The thought had crossed my mind. :D

And do you folks who were around in the 90's remember how there was always among your contacts at least one bored aunt or uncle or cousin or friend who spams your email inbox with forwarded jokes or chain letters? But they never bothered to actually use their email to see how you're doing or keep in touch? Well Facebook is where a lot of these people went to.

Brings back fond memories of my late cousin Doug.
Forwarded email chains - always Jokes and Boobs.
Was the last person I knew on dial-up.
The email blast list and forward list not BCC
Resulted in a lot of junk.
I miss him.

I have an interview with LINE. I'll be sure to bring this up when they ask me why I like LINE and what I think about it versus other messaging applications.

I tried Line. I liked it's cross platform capabilities. I just could NOT get my friends/family to go to it. I really liked it. Seemed fast, sent video/text just fine, had a lot of "stickers" and stuff (that I never use). Good luck!

what is WhatsApp? doesn't everyone have unlimited text messages by now?

besides the less i have to deal with FB the better. can't stand seeing crap from 3 days ago when it didn't show me then.

I think WhatSapp is the program that causes messages to self-destruct after 30 secs like in Mission Impossible. Except they're not destroyed to law enforcement.

Apple, kill that online troll called Facebook and WhatsApp, make iMessage cross platform and ad free.

Steve Jobs said it would be cross platform and standards comliant way back in '07. Waiting about organ to happen here.

In America whatsapp isn't that popular because unlimited texting plans are quite cheap. But outside of the US they can be costly. Also you have the ability to start groups and its cross platform. If you have a lot of friends or families in another country it makes it easier to stay in contact with them.

In the US I don't use whatsapp much but because I work overseas it is my main texting application.

You can also make calls on whatsapp now.

If you want to have conversations/group chats with users on non-iOS devices, then iMessage isn't the app to use. Even if Apple opened up iMessage and made it multi-platform it's still too late. WhatsApp is the 'standard' for the majority.

You don't want to use a third party app that you depend on as that third party needs to monetize you to break even. This is why iMessages is the best as it's just an app that is provided as part of the OS experience. Facebook is like a pack of cigarettes. Bad for your health in the long run and FB themselves know they are unhealthy. That's why they buy up and possible new tech like WhatSapp as when FB dies then FB corporate needs a successor. It's like Google trying to diversify from search as they know that pie is only so large and growth requires new outlets.

"For example, you might see an ad from a company you already work with, "

Bob earns 27,000 with Company A, uses WhatsApp to talk to his boss. Bob gets a targeted ad from this company "Looking for a job where you earn at least 40,000? Contact us now!" .. rather than CompanyB .. where Bob suddenly has a bigger interest in moving to after confronting his boss on Whatsapp :)

Zucky the creepy nefarious voyuer.

His world of Facebook is a dossier on the greater majority of people in the USA, UK and beyond. Bosom buddies with various governments, it's a gold mine of massive proportions. The innocents that belong, have sealed their fate. Worst of all, they don't even realize it.

Living in denial is fashionable in their world... duped by Zuckerberg.

No he didn't. iMessage didn't come out until 2011. And you're confusing iMessage and FaceTime anyway, though FT didn't come out until 2010.

WhatsApp has updated its terms of service and privacy policy to reflect that it will begin sharing select data with Facebook, including the phone number a user verifies during the registration process and the last time a user accessed the service. Facebook, which acquired WhatsApp in 2014, will use the information to provide better friend suggestions and targeted ads and offers to users of its own service.

WhatsApp ensures that nothing users share on the service, including messages, photos, and account information, will be publicly shared onto Facebook for others to see. The updated terms and privacy policy also state that the new data sharing measures will help WhatsApp more accurately count unique users, fight spam and abuse, and improve the overall experience of its messaging service.

Existing WhatsApp users can choose not to share their account information with Facebook. On the iPhone app, before you tap "Agree" to accept the updated terms, tap on "Read," scroll to the bottom, and toggle the control. Users that agree to the updated terms also have an additional 30 days to opt out by going to Settings > Account > Share My Account Info and toggling the appropriate control in the app.

WhatsApp remains committed to providing private communications. All messages sent through the service are not stored on its servers, and end-to-end encryption has been in place since April on the latest version of the app. The updated terms and privacy policy do not affect these security measures.

In a new FAQ about its updated terms and privacy policy, WhatsApp says it will still not allow third-party banner ads on the service.

WhatsApp is free on the App Store [Direct Link] for iPhone.
