from what ive read, this is the accelerometer
makes sense: its a moving part

i do know one thing: its normal
ive had 2 1st gens and 3 3Gs and they all have rattled

I noticed this a few weeks ago in my 3G. It only happened when I shook it up and down, not left to right. I took it to the Apple store and the Genius said she'd never heard it before so she gave me a replacement. That one rattled too so I'm assuming it's normal.

The accelerometer is a piece of silicon so it is not the rattling noise. Mine has the rattle and I know several people with 3G iPhones that don't so I assume it is just one of the aerials loose and flapping around. If that is the case the it is nothing to be concerned about.

However, if you feel a large object is moving around inside like the battery then I'd suggest taking it to your local Apple store before it breaks something.

Just a little update.
My rattling is not from any of the physical buttons, I held them all down and tried. It's DEFIANTLY something on the inside...

Edit: And it rattles whichever direction I shake it

The closest thing to an apple store that I have is a mac station

The rattling you hear is the vibration motor. Put your phone on silent, get a phone call, and your phone vibrates when it rings. The phone doesn't just randomly shake, it has a small motor inside that turns quickly, which holds a small but offset weight (usually a half-circle), causing a slight vibration.

Think you've misunderstood this thread.

I just got a new iPhone (mine was stolen). Nothing rattles inside it. Like I said in my previous post I got a replacement at the Apple store when I brought my rattling one in so I'd recommend everyone else do the same.

What is an aerial? I hear the word all the time.... what? It must be something people in the east don't say or something I'm just too stupid to know about.

HAHA! OF course it's the vibrating unit that causes the rattle! How could I be so stupid ><.

No, I don't believe I have.

The OP stated "just as the title reads if i shake my iphone i hear a rattling sound my iphone runs fine and as far as i can tell the accelerometer works too. but this mysterious ratlling sound exists ".

If you take an iPhone, and shake it, it will rattle. This rattle noise is the vibration motor. (which should be off unless the phone is ringing)

This motor has a small crankshaft that has a weight on the end of it, as pictured in my previous post. When powered, this offset weight spins, causing a vibration. Although when not powered, the crankshaft is not locked into place, therefore shaking the phone will produce a rattle.

Makes perfect sense to me do t know why I didnt think of
That before.

Please explain why mine doesn't rattle.

In which direction are you shaking it?

Try holding the phone so it stands upright, and then shake it side to side. (screen facing towards you) You should hear a feint sound. In my opinion, it sounds like more of a clicking noise than a rattle, but it can be described as both.

All directions. I noticed the rattle eventually in my first iPhone. However, I dropped that one a few times- once the SIM tray popped out (making me believe the possibility of misplaced SIM). I noticed it in my second iPhone (Apple store replacement- white box) immediatley. I just got a 3rd iPhone (brand new from AT&T) and nothing rattles. I'm not denying that it could be the motor, but I don't think it explains everything and that if something is rattling you can/should get a replacement.

sorry to drag up an old-ish thread, but my iphone also rattles ever so slightly at first I thought maybe the volume button after a quick investigation It ruled that out.
I've read on here it come be the accelometer, but that has been ruled out also ....(or not)!

What I think the issue could be, is movement from the sim card in the sim tray only thing that leads me to this is I only hear the sound when my phone moves vertically.

I'm still unsure as to whether to take it back to apple for an exchange and get a referb or put up with the noise!?

Anyone else getting this? My 3G did not make any sounds when I shook it but I just noticed that when I shake my 3G S up and down it makes a sound.

Actually now that I listen to it more closely it does sound like it could be that! I'm going to try popping it out and re-seating it to see if that clears it up. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ok popped out the sim card and then shook it while it was out and it still made the same noise so that wasn't the problem. Also tried shaking my old 3G again and to my surprise it makes the same noise. I wonder what it could be.

I have the same thing on my 3GS. I had it on my 3G and took it to the Genius Bar and they said it might be the Simcard moving around in the tray. Then they took it out and it still sort of made it so the girl eventually just told me that they are not manufactured perfectly and there's nothing really she can do about it (she opened it up supposedly and looked inside but said nothing was off about it).

Not sure if anyone said this already but I don't have time to read the whole thread right now..

Press your finger down on the sleep/wake button and shake the Iphone. It will mostly stop rattling. That's where the rattle comes from, things connected to the button. I don't know if it's good or bad, but that's where the rattle is. I'm guessing it's not a fatal flaw or it would have just failed outright.
