as you do for sending animations). Might be worth suggesting to Apple.

Could be because it’s not as popular in the US amongst your social circle.

Sorry. No. Convenience is always the best excuse not to take a stand. And so many use that excuse. That is why our world is the way it is today, excuses. I haven’t used FaceBook ever. Nor whatsapp. Missed out on a lot of conversations, lot of parties on my younger years. So be it. Real friends and professional workers will know how and when to contact you to stay in touch. The rest? Not important anyways.
we give up our rights and freedoms Inch by inch. Because it would inconvenience us to change something.
<s>And are we not entitled to everything we can grab for ourselves? </s>
Our attitude make us deserve what we have coming for us because we are to lazy to sacrifice unimportant things to keep going the way we do. Which will lead us into a rather grim and oppressive future with lots of poverty and little right. Granted, Facebook is just a small pebble in this but is is a part of this larger picture where we sign our rights away to populist parties and politicians and the global corporations. For what? So that little Ed does not need to send a short message or call us from time to time?
sorry for the rant
You’re preaching to the choir. But you also know nothing of the specifics of my circumstances.

And the sky will fall right after that.

LOL There will always be an alternative platform.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Take a look at what happened to Parler. The various tech monopolies/duopolies allowed to exist against antitrust laws are definitely going to continue to edge out the competition, working hand-in-hand with the government. Does Amazon not have a virtual monopoly on web services, or something?

It’s not some ridiculous children’s book saying “the sky is falling,” it’s reality right in front of your face. Perhaps you should start paying attention, but that’s probably too much to ask, “LOL.”

People need to stop supporting this kind of behavior. Companies who rely on old models to make money start using bully tactics when the world changes around them and they can’t catch up. Just stop using anything with the FB brand, then they might pretend to care or listen.
