I can hear something too. Like something heavy is shifting around as I shake it

Only things I hear are my home button being a little loose, and my (I'm guessing here) other physical buttons.

    Shake to shuffle :p

Pun aside, maybe because of some apps that the OP is using. For example when you shake your iPhone during the game play of Sim City...

I suspect it's the silent switch - hold that and shake 'er again.

Have you tried holding down all the physical buttons and giving it go?

Mine does it to. Type a long sentence in notes, and hold the backspace key for 2 seconds.

I'm jailbroken on 2.2, but it happened when I wasn't jailbroken on 2.0

    I have a light rattling, but I think it's the sleep/wake button.

Think about the rocker switch that's underneath the volume...

Mine rattles too. I recognized this months ago, and never really thought anything of it.

    I deem it normal.

Well not to make you feel bad (in case it does), but I've never felt [heard] any rattling since November 12th when I got my iPhone 3G.

    Edited to satisfy nickspohn :D \/ \/ \/

Well that is good, because I think it is impossible to have "felt" anything rattle with the iPhone. ;)

Probably the sleep/wake button is just loose.

it may be the battery, i have seen a friend strip his iphone down (fool) lol, the iphone 3g's battery is just stuck the the back plastic by some sort of double sided tape its not screwed down so that maybe the little rattle.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

Interesting. Mine makes a rattle noise too. And when I hold the screen up to my ear, I hear a high pitched noise. Obviously, the latter is perfectly normal.
