I actually don't like seeing the trends. I'm trying to find a solution to block that box...
You can delete that whole box using Adblock Plus. You click the ABP icon next to the address bar and select block element. Hover your mouse over the box till the entire box is yellow and click. In the box that pops up, click yes and that box will be gone.

Im surrounding with people that only using WhatsApp, so im forced using it over other apps. But it seems like every few years or so im shifting to another app - before WhatsApp, the main messenger app was Skype and before that it was MSN Messenger, looks like its time for another move…

I haven't even installed facebook app on my iPhone. Few years back, I installed the app and signed into facebook. They accessed my contacts list without permission. Instantly removed the app. Since then, I have never even installed facebook app on my subsequent iPhones. Facebook is one company that I distrust the most.

Same way it was with Skype , they offered me plenty of time to merge it with my hotmail.

WhatsApp is crap.

I started using Telegram in 2014, it was extremely unknown..Then there was a period when people started adopting it (I used to receive at least one notification per day, announcing that one of my contacts had joined)... And then it lost momentum and went back to being rarely used by most people... Or at least in CH.

Nonetheless, I stopped using it a few months back. The European servers were always down, and even for extended period of times... Which is extremely annoying, especially when WhatsApp (now!) works perfectly (in EU at least) and recently introduced end-to-end encryption and a web version as well (I think not encrypted though). So basically the main features of Telegram are finally available in WA, so no point in using an unreliable service anymore.

And yes FB may use these kind of info, but first of all you can opt out, second of all, who cares... As long as the don't scan through the messages I don't care... Guys we are using an extremely expensive to maintain service, and we use it for free (most of us I would say, the other pay 1 dollar per year)... They have to monetise somehow... And I definitely prefer this to ads...

You realize there is likely a lot of truth in that statement... ;)
The thought had crossed my mind. :D

Facebook is like Cancer, never stop growing.
The sad part is, the original purpose for which I signed on, namely keeping in touch with family, has been so badly obscured by all the ads and suggested topics and headlines and creepy stalkerish lists of people I might know that it's really easy to miss important news from a good friend.

And do you folks who were around in the 90's remember how there was always among your contacts at least one bored aunt or uncle or cousin or friend who spams your email inbox with forwarded jokes or chain letters? But they never bothered to actually use their email to see how you're doing or keep in touch? Well Facebook is where a lot of these people went to.

Only now it's my newsfeed that gets spammed with completely made up news stories or memes about transgender illegal immigrant terrorists who use the ladies bathroom at Target so they can steal my guns...or something...I have no idea. Or copy and paste this sob story to your timeline or people will think you hate disabled immigrant cats with psoriasis. Sorry, all of that stuff starts to run together after awhile. It drove me crazy. All I signed on for was to see pictures of my beautiful grand nieces and nephews and pictures from my friend's tour of national parks. Instead I'm bombarded with ads, GoFund Me pleas for a dog with a bad rash...that was real and I did donate and got no thanks whatsoever from the friend who hit me up on behalf of her cousin.

Shutting that stream off was great.

LMAO, that's a good analogy of what Facebook has become. Yup, I had those joker spammers in my family too.

I just didnt install whatsapp, and refused to use it. Thankfully for some reason most people I interact with own iPhones so iMessage has been fine with SMS.

Otherwise, just say "I don't have WhatsApp" just SMS me. Problem solved.

Orwell : "Targeted Ads"
Non-Orwell : Profiling and Tracking, with the added bonus of Surveillance, for the highest bidder.

Use the PGP Keyboard to encrypt your message BEFORE you send your message. Problem solved

Whatsapp just works and compression is amazing when roaming, let's not forget cross platform. I just opted out.

what is WhatsApp? doesn't everyone have unlimited text messages by now?

besides the less i have to deal with FB the better. can't stand seeing crap from 3 days ago when it didn't show me then.
Cross platform, global reach

FB buys out WhatsApp.

A new start-up comes along and releases a new msg app that does the same thing: cross-platform, cross country, roaming-friendly. And it's FB-independent.

Everyone and their dog immediately switches to the new msg app. And then Zuckerberg is left wondering "What the hell? I paid several billion to acquire an app that no one uses any more??"

Personally I find WhatsApp a very light app and very easy to use, with great features and very nice design! (iOS)

I tried telegram 2-3 times and its far behind whatsapp... and the fact that conversations are not secured by default is very annoying...

So people please stop promoting this ******** telegram app...

...better promote Signal

Around 40% of my surroundings using Android phones so cross platform messaging app is needed for daily use, for the same reason, most if not all of the ones that having iPhones dont use iMessage. Also going back to SMS is not an option, because with WhatsApp im having free calls and messaging globally, something that is very important for me.
