Done years ago. Everyone loves it! Cross platform, single account that syncs, easy file share, easy gif searching and inclusion as well as image sharing etc..

I hear that faceapp is slowly catching up, but way too late for us.
Just as long as you don't depend on security, Telegram is fine, but it s staggeringly easy for those with TelCo access to download your entire history. Apart from that, and the lack of VOIP, its great

what is WhatsApp? doesn't everyone have unlimited text messages by now?

besides the less i have to deal with FB the better. can't stand seeing crap from 3 days ago when it didn't show me then.

No, not everyone has unlimited text messaging, and SMS messages are not secure. Have you ever logged into your carrier account online? Likely, you can happily browse through the text messages you've sent. This means that they are stored as plain text on the carrier's server. Not good, but the carriers don't care. Chat app makes do, though.

I live in a strange world where everyone (no exception) in my family (parents, siblings, children, wife, wife's parents, siblings) all use iphones. In my world even 99% of my friends and colleagues use iphones and that spans several continents. I currently only have one friend in Argentina that has refused to convert. And it is for that one friend that I have whatsapp. When I convert this friend (and I am working on it), I will have zero need for this. Like I said my world is strange in that it all exists within the walled garden. But I enjoy it. :D
I'm basically in the same position, and it's very nice. For the occasional android user, I just use SMS. I'm not installing ANYTHING owned or operated by Facebook on any device I own.

I would agree, but if I want to communicate with friends in another country, which is the case here, Whatsapp is convenient since I can both text and talk just like with facetime/imessage. As I said, my goal is to bring in this last friend into the walled garden and then all is good.

I would love iMessage to go cross platform and everyone switched to that and let WhatsApp die.

You should switch to "Signal, Private Messenger" by Open Whisper Systems if you want cross platform privacy.

Avoid Facebook at all costs if privacy and security are important to you.

WhatsApp is massive here in Brazil, and by far it's the most used messages app. I don't think that announcement will change anything, unfortunately. I'm no fan of Facebook practices, but even with options, people I know will just stick to it, since almost all of them are on Facebook, except me, my wife and maybe 2 or 3 other... Let's see how that opt out thing will work..

For some reason I never installed the app, I always had a bad feeling about it. No need to even delete it, as it was never installed on any of my devices, just like Facebook. My phone contract gives me more than enough texts and minutes, and for everything else there are iMessages and FaceTime.

I'm blocking ads in FB by using Adblock Plus. I have almost the entire right column deleted except for trends. I also have the friend suggestions block gone and a few other annoyances.

I actually don't like seeing the trends. I'm trying to find a solution to block that box...

No it's not. It can handle hundreds of millions of users in a snap, lets you make calls with people thousands of miles away with better quality than regular fixed line and now has end-to-end encryption which is what made Telegram go mainstream back then. Best of all: in my contacts 350 people have Whatsapp. Less than 50 in Telegram and I am including bots. In Europe WhatsApp has really no competition.
I disagree, Telegram is a lot better than WhatsApp and has been for a while in my opinion. Yes it lacks voice calling but there are much better apps out there to do that such as Skype and Viber. WhatsApp only has the upper hand in the number of users they have and it's difficult for any other app to compete with it. Sadly, most users are just prefer to message their friends and family who are most likely already using WhatsApp rather than convincing them to switch, it's just more convenient.
